I continued my musical exploration of Mel Bonis this weekend as well.

Here's Viviane (Lady of the Lake) op. 80, played by Anna Shelest.

Delightful!

Was about to sleep but my ABRSM Grade 2 piano results came in. I passed with a merit. 9 marks away from a distinction but considering the ambient interruptions distracting my focus and my general exhaustion, I'm happy with the marks I received especially considering how brutal my Trinity G1 marks were (just a pass). Really nice feedback also. I play with sensitivity and commitment, apparently. I'll take it.

Hello Masto!

Monday was okay-ish with some really super okay bits.

The super okay bits:

(1) One article accepted subject to some revisions (phew!).
(2) !! So I shot my shot a couple of weeks back and asked a memory scholar I admire if she'd be keynote for my Memory studies seminar. She said yes this morning! This will be great not just for me but my PhD supervisees who are working on #memorystudies with me.
(3) Got my meds from the hospital (tiring long drive though) and this marks the first time I've been there since injury without using a cane. Another milestone.
(4) First class of the semester went okay, despite a couple of technical hitches. Lovely students! And I had sufficient brainspace later to do event organising for the creative writing workshop (secured a #psychogeographer as guest speaker) plus work on another article.

Guess that's it. I crash now.

Here's the thing: you can't scold students or advise them for their own good even when they are out of line. And admin staff -- you have to keep thanking them and thanking them and apologising to them. Literally every question or request or conversation of mine with either admin or academic staff is prefaced with a "I'm so sorry for disturbing or causing bother to you" and ends with several thank yous. But I still get complaints about bad communication and being "fierce". This is what I mean by being marginalised. If I bend backwards anymore I'd fall down but apparently I'm not bending enough. You bend, you genuflect, you get distracted from the real work you're supposed to be doing by all of these considerations and suddenly you're a public menace.

In the meanwhile people can scowl at you and ignore you -- that's completely okay.

Question for the #academiccommunity

Which brutal peer review has words stuck in your head for years and which you occasionally use yourself.

I'll go first:

  1. Infelicity
  2. Scuppered -- as in I scuppered theory. Thanks, I think.

Both instances, I both winced and marvelled at the usage of said word.

#3GoodThings for #Today :

  1. 2 classes down, 1 more to go and then I don't have to teach again until October. Sadly, it also means I'm going to be buried under a pile of marking.
  2. I am home, safe and sound.
  3. Star Trek Legends is really so much fun to play.

for Monday 😴

Peaches! Peach trifecta edition.

  1. Last week I discovered the local store was having a sale of peaches from Egypt so I bought a carton. When I got home I discovered to my delight they were YELLOW PEACHES. To explain, whenever there's stone fruit season, locally they tend to stock only white peaches when I really prefer the more tart and juicy kind (aka yellow peaches) which I had in abundance in Australia. So I went back the next day and bought another two cartons. 😹
  2. The local pharmacy's store brand body shower had peach scented variant which possesses all the things more upmarket brands could not give me. Also at a member's only discount of...RM8. For a TALL BOTTLE.
  3. Peach and coconut scented candle is burning right now to complete my peach fragrance bliss.

Guess how much I love peaches.

Kept meaning to do this one but keep forgetting!

Did you realise what writing was going to be like when you started?

Friends, I started writing when I was around 8 years old so definitely not. I was writing "my first novel" (more like a novelette) which was a gender-swapped Prisoner of Zenda and having a whole lot of fun with it. There was no thinking about what it was like. I was just going to write it and be fabulous, you know. Rich, famous, beauti-ful and all that. pats 8-year old Anita on the head sadly

If only you knew, child. 40 years later you'd be waiting to hit 10 sales on your first published novel like it was the best thing ever.

Not only is Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay one of my favourite books (and GGK's writings are a great influence on my own), but the cover by Mel Odom is one of my favourite works of art. I can't count how many times as an amateur artist I've tried to reproduce that cover and in fact doing so in my teens helped me rehabilitate my art and take it to a better place after I'd despaired of ever being good, although I'll never be a visual artist of any merit. One cannot be all the things, after all.

Link takes you to the wiki that has the cover.

These newer composers who straddle the boundaries between classical, experimental, indie and sometimes pop are exhilarating! And very validating/inspiring.

@bookstodon Just a note that my first newsletter that some of you have signed up for will be coming out by the second week of January. However, owing to the fact that tinyletter is going to be shutting down, I'm porting everyone over to the announcement list I've set up on my hosted account. You'll be (if you're one of the subscribers) be getting an email with a link you need to click for consent.

So, tell me what you would do in this scenario.

You gave your full manuscript to an agent a few years ago who gave some comments, asked for revision, and then ghosted you.

Flash forward a couple of years later, he's agenting a book that has eerie similarities to yours from the background, to the plot, almost beat by beat.

What do you do?

I'm not kicking a stink, because the industry is morally bankrupt and it's not the first time this has happened to me.

I'm just self-publishing mine and I've got some excellent blurbs but you know it's going to be buried by shit like this.

So, 's been great for my return to being more mobile post spinal-injury of 2022 and this long process of recovery. I love the fact that my buddy is unearthing eevee candy with every milestone imported from Apple Health. Also, because I added people from around the world (for the gift-giving quest), I felt too embarrassed to keep giving the gifts with the same postcards (from the same pokestops) so I'm exploring a bit more after work and during my commute. All things that are needed so I can add a little more mobility and adventure to my days.

The first thing I did after watching episode 11, season 3 was google "Uncle Ono" because...?????

I suppose we treat this like an anthology show and not expect temporal continuity? I mean there was an indicator from episode 1 of the season, I guess.

The other thing about Clone Wars is that it makes me SO MAD again about how they did Amidala wrong in Revenge of the Sith.

  1. Today's music (so far): Bombay Bicycle Club, and a whole lot of Father John Misty. I'm going to be listening to #debussy all night now though.
  2. I enjoyed going grocery shopping even though I was tired, because I came home to change out of work clothes, and got to wear my darling denim jacket (not always possible in this climate).
  3. I got my favourite Malay grilled squid and nasi campur for lunch. It's getting more and more pricey so I only treat myself every now and then.

More #amthinking than #amwriting right now but it's that important thinky phase of rewriting/revising a piece of writing. This one is part of my Tri-Sail suite of SF short stories and contained what was almost a courtroom drama angle. But now I'm thinking about removing that and completely changing the falling action. Because I felt I took a plot short-cut rather than seeing what could have developed from that climax. Re-organising beats in my head before I write them down. Anyone else do this?

#3GoodThings for a sleepy Saturday night

  1. Hanging out with a friend, officially my first social Saturday in years (though we've hung out on weekdays before). Trifecta of great convo with a fellow introvert, great food and bookstore met.
  2. Top-notch instant ramen and buffalo wings for dinner while watching DS9 s3, "The House of Quark" which had me laughing so loud.
  3. The fact that it's a Saturday Night and I'm about to crawl into bed with a book.
