for Monday 😴

Peaches! Peach trifecta edition.

  1. Last week I discovered the local store was having a sale of peaches from Egypt so I bought a carton. When I got home I discovered to my delight they were YELLOW PEACHES. To explain, whenever there's stone fruit season, locally they tend to stock only white peaches when I really prefer the more tart and juicy kind (aka yellow peaches) which I had in abundance in Australia. So I went back the next day and bought another two cartons. 😹
  2. The local pharmacy's store brand body shower had peach scented variant which possesses all the things more upmarket brands could not give me. Also at a member's only discount of...RM8. For a TALL BOTTLE.
  3. Peach and coconut scented candle is burning right now to complete my peach fragrance bliss.

Guess how much I love peaches.

Watermyth is on the SFWA Nebula reading list and even though I was told a couple of weeks back that it had been submitted, I still cannot get over seeing it there. Pinching myself black and blue.

mythopoetica, to fantasy

I'm thinking about the recent romantasy turn in fantasy/romance novels and how the Cantata books may have fit, say, 10 years ago. But in that time I grew old and then decided I didn't want to force spiciness onto my novels and removed most of it.

I still think one of the spiciest scenes is when they are reading books together and...not a single piece of clothing was discarded. 😉

Slow burn indeed. Mind you, I enjoy reading every now and again. I'm just not sure I'm the right person to be writing it. Spiciness is just too much work and I'd rather be focusing on other things!

There's a fair bit of romance in Cantata of the Fourfold Realms but most of it is low-key and organically building up.

How would you describe your work-in-progress's ideal reader?

I have been saying this since my teens -- "I'm writing for that lonely booknerd who discovers my book by accident in a library or bookstore and when they read it, they will feel like they are coming home."

I feel this is a rather tall order, really. But if even one lonely booknerd feels like my words are like coming home, I've fulfilled my brief.

239 -- How does your MC feel about babies, children and teenagers?

Aila's kind of ambivalent about it. The reason is because in previous versions of and , she was already a mother and grandmother but then I realized it didn't ring true for her character and the nature of her connection with [spoiler]. But definitely she's nurtured plenty of the people on the island and in things are going to get somewhat interesting where that is concerned. 🌹

What's one of the weirdest things that happens in your story?

You mean I have to pick just one?

#Rosemirror goes to some pretty strange places storywise but I don't want to spoil things for both #Rosemirror AND #Watermyth

But I can tell you this much. Tea. Lots of Tea. You think this is not weird? Well, context is everything. It's where they're having the tea 😉

  1. Kumquats and a yummy mini papaya granola bowl for breakfast.
  2. Quiet reading time on a Sunday evening. I'm still reading Jenny Colgan's Mure series.
  3. Watermelon and lemon-scented shower foam.

This is the last week re: the discount across ebook platforms for WATERMYTH (ends 29 FEBRUARY 2024), although I am participating in 's promotion period in March so you can wait till then if you were wanting to grab a copy via smashwords.

Short description: Regya has been set a task: to take the potentially deadly Mermaid Storytelling Exam. She has been placed in Yrejveree, the mythical island of exiles to which many Amors have brought their Psyches. Can a mermaid armed with the powers bestowed by her storytelling craft, her Javanese engineer housemate and her mermaid landlady defeat these beings intent on conquest?

#3GoodThings for a sleepy Saturday night

  1. Hanging out with a friend, officially my first social Saturday in years (though we've hung out on weekdays before). Trifecta of great convo with a fellow introvert, great food and bookstore met.
  2. Top-notch instant ramen and buffalo wings for dinner while watching DS9 s3, "The House of Quark" which had me laughing so loud.
  3. The fact that it's a Saturday Night and I'm about to crawl into bed with a book.

Question for the

Which brutal peer review has words stuck in your head for years and which you occasionally use yourself.

I'll go first:

  1. Infelicity
  2. Scuppered -- as in I scuppered theory. Thanks, I think.

Both instances, I both winced and marvelled at the usage of said word.

Does my writing bring me joy?

I guess we have to be a little in love with our storyworlds to sustain a life in writing, right? So yes, absolutely. Every now and then I reread something of mine and go, "Whaaat? I wrote this? Really?! Coool!"

But, there are also (like most of us on this hashtag, I suspect) moments when I am absolutely mortified by ungainly paragraphs, purple prose, awkward phrasing and typos by the million. And we all know draft zeroes are things that most of us dread to return to reading.

But, the moments of joy are what sustain me. I suspect they sustain (most of, your mileage may very) you too.

Do you like slow-burn epic fantasy mashed up with domestic fantasy? Ever read an epic fantasy that started in a kitchen and thought, "Damn, I wish there was more of that!"

Well, so did I and that is what I took into writing this series!

Think kitchens, a Kitchen Witch, lots of loving descriptions of food amidst byzantine conflict, political machinations and wars between merkingdoms. Plus, mermaids and faeries in a postcolonial portal fantasy universe. That's the Cantata of the Fourfold Realms, and Watermyth is the first novel.

In 1996, I wrote a 17-19 page* poem revisiting the myth of Cupid and Psyche from the perspective of a Psyche who never found her Cupid again. A year later, I created a hypertext project about the island upon which my Psyche found herself. In 2009, I began the project that would become the Cantata of the Fourfold Realms, around the premise of "What if instead of ONE Cupid, there was an entire civilization of them?"

Watermyth, the first book of my slow domestic fantasy takes over epic fantasy with mermaids, sirens, faeries, weremaidens and a whole lot of myth and history,

If your book was a movie, what would it be rated and why?

I'm talking about Blood Orange Orchards this month and it's a short story not a book. The first version of it back in 2014 would likely be R (unsure about newer rating systems so bear with me) because things got a little raunchy there. But the current version has no romance in it except in memories so I would say somewhere between a G and a PG (for descriptions of war and death etc).
