I am not an entomologist, but I think it is a Cylindroiulus caeruleocinctus, one of dozens and dozens of species of millipedes (diplopoda) that can be found in the Iberian Peninsula, many still undiscovered. They have an important role in soil fertilization, fragmenting leaf litter, and turning it into feces that they carry to deeper soil layers. Photo taken in my garden, Alicante province, in mid-September.

No soy entomólogo, pero creo que es un Cylindroiulus caeruleocinctus, una de los docenas y docenas de especies de milpiés (diplopoda) que se pueden encontrar en la península ibérica, muchas sin descubrir todavía. Tienen un importante papel en la fertilización del suelo, fragmentando la hojarasca, y convirtiéndola en heces que llevan a capas del suelo más profundas. Foto tomada en mi jardín, provincia de Alicante, a mediados de septiembre.

Ich bin kein Entomologe, aber ich glaube, es handelt sich um einen Cylindroiulus caeruleocinctus, eine von Dutzenden Arten von Tausendfüßern (Diplopoda), die auf der Iberischen Halbinsel vorkommen und von denen viele noch unentdeckt sind. Sie spielen eine wichtige Rolle bei der Düngung des Bodens, indem sie Blattabfälle zerkleinern und in Fäkalien verwandeln, die sie in tiefere Bodenschichten tragen. Das Foto wurde Mitte September in meinem Garten in der Provinz Alicante aufgenommen.

The light color of the membranous section makes it appear that an accident or attack has broken the elytra of this Cydnus aterrimus (burrowing bug).They usually live underground, hence the name "burrowing bugs". They feed on the roots of plants of the genus Euphorbia, although adults can feed on the surface of the same plant. I must confess that I disturbed it by touching it with a twig and it reacted by faking death (thanatosis)

El color claro de la sección membranosa hace parecer que un accidente o ataque haya roto los élitros de esta Cydnus aterrimus (Chinche negra cavadora). Suele vivir bajo el suelo, de ahí el nombre de chinches cavadoras. Se alimenta de raíces de plantas del género Euphorbia aunque los adultos pueden hacerlo en la superficie sobre la misma planta. He de confesar que la molesté tocándola con una ramita y reaccionó haciendo tanatosis, es decir, haciéndose la muerta.

Die helle Farbe des häutigen Teils lässt es so aussehen, als ob ein Unfall oder ein Angriff die Flügeldecken dieser Cydnus aterrimus (schwarze Wühlmaus) zerbrochen hätte. Sie leben normalerweise unter der Erde, daher der Name "Erdwanze" und ernähren sich von den Wurzeln von Pflanzen der Gattung Euphorbia (Wolfsmilch), obwohl die erwachsenen Tiere auch an der Oberfläche der Pflanze selbst fressen können. Ich muss gestehen, dass ich sie gestört habe, indem ich sie mit einem Zweig berührte, und sie reagierte, indem sie sich tot stellte (Schreckstarre oder Thanatose)

Ausgewachsene Anacridium aegyptum-Heuschrecken sind in der Regel grau oder braun, doch können Jungtiere auch hellgrün, gelb oder gesprenkelt sein.

Butterfly Charaxes jasius (Two-tailed Pasha butterfly). Its caterpillars feed on the strawberry tree. The adults are attracted by the fermentation of the fruit, like those of the fig tree in my garden on which it had perched when taking these photos. It can be seen in southern Europe and Africa. The photos of the unfurling tongue are actually frames taken from a short 4K/fps video. It was very windy and the branch was constantly moving.
This is the largest butterfly found in Europe. The females have a wingspan of 10cm.

Mariposa Charaxes jasius (mariposa del madroño). Sus orugas se alimentan del árbol madroño, de donde le viene el nombre común. Los adultos se sienten atraídos por la fermentación de la fruta, como los de la higuera de mi jardín sobre la que se ha había posado al hacer estas fotos. Se puede ver en el sur de Europa y Africa. Las fotos de la lengua desplegándose son en realidad fotogramas extraídos de un corto video 4K/fps. Hacía muchísimo viento y la rama se movía constantemente. Es la mariposa más grande de Europa. Las hembras pueden alcanzar 9 cm de envergadura.

Charaxes jasius Schmetterling (Erdbeerbaumfalter) seine Raupen ernähren sich vom Erdbeerbaum, von dem er seinen Namen hat. Die erwachsenen Tiere werden von der Gärung der Früchte angelockt, wie die des Feigenbaums in meinem Garten, auf dem er saß, als ich diese Fotos machte. Die Art kommt in Südeuropa und Afrika vor. Die Fotos von der sich entfaltenden Zunge sind eigentlich Frames aus einem kurzen 4K/fps-Video. Es war sehr windig und der Ast bewegte sich ständig. Er ist der größte Schmetterling in Europa. Die Weibchen können eine Flügelspannweite von 9 cm erreichen.

There is only one chance. A single night in the whole year is how long this flower of the cactus Hylocereus undatus lasts. Although it is native to Central America the photo is taken in my garden, in Spain. I have read that the flowers of this genus are the largest of all cacti (up to 30 cm).

Sólo hay una oportunidad. Una única noche en todo el año es lo que dura esta flor del cáctus Hylocereus undatus. Aunque es originario de Centroamérica la foto está hecha en mi jardín, en España. He leído que las flores de este género son las más grandes de todas las cactáceas (hasta 30 cm).

Es gibt nur eine Chance. Eine einzige Nacht im ganzen Jahr - so lange hält diese Blüte des Kaktus Hylocereus undatus. Obwohl er in Mittelamerika heimisch ist, wurde das Foto in meinem Garten in Spanien aufgenommen. Ich habe gelesen, dass die Blüten dieser Gattung die größten von allen Kakteen sind (bis zu 30 cm).

August arrives and with it the Argiope bruennichi or wasp spiders that I think are the most striking by size and color that you can find in Europe. I have photographed this female in her usual position on her web next to a pond in a park in Valencia.

Llega el mes de agosto y con éste las Argiope bruennichi o arañas tigre que creo que son las más llamativas por tamaño y colorido que puedes encontrar en Europa. He fotografiado ésta hembra en su posición habitual sobre su telaraña junto al estanque de un parque de Valencia.

Der August ist da und mit ihm kommen die Argiope bruennichi oder Wespenspinnen, die meiner Meinung nach die auffälligsten in Größe und Farbe sind, die man in Europa finden kann. Ich habe dieses Weibchen in ihrer üblichen Position auf ihrem Netz neben einem Teich in einem Park in Valencia fotografiert.

Beetle (Pimelia Punctata) investigates the inside of the shell of a myriapod to see if there is anything edible left. Although they are common in my garden (Alicante province, Spain) I have only found out that they are also distributed in Italy, France, Austria and Belgium, and that the species of the genus Pimelia are threatened mainly by habitat loss.

Escarabajo (Pimelia Punctata) investiga el interior del caparazón de un miriápodo para ver si queda algo comestible. Aunque son habituales en mi jardín (provincia de Alicante) sólo he averiguado que también se distribuye por Italia, Francia, Austria y Bélgica, y que las especies del género Pimelia se encuentran amenazadas principalmente por la pérdida de hábitat.

Käfer (Pimelia Punctata) untersucht das Innere der Schale eines Myriapoden, um zu sehen, ob noch etwas Essbares vorhanden ist. Obwohl sie in meinem Garten (Provinz Alicante, Spanien) häufig vorkommen, habe ich erst jetzt herausgefunden, dass sie auch in Italien, Frankreich, Österreich und Belgien verbreitet sind und dass die Arten der Gattung Pimelia vor allem durch den Verlust ihres Lebensraums bedroht sind.

Eurydema ornata. This bug can show different color combinations. In many cases only red and black, others, white, yellow and orange. Both adults and nymphs feed on the sap of the plants they parasitize, preferably cruciferous plants.

Esta Chinche puede mostrar diferentes combinaciónes de colores. En muchos casos sólo rojo y negro, otras, blanco, amarillo y naranja. Tanto adultos como ninfas se alimentan de la savia de las plantas a las que parasitan, preferentemente crucíferas.

Diese Wanze kann verschiedene Farbkombinationen aufweisen. In vielen Fällen nur rot und schwarz, in anderen weiß, gelb und orange. Sowohl die erwachsenen Tiere als auch die Nymphen ernähren sich vom Saft der Pflanzen, die sie parasitieren, vorzugsweise von Kreuzblütlern.

I could have photographed this Eutolmus rubibarbis from above, but it is more fun and interesting to look for different angles. It is a fly, but it is capable of capturing prey such as bees, wasps or dragonflies, even in flight using its spiny legs to hold them, and with its proboscis it injects them with neurotoxins.

Podría haber fotografiado este Eutolmus rubibarbis desde arriba, pero es más divertido e interesante buscar ángulos diferentes. Es una mosca, pero es capaz de capturar presas como abejas, avispas o libélulas, incluso en vuelo utilizando sus patas espinosas para sujetarlas, y con su probóscide les inyectan neurotóxicos.

Ich hätte diesen Eutolmus rubibarbis auch von oben fotografieren können, aber es macht mehr Spaß und ist interessanter, nach verschiedenen Blickwinkeln zu suchen.
Es ist eine Fliege, aber sie ist in der Lage, Beute wie Bienen, Wespen oder Libellen zu fangen, sogar im Flug, indem sie ihre stacheligen Beine benutzt, um sie festzuhalten, und mit ihrem Rüssel injiziert sie ihnen Neurotoxine.

Un joven y minúsculo grillo de matorral (Phaneroptera falcata) y sus larguísimas patas. Sus antenas son hasta cuatro veces mayores que el cuerpo, que en este ejemplar mide 5 mm.

Eine winzige junge Laubheuschrecke (Phaneroptera falcata) und ihre sehr langen Beine. Ihre Fühler sind bis zu viermal so groß wie der Körper, der bei diesem Exemplar 5 mm groß ist.

Hace un año no sabía que las abejas dormían y que algunas especies lo hacen en solitario, y ahora ya sé a qué hora y dónde puedo fotografiar una abeja de carda (Anthidium manicatum) preparándose para dormir agarrada a una flor de duranta al ponerse el sol.

Vor einem Jahr wusste ich noch nicht, dass Bienen schlafen und dass einige Arten dies allein tun, und jetzt weiß ich, wann und wo ich eine Wollbiene (Anthidium manicatum) fotografieren kann, die sich bei Sonnenuntergang an einer Duranta-Blüte zum Schlafen niederlässt.

We may find it amazing that a fly is a predator such as the Eutolmus rubibarbis (robber fly). They have no problem capturing large prey such as bees, wasps, butterflies, beetles, dragonflies, which they often catch on the fly. They use their powerful spiny legs to grasp the prey, and by means of their proboscis they inject a saliva containing neurotoxins.

Nos puede resultar sorprendente que una mosca sea un depredador como lo es la Eutolmus rubibarbis (mosca ladrona). No tienen problemas para capturar presas grandes como abejas, avispas, mariposas, escarabajos, libélulas, que muy a menudo atrapan al vuelo. Utilizan sus poderosas patas espinosas para agarrar a la presa, y mediante su probóscide inyectan una saliva que contiene neurotóxicos.

Es mag erstaunlich sein, dass eine Fliege ein Raubtier wie die Eutolmus rubibarbis (Raubfliege) ist. Sie haben keine Mühe, große Beute wie Bienen, Wespen, Schmetterlinge, Käfer und Libellen zu erbeuten, die sie oft im Flug fangen. Mit ihren kräftigen Stachelbeinen packen sie ihre Beute, und ihr Rüssel injiziert einen Speichel, der Nervengifte enthält. Eutolmus rufibarbis ist die einzige Art der Gattung Eutolmus in Deutschland.

Es de las pocas veces que consigo fotografiar lo que estaba buscando: una abeja de carda (Anthidium manicatum) agarrádase a una hoja (creo que de duranta erecta) para dormir al anochecer.

Dies ist eines der wenigen Male, in denen es mir gelingt, das zu fotografieren, wonach ich gesucht habe: eine Wolllbiene (Anthidium manicatum), die sich in der Dämmerung zum Schlafen an ein Blatt klammert (Duranta erecta, glaube ich).

Conseguir con mi iPhone esta foto de una abeja carpintera (xylocopa valga) en vuelo, acercándose a una flor de sauzgatillo (vitex agnus-castus) requirió casi un centenar de intentos.

Ich habe fast hundert Versuche mit meinem iPhone gebraucht, um dieses Foto einer Holz-Biene (Xylocopa valga) im Flug zu machen, die sich einer Mönchspfeffer-Blüte (Vitex agnus-castus) nähert.

The male of the nursery web spider (Pisaura mirabilis) gives insects to the female as a gift to distract her and mate. If the female rejects him and drags the gift back to her den, the male pretends to be dead (thanatosis or death feigning) and allows himself to be dragged along with the gift to revive in the den and try again to mate.

El macho de la Araña ladrona (Pisaura mirabilis) regala insectos a la hembra como regalo para distraerla y aparerarse. Si la hembra lo rechaza y arrastra el regalo a su guarida, el macho simula estar muerto (tanatosis) y se deja arrastrar junto al regalo para revivir en la guarida e intentarlo de nuevo.

Die männliche Brautgeschenkspinne (Pisaura mirabilis) schenkt dem Weibchen Insekten, um sie abzulenken und sich mit ihr zu paaren. Wenn sie es ablehnt und es sich lieber wünscht, das Geschenk mit in ihr Versteck zu nehmen, er tut so, als wäre er tot (Thanatose) und lässt sich mit dem Geschenk mitschleppen, um in der Höhle wiederzubeleben und versucht sich wieder zu paaren.
