If you're an independent author, just a pro tip: don't price your paperpack at $29.99.

I don't care how much I want to read your story, that's too pricey. I understand, you need to make money and recoup your publishing expenses, but that's too much.

masukomi,
@masukomi@dice.camp avatar

@RandomDude @thelinuxcast … $30 for a paperback novel is reasonable?!

Self publishing is NOT that expensive. If you want to just throw money at authors that’s fine. Go for it. But don’t do it in a way that normalizes prices for novels that only tech workers can afford. At that price we’ll never see them in libraries either. They’re so underfunded that they aren’t going to buy one novel from an unknown indie when they could get three from authors people are asking for for the same price

While my game’s story and setting are radically different it has a surprising amount of overlap with the archetypes of Mutant Year Zero - Genlab Alpha

So, I’m revisiting what Free League created, and… it’s just SO good. It’s zero percent about stats or fancy abilities and 100% about your character and how it relates to those around them.

Given the setting, and the violence inherent to it and the associated adventure, I just wasn’t expecting it.

masukomi,
@masukomi@dice.camp avatar

Nevermind. Won’t be reading THAT for a while :/

masukomi,
@masukomi@dice.camp avatar

I got the book back!

Interestingly while at a high level we have a lot of overlap in archetypes, the details are SO different. Like we both have a “Scavenger” but theirs is pretty stereotypical post-apocalyptic fare, mine’s all about characters who’s job it is to discover new things to help the community, but spend many of their days exploring alone.

@evilhat keeps posting about Deathmatch Island and i'm intrigued, and i absolutely want to play, but I don't have the right... mindset / background to run it so... that's not going to happen 😿

We need more GMs yo. I don't mind running cool games, but i'm tired of being the only one in our friend group who has any interest in running anything... except one person who'll run D&D & just... please no. There are so many other cool games.

masukomi,
@masukomi@dice.camp avatar

@jmstar yeah. I can't agree more. Mythic GME addresses the rest of them too.

I have to say, i'm just like 🤯 about how good of a job Shawn Tomkin did of that with Ironsworn and Starforged.

And i'm absolutely loving the increasing trend of games that support GMless play.

I've only seen examples with highly narrative game systems (PbtA, FITD, etc). Do you know of any good examples with a more trad style game?

I’m in the ambulance because we need to spend time acclimatizing the cat to it. I brought the stuff out to work on character, archetypes, but mowing took all my energy now I’m just laying here staring at the ceiling.

I fell asleep. It was very quiet and very cozy and the bed was very soft. however, there was no pillow, and now I have a kink in my neck. :/

masukomi,

I brought the cat and me back inside but that somehow made me more tired, so i laid on the couch, and the dog played “little spoon” and i think i fell asleep but my breathing was too fast and then i remembered i had no #ADHD meds because the pharmacy has none to give me, and being ducking tired on days with no drugs is normal, but it took like 15 minutes to be able to open my eyes and yes my brain is like this but finally i was able to take a picture of the adorability beside me and…

My game's pretty close to public playtestability. That means I need to put together some character Archetypes. In order to do this I've put together an internal worksheet for the creation of classes to make sure I remember to include all the critical bits for each one.

I've never heard anyone talk about using this approach but I find it invaluable. Here's a blog post with lessons learned & an analysis of mine.

https://weblog.masukomi.org/2024/05/31/ttrpg-archetype-worksheets/

If you do something like this PLEASE share.

a screenshot of my current Archetype Creation Worksheet. There's a higher resolution version of it in the linked blog post as well as an explanation of the sections on it.

side note: if you find my blog posts on gaming stuff useful please let me know.

I get a lot of folks interacting with my long threads. Even just a ⭐ on the bits you like lets me know someone finds this useful / interesting. However my blog posts feel like I'm speaking into the void.

Someone posted this on reddit, and I can't stop thinking about it.

For those who don't play Savage Worlds, it uses "exploding dice" so any hit can potentially produce an improbably large amount of damage. So, what's shown in this cartoon IS technically possible.

It seems ridiculous, but it is an absolutely wonderful feature of that game.

https://www.reddit.com/r/savageworlds/comments/1d3o4jl/how_to_tell_if_youre_playing_savage_worlds/

masukomi,
@masukomi@dice.camp avatar

Savage Worlds claims to be "Fast! Furious! Fun!" and it really leans into the "pulpy" style play with over-the-top moments. This feature though, is just "chef's kiss". Everyone who's played in a SW campaign has a story about that one time a character took out, or finished off a "Big Bad" with some ridiculously lucky hit that had NO reason to succeed as well as it did.
🧵2/4

masukomi,
@masukomi@dice.camp avatar

Those stories are always told with huge smiles. Someone responded in that Reddit thread saying "A witch's hamster familiar landed a 30-something damage killing blow on the big bad False Raven with a 1d4-1 claw attack"

And you KNOW the people at the table were absolutely loosing their minds when that happened.

masukomi,
@masukomi@dice.camp avatar

Not every game strives for dramatic moments like that, but if yours does, find a way to mechanize them. "realistic" isn't important, especially if characters are slinging magical blasts of fire, or whatever. Embrace, and enhance the natural high-points your games' stories will create. Don't worry about "realism" or "serious". Worry about FUN. Take Fun, shove it in a sports car, fill the tank with nitrous, and glue the accelerator to the floor.

decided i'm gonna get really into one of those obscure horror rpgs nobody talks about like-- [frantically has to go google whether the authors are fucking monsters and that's why nobody talks about them]

masukomi,
@masukomi@dice.camp avatar

@zozo i just discovered Eat the Reich by Grant Howitt which seems cool and I haven’t heard anything bad about him. Maybe it’s not your flavor of horror but I figured I’d mention it because he makes great games.

(I seriously hope this doesn’t result in my learning he’s terrible)

😮‍💨 this is just sad. It's like they're having to debase themselves to make enough cash to survive.

Paizo - creators of Pathfinder - have taking a pathfinder adventure path and converted it to 5e.

Also, why the eff is the pathfinder name so prominent? If that was important to me I wouldn't be buying an effing 5e version would I?!

masukomi,
@masukomi@dice.camp avatar

@zozo
a) TIL. cool. thanks.
b) Yeah, i don't begrudge them doing it. it's great that they do these & if nothing else it'll let D&D players know there's another option that's similar.

it's just sad that they need to. Like, we don't see WotC doing pathfinder conversions of their adventures.

masukomi,
@masukomi@dice.camp avatar

@zozo re savage pathfinder. I have 2 of those & my concern there was that they did a pretty straight conversion WITHOUT really thinking about modern perspectives.
I've seen this with other co's updating old modules.

I happened to catch a scene that ONLY worked with sexist & heteronormative assumptions. To their credit, they cared & I think they changed it as best they could (page layout was already locked down) BUT that 💩 should have been considered.

Cthulhu vs Roman Empire so... that's cool, if you like wargames & painting minis.

I have had Spectacular Settlements in my bookshelf for a while now, but didn’t have a great reason to use it until tonight. I generated a village, and I have to say that it worked really well.

my only real complaint is that there doesn’t seem to be any way to generate names for these places.

I really appreciate it the attention to the backstory of the village. Things like how long it had existed what hardships it had been through and how those affected it.

Best to use as prep, not mid-game.
