Just think about it!

In just 14 days, Microsoft pivoted from "do security" in an internal memo on May 5 to "let's install spyware on everyone's PC" on May 21.

That must be a world record in bad corporate management

makdaam,
@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

@campuscodi Also many people forget what Microsoft means when they say something they want to do to your PC is optional.

Logging in to a Microsoft account during Windows installation is optional. O356 self-service purchases are optional, at first you could disable them globally, now they're deprecating the API that allows that.

I suspect Recall will become "optional" in the same way.

@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

If anyone is interested, I'm giving this old #GPS receiver away for shipping costs from Germany.

It's a Garmin eTrex (the first one from 1999-2002). It has an IPX7 case, a 64 x 128 4 level grayscale LCD display with a backlight. GPS doesn't work anymore due to the GPS week rollover, other components work great.

It's a bit sad that a really well designed handheld device became useless due to outdated software.

It was also a prop "scanner" in #Stargate SG-1 if someone does cosplay.

:BoostOK:

A screenshot from the TV series Stargate SG-1 with one of the characters - Daniel Jackson - in a warehouse holding a Garmin eTrex over some artifacts.

@acejacek I couldn't get a position lock, outside with a good visibility of the sky.

It locked 2 block IIF sats, but couldn't lock to a block III sat that was at a similar angular alt. I don't know if there are any differences between those, or just bad luck. Also I don't know what the rollover does to the coordinates.

If someone wants to play with it, to check if it's still possible to get a valid lock - have fun. But I don't want to over promise on the functionality.

Quick FOSS legal literacy quiz

Imagine the following situation: your project is MIT licensed. Someone takes the whole project and white-labels it (changes the name), then sells it commercially without providing the source code or sharing any of the sales revenue with you. They include "Copyright <your name>" and a copy of the MIT license in the "about" page of the software.

Is this allowed?

makdaam,
@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

@drewdevault 100% but I had to assume you mean "allowed in the USA" since trademark law is different where I live and a name of a product/software could be infringed upon without prior registration (but the process of proving that is usually more costly than just outright registering a ™).

Gah, an account that posts photos with alt-text being just "-". 🤦‍♀️

This is why we can't have nice things.

Look, if you don't have the spoons to add alt-text, that's fine — we all run out of spoons sometimes — don't add alt-text. :blobcatcoffee:

And if you can't be arsed to add alt-text, whatever, you do you, don't add alt-text. 🙄

But adding a random character or a filename as alt-text just so that the "[ALT]" label shows up on your images is really extremely shitty. :blob0w0:

makdaam,
@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

@wiktor @rysiek You can use the #Alt4me tag that some people watch and help out if they can.

It's exactly for this kind of situations, even though I see some photographers just drop their galleries in the tag :/

I don’t understand how Teslas are still legal when people keep dying because they can’t open the doors when power is lost.

(You can open them, but it’s a non-obvious multi-step process that requires reading the manual.)

makdaam,
@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

@deirdresm @thomasfuchs Please read the Tesla manuals and let me know how to open the rear door in the newest model Y in case of a power cut off without a tool.

I'll wait.

makdaam,
@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

@deirdresm @thomasfuchs Sorry for the tone of my message.

The thing is: Tesla doesn't provide a way to open the rear door without power. Having read the manual doesn't resolve the core issue of evacuating a car in case of an emergency.

I want to try the "make 50 of something" technique again!

So this week, I'll try to find 50 things to do with a Software Defined Radio! 📻

I'll use this simple USB dongle, which you can get for around $30.

makdaam,
@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

@nblr @blinry Just to tease more people outside of the hobby: "range" is a weird thing if you have an atmosphere to deal with :) You can get troposphere ducting and receive UK broadcast radio in Poland for example. But the conditions are more probable over a body of water. See https://dxinfocentre.com/tropo_eur.html

Also if you aim your antennas right you can bounce signals off commercial airplanes*.

*) terms and conditions of physics apply.

makdaam,
@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

@blinry There's a series of amazing writeups from @windytan on FM broadcast signals https://www.windytan.com/search/label/FM%20subcarriers

I really like that in DE the TMC location codes are not "encrypted".

makdaam,
@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

@blinry Weather sats - you should be able to catch NOAA satellites with a simple dipole... not horizon to horizon but there should be something.

If your RTL-SDR has a direct mode (allows you to tune below 50MHz) you can try catching a Weather Fax... but that might be noisy if you're in a city.

Play with your 433MHz or 868MHz remote operated stuff/doorbells. Check if it's a rolling code or a static packet.

DECT?

Read your heat or water meters via wM-BUS.

makdaam,
@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

@blinry GSM can avoid sending audio when it thinks you're silent (it compresses very well). People don't notice because they're tricked by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comfort_noise

makdaam,
@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

@blinry if the channels in the 177-180MHz range are separated by about 1.75MHz - you've listened to this already. It's DAB. :)

makdaam, (edited )
@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

@blinry If you have a portable radio that can tune to the signal - go for it. :D (or use a lot of sticky tape to make a portable SDR laptop with a dipole?)

Even if other sonde hunters get to it first I'm sure they'll be happy to let you take photos of the sonde itself to promote radio.

According to https://sondehub.org/# it will fall somewhere close to Sandesneben around 14:00. But it's just a prediction.

Edit: I read the timestamp wrong, it's 14:00 not 15:00.

makdaam,
@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

@blinry Do combinations of the things you already did count? I think SSTV postcards from ISS are a thing.

There also a whole world of amateur digital radio (DMR, D-Star repeaters).

Or the amateur radio pager network https://www.hampager.de/#/ those seem legal to listen to and decode for the purposes of experimentation. But of course require judgement before posting to the public Internet.

Loads of irrelevant/spam e-mail gets sent from addresses that turn out not to exist if you send an e-mail to them.

What if delivery of mail from not-before-seen e-mail addresses was held by the mailserver until a test e-mail of some sort is successfully delivered to the sender address?

Obvious things to consider:

  • random failures
  • what should be the message to the sender?
  • sending a test e-mail confirms existence of the address it is sent from.

🤔

makdaam,
@makdaam@chaos.social avatar

@rysiek @jwildeboer There's a little known official fallback hierarchy in that case. If you get a noreply@example.com and the server responds with errors you SHOULD try to resend the reply in case of failure to legal@example.com, finance@example.com or invoices@example.com.

Personally, I don't find it funny enough to ridicule it. Even though as @parismarx notes, it really deserves to be ridiculed!
