@jolantruchng Yeah, maybe they're new to you today. Now look at alllll the major awards for this year. See how that person is on all of them? Now come back next year. Did that person have a new book/short? Are they here again? Are the slates at all the major ones the same, with the same people on them? Rinse and repeat. You'll figure it out pretty fast, my dude

lyssachiavari,
@lyssachiavari@wandering.shop avatar

@jolantruchng God, I remember the first year after I published my first book, one of them said "we would like to see more indies! If you're an indie author, please submit!" So we all forked out the cash to send out like 8 copies of our books to their readers and lo and behold, not one single indie made it. It was just the same old same old

Looking for a contemporary #CozyFantasy series full of enchanted woods, hidden secrets, and low-stakes intrigue? My Northwest Magic series (written as @elisakeyston) may fit the bill!

The first one, Alexandra's Riddle, features a mysterious old house with secret passages, mischievous fae and a very light romance (I've had readers who don't like romance love it, and readers who do like it who think it's just enough!) https://www.elisakeyston.com/northwest-magic/

Apr 29: Author's Choice

I'm nowhere near to publishing, but I'm thinking about using this as a cover. Thoughts?

lyssachiavari,
@lyssachiavari@wandering.shop avatar

@anderlandbooks Actually really like the title font and not having trouble reading it. Agree with Julie about the author/subtitle font, though—definitely a system font and you'll want to avoid those for design purposes. A simple serif might play nicely against the cursive for the title font. All caps serif is popular currently. Cardio is a nice free one.

A friend of mine is looking for a short story she and her husband remember from grade school. She says it is not Asimov. Copious Googling hasn't helped. Her description of it is: "the story is really short, and it's about the unveiling of the latest advance in robot society (the planet being wholly populated by robots now), a self-healing, organically powered robot, and as you read you realize the robots have recreated humans"

One might be forgiven for thinking I am all doom-and-gloom about the future of publishing. Yet I'm not. As I said elsewhere, I think there's hope in small and indie presses as well as self-pub--always assuming the market correction comes before both become untenable.

@lilithsaintcrow Ingram's already showing their hand in this regard, and I think it's going to get worse as other distributors like SPD close (and Ingram wound up with their books even though the pubs weren't contracted with them 🙃)

@SFRuminations TekWar is an absolute masterpiece. Easily my favorite book read for the 372 Pages We'll Never Get Back podcast, beating out even such acclaimed novels as The Forensic Certified Public Accountant and the Cremated 64-SQUARES Financial Statements.

5: How dark does your story get?

As I just finished saying how mean I was to my characters... 😅 But I don't think it's very dark! The characters go through difficult situations and there are some gut-punches, but the story's not gruesome or overly violent, the tone is optimistic, and everything does work out in the end. I don't like stuff that gets too dark. Reality is bad enough.

I was reading this Tumblr thread and then it occurred to me how Scylla is the bubbly extroverted aroace 😂

Screenshot from Tumblr: User demonicseries: I made a graph. The graph is labeled "How lgbt head canons of characters are made" and shows a scale from really mean to really nice. On the meanest end is cishet, then proceeds in order: lesbian, trans woman, bi, non-binary, ace, gay trans boy, and pan on the far end as really nice. User cdfreak: YEAH THIS IS LITERALLY IT... User hyper-nico: #shy anxious person is ace and bubbly extroverted girl is pan?? #well what if we just switch it around? how about a series with a shy pan person with a firity exotebrb aseificgi rdmsmifystdbd

Yesterday among all the snow and ice, a hummingbird came to the lights we've got along the back of the house and decided to hang out there to try to escape the cold. I turned those lights on for him (they're incandescent so hopefully gave him a little warmth) and spent the day bringing the feeder in periodically to keep it from freezing. And in between that, I went to work! 1/

I don't know if I'm the only one who feels this way, but I like the Lord of the Rings books because they're a bit gentler than the movies? Does this make sense? How do I explain this. Like, take the beginning. Bilbo doesn't just sneak off alone into the darkness, he's got dwarf friends with him and they travel together. It's just like... kind of nicer and less harsh of a world? Despite, you know, all the bad stuff going on 🤣

@1dalm THANK YOU. This is coincidentally something that's really been weighing on me. Both the cultural expectation that we're expected to revere evangelicals as the One True Kind of Christianity (and act as though It's Always Been That Way), and also that other denominations somehow have the responsibility to rein in the doctrine of evangelicals. As if we can control them, they won't listen to us anyway, that's how denominations work. Idk. It's something I've been struggling with

Hey, Masto peeps, is there a way to extract ALT text (like, copy it) from existing posts? I can see it when I hover, but that doesn't let me select.

Can be either here or Insta!

@ClH2OArs Kind of roundabout, but if you're on mobile (at least on iPhone) you can screenshot it and then copy and paste the text from the screenshot with this little guy

Right. There's been a lot of talk about and it's place here on the fediverse of late.
Whether you're blind, deaf or sighted, I'd be curious to not only have you fill out the relevant choice, but feel free to respond to this with more detail if you like.
Do you make use of, benefit from or even find alt-text useful, whether for images or audio?

lyssachiavari,
@lyssachiavari@wandering.shop avatar

@FreakyFwoof I voted the last option because I use Masto on mobile and both the browser version and the app I use won't show me alt text 😒 I think I would use it more if I could actually see it. I do include it in all my images.

Recently I listened to the We’ll Never Get Back podcast episodes from 2018 about The . For the uninitiated, EoA is a short fantasy novella in the vein of Conan the Barbarian that was published in the Ozark Science Fiction Association zine, , in 1970. The novella is hilariously bad, and thus developed cult status in the SFF community. This is all pretty well documented online. What I want to talk about is its less-documented author, 🧵 1/

I will leave you with a quote from Jim about his thoughts on OSFA, from the interview with Giuseppe Caporale: “Mostly, [members of OSFA] want to enjoy being with people of the same tastes: Science Fiction. They don’t have to convince each other they are SF fans; they belong to the club because it fills their need to belong.” I think Jim Theis really did belong. 41/

There’s more detail to the story that other people have expounded on previously, and I don’t want to retread old ground, if only because this thread is already long enough.

You can glean most of it from the pages on David Lanford’s website: https://ansible.uk/misc/eyeargon-intro.html

If you want a deep dive, you can’t go wrong with the Scholar’s Edition: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/48288

And, of course, the OSFAN archives: https://fanac.org/fanzines/OSFAn/index.html
