Feeling sad.

Last winter I was fortunate to engage with these very friendly Black-capped Chickadees. Every morning throughout the winter, unless it was really bad weather, I had my coffee outside in the yard and placed a dish of birdseed next to me on the table. Without fail, a few resident Chickadees would fly over and calmly eat breakfast with me.

At one point, one became gravely ill, possibly from avian influenza. It came over, and ate some seeds and took some water from a couple of separate jar lids, and just sat there and looked at me, finally managing to flutter off into some bushes. It repeated that a couple of times. Perhaps it died, although I like to believe it recovered.

Last fall, I put up a small nest box in the yard. A pair of Chickadees remained behind during the spring migration and occupied the box. In early May, I took a peek inside the box, and found it contained sphagnum, a favorite nesting material of Chickadees. Later, they began taking turns actively guarding and bringing food to the nest. They frequently gave their well-known "chickadee-dee-dee" call when potential predators, such as Blue Jays, approached. I didn't want to bother them, so I stayed away from their nest.

They were active around the nest box until two days ago. This morning, I approached the nest, and when I saw insects crawling on the box, I opened it. Both adults and three chicks were dead inside. I strongly suspect that the cause was intoxication.

Safe and just’ climate boundary has already been breached, says contested study

"Now, more than a decade after planetary boundaries were first proposed, the updated Earth-system boundaries framework explores how to keep the planet stable while minimising “significant harm” to humans and other species, using a “justice framework”.

The authors select five of the nine original planetary systems – climate, biosphere, water, nutrients and air pollution – and identify eight key, quantifiable indicators that can monitor these systems.

These indicators – including warming level, area of natural ecosystems and surface-water flow – were “carefully chosen” to be “implementable for stakeholders in cities, businesses, countries across the world”, Rockström told a press briefing.

For each indicator, the authors assess the conditions needed to avoid “significant harm” at both global and local scales, taking into account the following justice considerations:

  • Interspecies justice: prioritising other species and ecosystems in addition to humanity.

  • Intergenerational justice: considering how actions taken today will impact future generations.

  • Intragenerational justice: accounting for factors including race, class and gender, which “underpin inequality, vulnerability and the capacity to respond” to changes in planetary systems. [...]"

I went to Jones Beach (NY) following a tip that a good number of Red Knots -- a red shorebird that specializes in eating horseshoe crab eggs -- were present. No Knots were seen.

I guess they were all tied up for the day...

Anyway, I still had a great time with the fauna, including these tiny Piping Plovers that came remarkably close.

As for these Plovers, according to eBird they are considered endangered, "with a global breeding population of just 8,400 individuals [...] Population declines are due to direct and unintentional harassment by people, dogs, and vehicles; destruction of beach habitat for development; predation; and changes in water levels that affect availability of nesting habitat."
