I've got some light relaxing reading lined up for my Saturday :)

lispegistus,
@lispegistus@hachyderm.io avatar

Anyway, if anybody's got any links related to SECD machines, or implementing VMs in general and/or lisp implementations for them, be sure to send it my way
#lisp

lispegistus,

I'm also interested what #lisp machines were doing in hardware.

@screwtape @amszmidt We've interacted once or twice.

That's fine. I'm a total asshole in recovery myself.

lispegistus,

@amszmidt @screwtape
That would be awesome, but also are there any papers I should read?

plants are fucked up. like... as a concept

lispegistus,
@lispegistus@hachyderm.io avatar

@whitequark
And then there are carnivorous plants. Not the fly traps with the moving leafs, the other ones that are just like "yeah, I'm just gonna evolve to be a shape insects tend to drown in and then just absorb their rotting flesh and reinvent carnivorism by accident." That's fucked up.

lispegistus,
@lispegistus@hachyderm.io avatar

@whitequark
Like, imagine if the way you ate was food just randomly crawled in your mouth and died by accident and you somehow made that work.

So I watched the two first episodes of Andor (the Star Wars TV series).

Why were people raving about this? After two episodes there should be at least one likeable character, and I would have hoped at least something would have happened?

It may be because I have a general dislike for TV series which are not episodic. But, I get the feeling that this is something that was meant to be a movie, but the writer was told to stretch it out into a TV series. The stuff that happened in the first two episodes could have been 5 minutes.

lispegistus,
@lispegistus@hachyderm.io avatar

@loke This show has very little sugar and a lot of relevant, poignant and bitter political medicine, and it does take a while to get going. I'd give it a shot until the end to figure out if it's your thing or not and not judge it early. I happen to absolutely love it.

You don't learn to code in order to better participate in capitalism (although that has certainly improved my life tremendously), you learn to code because you are now the means of production... And it's fun.

Happy vday, and always remember, Russia was a nazi ally for the first two years of the war. The USSR was technically an axis power. The Wehrmacht could not do shit if it wasn't for the Soviet union pumping it up with resources. Russia shares responsibility for the Holocaust. Do not forget and remind any vatnik you may encounter and beat it into their dumb fucking skull with a brick if you have to.

Another lisp (lisps sometimes feel like weed: Leave a computing environment unpoliced for some for some time, sure as hell, a lisp has parachuted in and taken root)

What's beyond me, though, why almost everybody who makes their own (un-common, non-scheme) lisp, insists practically on their own vocabulary for defining (e.g.) functions. They avoid the time honored defun, the logical define and even the non- mutilated define-function. Instead they use defn.

This!!! Nothing wrong with being soft, but also octopi are masters of camouflage, they are venomous, predatory, have a razor sharp beak they can use to rip flesh apart if they have to and if they can't handle a situation they can spray ink to blind their enemies and run away from danger, also they are smart as shit. So, you know, if you're gonna be a shellless mollusk, that's fine, but just know you'll need to be able to handle shit if you have to https://mastodon.art/@thelatestkate/112368467606487550

America: invades the Netherlands, triggers article 5
Poland: noooo, not like that!

@zyd We can easily carve the lisp interpreter from the LISP 1.5 manual into stone for future generations to use to dig out the metaphorical statue of liberty out of the sand.(yes, this is a lisp interpreter written in lisp that fits on half a page)

"This project uses a mini CT-scanner, which is different than the full-size donut scanners used in hospitals. By creating a "fish burrito", we can scan many fish at the same time, and it will only take only a few years to scan all the fishes in the world at our current rate thanks to our novel approach to scanning." https://www.adamsummers.org/scanallfish #ScanAllFish

i think mental fatigue isn't real

now that i got that clickbait out of my system, let me clarify. as a daily experiencer of fibromyalgia, mental fatigue is a constant everyday experience for me

when i say "i think" i mean "i am testing a hypothesis", and when i say "not real" i mean "often may not correspond to a specific, reproducible physiological process"

The term itself is very vague, are we talking boredom, low mood, low blood sugar, burnout or something else? My ADHD definitely has a hard limit on how much time I can deliberately control my attention on any given day and it probably correlates with a whole host of factors.

how CISOs think of FOSS developers:

> Independent FOSS devs are part of the software supply chain in exactly the way rocks are part of the mineral supply chain, for better and worse.

(or at least this particular CISO does; https://infosec.exchange/@dymaxion/112200742199385332)

Like, how do you explain to people that we've had solid mathematical proof for 90 years now that software is literally just math, it's scientific literature. It doesn't do anything. It can't do anything other than be read, which is the main purpose of oss, it has no other purpose in and of itself. What does things is hardware when you make it read software and technically the liable person is the one who makes the hardware read the software, not the author.

ADHD brain: at the store in the morning, I crave chocolate, so I buy a bar. 6 hours and two meals later I noticed a chocolate bar on my desk. 2 meals and 2 opportunities for desert and the damn thing was in my line of sight the whole time. I didn't just forget it was there, I completely missed its existence while looking directly at it.

@whitequark My HS had an optional "sexual hygiene" class, maybe a dozen students took it up, we sat in a circle with the school councilor and mostly worked as a discussion every week. It was actually pretty good, we discussed pregnancy, consent, alcohol, feminism, abuse and of course the mechanics and safety of the act itself. I only joined because of a girl, duh, didn't work out for me, and good thing too, she was the first in our class to get the baby fever before she even got to 20 :)

What I need: tools to help me reason about code, it's history, behavior, implications and invariants.

What I get: automated copy/paste from potentially compromised corpus of random code.
