There was a Happy Days episode that both literally and figuratively jumped the shark.

@MissingThePt Yes, Happy Days is where the expression "jumping the shark" came from. It was an episode where The Fonz was water-skiing and naturally, he was so cool, he jumped a shark. It was a desperate attempt by the writers to escape the formulaic monotony of the show and come up with something new. I remember when it first aired: I was in elementary school. But the thing is, the show stayed #1 for years after that, so it didn't really mean the show was over.
