What if we invested millions in own (FLOSS / community / public) infrastructure instead of paying Zoom? https://netzpolitik.org/2021/private-infrastruktur-fuer-die-lehre-so-viel-bezahlen-hochschulen-fuer-zoom/

@becha this is what we need. I've been suggesting it here in Aotearoa NZ since before Covid... we've been offering BigBlueButton for all to use since then.

When I was involved in starting a volunteer-run community newspaper in the late 1990s we built and maintained our own website, which contained full copies of all our issues. How did the web get so mystified and inaccessible that community groups - and even businesses - now rely on FarceBook and other corporate providers to host their web presence?

@strypey I think it's learnt helplessness.

Stopping gun violence is such a complex issue that only every other advanced nation in the entire world has figured it out.

lightweight,
@lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@Jgmeadows @Sundae_Gurl bingo. As a yank watching the US deteriorating from afar, seems to me we're seeing what happens when the least principled are put in positions of power. Everyone with sound principles & sufficient wisdom (knowledge + judgement) to do the right thing is - quite rightly - too scared of mobs anti-intellectuals with guns.

What Linux/FOSS can do that MS Windows and Apple MacOS can't. This is a very good list https://tilvids.com/w/uDAf115m942nCza4TWWJHC !! Nicely done, @thelinuxEXP Thanks!

Is there an events instance (eg of @mobilizon or @gancio) we can use to keep track of #fediverse related events? Both in-person gatherings and online meetings.

I’m conscious that with the growth of interest in the fediverse, and in the number of related events being independently organised (which is great!), we’re going to need a canonical place to keep track of them. So why not dogfood the emerging federated events system!

Wow, I'm really tiring of the breathless hype about 'AI' being tacitly encouraged by our media hiring endless 'pundits' to talk about AI. So, of course, that's what they talk about, shedding little if any light. Worse, they don't push back against the misleading use of the term 'AI' to describe ChatGPT and other LLMs (Large Learning Models). The slightly informed hired, by the blind, to editorialise for the even blinder. Much noise, almost no signal. Yes, RNZ, I'm talking about you.

The killer feature of #Linux and #FOSS (in general)? I'm gonna say "permissionless experimentation & innovation".

lightweight,
@lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

These are why I'm sure that #Linux and #FOSS will eventually, inevitably win, despite having highly motivated and obscenely rich and influential denigrators.

    @topher @khm I blame the general digital illiteracy that typifies our society in this digital Dark Age: https://davelane.nz/darkage The people aren't to blame, but only through their (individual and collective) organisation & efforts can they start to resolve the issue (as our ancestors did the issue of analogue literacy).

    lightweight,
    @lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

    @topher @khm Thanks - I'm honoured you read it. For what it's worth, I work for an organisation (https://oerfoundation.org) that has what I consider a solid stance on openness: use #FOSS in any context where it's available and fit-for-purpose. For us, it turns out that's everywhere, but everyone can decide what "fit-for-purpose" means. I also like to say that "open is about intent", by which I mean this: https://davelane.nz/intent

    lightweight,
    @lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

    @topher @khm also, for what it's worth, I do think that anyone who happily uses services offered by 'big tech' corporations (and even champions and sometime adores (!?!) them) are woefully naïve. At best, they should be seen as a (hopefully brief) stepping stone to something sustainable & sovereignty/privacy-respecting. Also, people imposing those technologies on others (e.g. community or gov't decision makers) should expect to be informed of better solutions.

    lightweight,
    @lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

    @topher @khm interesting - the term "ricing" is new to me. I agree, however, with the your general inclination - reducing the slope of the learning curve is always good if it doesn't mean compromising on princple. (e.g. WSL2 is not a positive step - having Linux within Windows is the worst of both worlds in that it keeps people under MSFT's control, largely overriding any benefits of using Linux).

    lightweight,
    @lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

    @topher @arinbasu1 ah - on that topic, the real requirement is for gov'ts (as the EU is painfully slowly starting to do) to recognise that digital infrastructure is still important public infrastructure and needs taxpayer support. A tiny fraction of what the EU (or US/UK/AU/NZ) gov't spends on MSFT/GOOG/APPL/META/Amazon spent on improving a couple Linux desktops would address any/all niggles in a very short time. From that point forward all gov'ts would enjoy a massive reduction in costs.

    @strypey @aurynn @idanoo Interesting all - sounds like we each have fairly different approaches. I know that my instances (have 4 at the moment) are all smaller scale than yours. All mine are pure Docker Compose on commodity cloud VPSs (either on CatalystCloud - sponsored - or overseas as it's about 1/20th the cost).

    On the NZOSS instance, after boosting Sidekiqs in Nov to 5 x default (which sorted that issue), our biggest performance bottleneck has been backing up the PostgreSQL DB hourly & then gzipping it which slows everything down. I'm planning to set up a secondary for PostgreSQL and do backups there instead. In the meantime, I've reduced backup frequency to daily.

    Listening to RNZ now, I'm appalled by gov't's decisions to roll back climate action commitments due to natural disasters caused by climate catastrophes. Who was it who said that 'humanity is the only species that will be unable to save itself from extinction because doing so isn't cost-effective'?

    lightweight,
    @lightweight@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

    @strypey agreed, although the powers that be in the current (subsidised) fossil fuel industry want to keep fuel usage constant (or even increase!) while profiting from the switch of forms. We need to have a sinking lid/reduction policy on energy use, generally.

    Shifting to, for example, bio fuel to power all the same stuff we currently power with petrol would hasten the demise of every ecosystem and demolish our remaining biodiversity, never mind challenging our food production capabilities.
