All because of peaceful protests of students (including many Jewish students) for not bombing babies.

Photos by Infrogmation of New Orleans.

@noladon

Interior of a supermarket. Shelf with local spices and cooking supplies has large chalkboard sign. Text: "Shop ROUSES For Your CAJUN Cooking Needs". Multicolor chalk cartoon of an alligator stirring a large cooking pot. A colorful parasol is above the gator's head; the gator smiles broadly with rows of sharp teeth. Text on the cooking pot: "Laissez les Bon Temps Roulez!" (Louisiana French for "Let the Good Times Roll".)
Bayou body of water with grassy banks, houses seen in background on far shore. In center is a square metal sign, black text and artwork on bright yellow. Text: "ALLIGATORS IN THE XIUHMOPOILLI". The text surrounds round artwork, copied from the center of the famous Aztec Sun Stone, depicting a stylized human face with tongue sticking out surrounded with Aztec glyphs in the form of reptile heads and an outer circle with points sticking out, a mythological depiction of the Sun. The pole holding up the sign has been decorated with ceramic artwork, at top and bottom of pole simple round discs, between them a ceramic depiction of a small alligator.
Display in small garden space, wooden fence in background, green shrubs in soil bed. Halloween plastic skeletons lie at left, one human form the other alligator. Sign in form of fake tombstone drawings of a pair of alligators at top with a fleur-de-lis in the center. Below is text: "RIP DUMPSTER GATOR 2021". At bottom is artwork depicting the tip of the tail of an alligator sticking up from the ground. Note: Reference is to a large dead alligator seen sticking out of a dumpster in an urban section of New Orleans after Hurricane Ida in 2021, with no one seeming to know how it got there.

What a frustrating little bug! 🐞 Fine on Linux, FreeBSD and OpenBSD - failing on NetBSD only.

I was convinced it was some weird memory ordering bug or perhaps something to do with NetBSD using gcc instead of clang. After digging through the asm and finding nothing I was tearing my beard out.

The actual problem? A usleep() in a test.

On #NetBSD the argument to usleep() must be less than 1,000,000µs. It was, in fact, exactly 1,000,000 == 1sec.

Argh!

Zilog Z80, 1976 – 2024.

https://www.mouser.com/PCN/Littelfuse_PCN_Z84C00.pdf

Over its 48 year life, the Z80 found its way into inumerable devices.

It's perhaps most famous for being the CPU used in the ZX Spectrum, but could also be found as a sound co-processor in the Sega Mega Drive and SNK's Neo Geo arcade boards, among others.

I remember finding one inside my first HP inkjet printer back in the late 90's, and my parent's Sony Trinitron CRT, handling the on-screen menus (and teletext).

R.I.P. 💀

"How it all began"

I saw an ad for this CD set at a very low price in a computer magazine. I decided to give it a try, enticed by the low cost and this 'alternative solution to Windows', and in late 1996 I ordered this set.
When it arrived, I was fascinated (having never used a Unix or Unix-like system before) but a bit daunted by the lack of support for the main applications I knew. A few months later, though, I decided to give it another go and from that point, I never looked back. Whether it was Linux, one of the BSDs, or something similar (but Unix or Unix-like), I was not going back to systems like Windows.

My today is probably one of the most significant in my computing life.

This is a photo of the back cover of the "InfoMagic LINUX Developer's Resource CD-ROM" case. The cover lists the contents of the 6-CD set, including distributions like Red Hat 3.0.3 "Picasso", Slackware 3.1, Debian GNU/Linux 1.1.4, and others, with various kernel sources up to version 2.0.12+. It mentions the inclusion of a "QuickStart" installation guide and additional software like X-Free86 Version 3.1.2, with references to online resources. There's also information about the included on-line documentation like "Installation & Getting Started Guide" by Matt Welsh and "Network Administrators Guide", as well as file format details. Contact information for InfoMagic, including telephone, fax, email, and web address, is listed, along with the company's address in Flagstaff, AZ. A barcode is present on the bottom right. The text indicates the product is from 1996, providing a glimpse into the distribution of Linux software in the mid-1990s.

THEIR EXPERIENCE OF REJECTION IS THE ARTWORK

For the last 4 years, the Tasmanian Museum of Old and New Art has been running an installation called The Ladies Lounge. Only people who identify as ladies are allowed to enter. In the lounge, they can sit in luxury and look at famous artworks by Picasso etc, which are not available elsewhere in the museum. They are served champagne and pampered by male butlers. It was meant as a comment on exclusionary men's clubs (which still exist in Australia and elsewhere).

Some dude got upset about it and sued the gallery for entry at the anti-discrimination tribunal. The artist, Kirsha Kaechele, said she was "absolutely delighted" that the exhibit had been taken to court. “The men are experiencing Ladies Lounge, their experience of rejection is the artwork,” she said.

She then turned the tribunal hearing into part of the art as well, by having a group of women observing the hearing dress like her and mimic her every move. They did not disrupt the hearing, and at the end of proceedings they exited the tribunal to the song Simply Irresistible.

Kaechele argued in her defence the Ladies Lounge was a “a response to the lived experience of women forbidden from entering certain spaces throughout history” and promoted equal opportunity.

The tribunal found against the gallery and is ordering them to allow men to enter the exhibit. MONA is removing the exhibit instead.

Fucking love this artist 😂

Bogosort is a joke search algorithm; it "works" by randomly shuffling the input, checking if it's sorted, and if not shuffling it again.

Via the Sigbovik 2024 proceedings, we are introduced to "bogoceptionsort".

It randomly shufflles the text of the bogosort program and then trying to run that against the input, and if that doesn't work, shuffling that source again.

And I realized, this terrible, hilarious joke sorting algorithm is pretty much how re-orgs work.
