For a long time, I've said that the thing I love about the gothic novel, in its eighteenth-century form, is that it appealed to young women particularly because it suggests that their fears are not stupid or insignificant; there really is a conspiracy against you, and you must act, now. (The conspiracy is patriarchy! They're not wrong!)

Teaching The Turn of the Screw today, it's like the perfect meta-gothic. The real danger is how we act on our certainty of danger!

Cf. Bodies Bodies Bodies.

Re-reading Memoirs of Emma Courtney, which I hadn’t read since grad school. I had forgotten how infuriating it is.

@shandyist I am embarrassed to say I have never read it.

I am so tired of my male colleagues saying they can't do something because they're too busy ... and they expect me to do the thing. I'm just as busy, buddy.

@shandyist Blah I am sorry. That is also a complaint in my department (and generally, of course). Trying not to fall into the trap of asking women to do things just because I know they will be more reliable.

I truly believed that ASECS would be the last hurdle of this semester but my spouse and I now both have covid because one of their coworkers came to work symptomatic believing that it was just allergies 😑 I am TIRED, y’all

The past two years of in-person ASECS meetings were pretty stressful for me. Being around a lot of people, esp c18 scholars, used to be a great joy, so I was sad to feel so drained and frantic in Baltimore and St. Louis. #ASECS2024 in Toronto felt like a new kind of joyfulness and warmth, more even than before. I got to talk to several grad students and ECSs for whom it felt productive and encouraging, rather than intimidating and even vicious, which it so often used to be.

jsadow,
@jsadow@c18.masto.host avatar

@shandyist @carrideen Wait, someone refused to give a paper because the other panelists were friendly?

jsadow,
@jsadow@c18.masto.host avatar

@carrideen @shandyist That is a bizarre one even from someone who is more traditional or formal.

jsadow,
@jsadow@c18.masto.host avatar

@shandyist @carrideen I mean, not being given time to present would be a legitimate complaint but I am guessing that is not really what happened.

Too much ASECS to report on, but a highlight for me was that Jen Camden and JoEllen DeLucia snuck in an entire theory of the gothic (short version: self-conscious play, not "derivative") in their paper at my Editing Out-of-Circulation Novels roundtable.

Hi, ECF. Unfortunatedly, @ASECS is dead because chirp.social shut down (it is still "there" on our server but you won't see this post here or be able to look at old posts). I created a replacement at @asecs so that would be the one to tag (not many people are following it yet but I think that might change with the conference).

Ursula Le Guin: why are you doing this
King: no no we've really got it this time
Le Guin: that's not the point of the story
King:

Oh, before @ASECS vanishes in the next few days: If anyone cares, you can find archived posts at this archive.org link. I don't think @asecs will produce a web archive, which is kind of too bad. That is assuming there are enough ASECS people still on Mastodon for people to post about it...are there? There are 76 followers of the current ASECS group, but I don't know how many actually log in to Mastodon,

@ASECS I just received an email that chirp.social, which hosts the ASECS (American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies) group, is shutting down. I am creating a replacement group at @asecs . If you follow @asecs, it should provide the same functionality: When you tag the group, everyone in the group should see the post

So I was going through some old Usenet postings that I had saved from back in the day when I was very active in combatting Holocaust denial. I came across one exchange that looks very much as though it were written today. The year? 1999.

jsadow,
@jsadow@c18.masto.host avatar

@gorskon The difference is that that was a marginal, disavowed set of beliefs in 1999.

My least favorite kind of movie is the kind in which, instead of speaking the language the characters should be speaking, they speak English with a thick accent.

Are Mastodon users really happy with thread behavior? So, for example, this post had a lot of replies, but even if you look at it on the original instance you can't see any of them. You can see my reply to the post on my server, but it is no longer connected to the original post. So it is often impossible to read old threads (& of course even to see all replies on a current one).

jsadow, (edited )
@jsadow@c18.masto.host avatar

@_bydbach_ Really? I see no replies to that post using the standard Mastodon web client. And it is the same on my phone (using Ice Cubes). And I definitely have gone back to old posts I have made and seen the replies gone with some (but not all) visible on other servers. I think some of that has to do with individual instance privacy and deletion policies, but some of it is presumably unintended bugginess.

jsadow,
@jsadow@c18.masto.host avatar

@_bydbach_ I am also guessing it is related to this phenomenon, though why I cannot see replies I saw a month ago is still mysterious to me https://hachyderm.io/@thomasfuchs/110254516627692274
