@timbray My productivity is better, especially photo work. And my eyes are getting worse, not better. And I might be picking up more video work. OTOH I might be traveling more, and I just had a flight where I couldn't open my laptop lid. So I'm pretty torn. Without airplane seats, I'd go 16 in a heartbeat.
@stshank
I keep wondering... 14 and an iPad as external screen. Is that good enough? Does this work well enough to make up for the smaller individual screens?
Because a 16 on the plane just doesn't work, unless you are sitting in front.
@stshank
So it turned out that I was heading for a coffee shop, anyway, so I took my iPad and gave it a try.
I didn't do any photography work, I mostly worked on a few backend server maintenance tasks. Webbrowser on the iPad screen, terminal on the MacBook screen
It worked really really well. Far better than I expected. @timbray
@timbray
Unless you have an empty seat next to you.
My point was... I have the 14" which is ok on the plane, and then at the hotel, wherever, I can use the iPad as second screen. Not the same as the 16", not better than not having the second screen. @stshank
@dirkhh@timbray I'm not a huge second screen fan for my own personal workflows. For photo/video it doesn't make anything bigger (unless you're moving toolbars to second screen, which is awkward). And I find it means I get distracted from the task at hand. And yeah, not much good on a plane. Plus I want to carry less electronics around. YMMV but that's my thinking.
@stshank@dirkhh Wow, interesting. I'm totally 2nd-screen addicted. There are 3 separate places that I routinely sit to work, and each one has a 27-inch 4k screen. Fortunately those screens are way cheaper than they used to be. That's why I went 14" (but still regret it).
@timbray@dirkhh I am easily distracted and for me having multiple screens is more distracting than helpful. Also I move around a lot — in my office I switch back and forth between seated and treadmill desk, plus I work in various other rooms around the house. So it's often not super practical even with cheap 27-inch displays.
@qurlyjoe@stshank I agree, we are keeping our devices much longer than we use to these days, makes sense to max it out. I have an M1 13 inch MBP and bought it with the default 8 GBs, but its been working great. I honestly don't see myself in the market for a new Mac until 2027. Then again, I have a Windows laptop I also use, so I am thinking of swapping that out for a M5 Max base #Mac Studio in the interim.
@adacosta@qurlyjoe@stshank Good luck with your dying soldered SSD from excessive memory swapping. Have your checked your wear level? Many are failing after even one year due to constant swapping. Only Apple.
@frumble@adacosta@qurlyjoe Been using Macs for 14 years and haven't had any SSD problems aside from the price gouging during time of purchase. YMMV. I had a spate of hardware problems from those awful butterfly keyboards, now phased out, thank heavens.
@adacosta
I’ve been buying them since my first FatMac back in 85 or 86. Always bought a new one every 3-4 years. And always regretted not getting more RAM and disk space than I did. My current iMac is 3 yo. I haven’t upgraded because I hate the UX of the new OS.
