🥾Hiking at Sri Bintang 📍

A month ago when we were trying out
Bak Kut The at Sri Bintang, I got to know about the trail nearby.

Finally tasted Bak kut teh

When we got to know that we will be moving to Kuala Lumpur, I went on a spree of watching YouTube videos about places to eat and dishes to explore. That is when I first heard about Bak kut teh in Mickey Chen's video.

🥾Hiking Gunung Bunga Buah 📍

As a practice for our upcoming Mt. Rinjani hike, we did a long duration
practice hike. We started at 6.30am from KL and then started the hike
from the trail head at 7.30am.This was my first time on such

Copper Grillhouse, TTDI, Kuala Lumpur

A few weeks ago, we were invited to the inauguration of the newest restaurant in TTDI — Copper Grillhouse. It is the international avatar of the famous Copper Chimney chain of restaurants in India. They specialise in North Indian and North West Frontier cuisine.

Overall we enjoyed the 5 course meal and the celebration. Here are notes on some of the dishes we really enjoyed.

📺 Killer Soup, 2024 ★★★★

Finished this TV Series last week. We quite enjoyed the over the top acting, paired to a dark comedy and thriller setup. Every actor seems to be having a good time in their roles and it was fun to watch them all.

See the plate of offal in the background? We had already ate some of it, assuming it to be just intestines (though it tastes quite different), when my dad slyly asked us to guess what it’s made of.

So NOW I KNOW what a pig’s uterus and fallopian tube taste like…

On the bright side, my recent craving for fish head curry has finally been fulfilled.

A neighbour who makes excellent Caramel Custard, dropped by last evening to give us a large one. We were so impatient, that we realised no photos were clicked only after we had sliced it up 🙈

Everything was perfect—firm but soft to slice, not too sweet, just the right amount of bitterness. Easily the best caramel custard I’ve had.

For #MakanApaToday we were very interested in two restaurants in Taman Desa that only open after dark, so we decided to have TWO dinner sessions.

The first one was at a Japanese restaurant where the customers were mostly Japanese and the staff foreign workers (heh not sure how “authentic” that makes it):

While we we left home hoping to dine at Shin Zushi in Bukit Jalil, the line was long. That’s when I saw “Tasty Porridge” and I remembered @liztai recommending it.

We ended up having dinner there and quite enjoyed it.

#MakanApaToday congee, and my dad calls it "sick food". And indeed, most of us Chinese often take it when we are not well.
This is "chi chap chok" or "mixed pork" porridge. It contains the flesh, heart, intestines and liver of a pig in rice congee.

This month is my 5th wedding anniversary. My wife and I grew up in conservative Abrahamic faiths in Southeast Asia and, somehow when we found each other all hell did not break loose; our families accepted us, and now we are able to build a life we could have only dreamed off, far far away from home.

The Kiwis married us, and the Californians gave us a home. We are thankful. Immigrant life has been immensely difficult, but ultimately worth it.

Not exactly #MakanApaToday, but this is from our weekend trip to Kuantan.

It was a small family run place. One the tastiest Nasi we have tasted in #Malaysia. The mackerel curry was good. We took some fried chicken skin as a side.

One thing I really like about Kuala Lumpur or #Malaysia in general is the amount of public parks and botanical gardens it has.

This morning I wanted to hike at the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM), but I was told at the gate that one needs to book online in advance. So I went about exploring the Botanical Gardens at Kepong. It was a good way to start the day!
