I received another text from @POTUS Joe Biden, about new plans to relieve student debt, with a link this website:
https://studentaid.gov/debtrelief
This is a notable but unheralded use of a 20th century tech to connect Americans directly to 21st century government, from services & active citizenship. A BFD.

It’s opt-in, unlike presidential alerts on phones https://my.community.com/potus?t=Hello%20Mr.%20President%20%F0%9F%87%BA%F0%9F%87%B8

I hope Ben Labolt puts these in a public feed on whitehouse.gov/texts. cc @whitehouse

Ran out of time to build the project I planned, but this frantically hacked together thing seems to have made a lot of people happy!

20 years to prepare for the next one. Should be enough.

Meta blocked a story critical of its climate change ad policies on all of its platform. An independent journalist asked permission to repost the story verbatim on her substack. It was blocked too.

Here it is.

Remember the first time you used Google search? It was like magic. After years of progressively worsening search quality from Altavista and Yahoo, Google was literally stunning, a gateway to the very best things on the internet.

Bullying in open source software is a massive security risk, as shown by the Xz backdoor, a near-miss at F-Droid, and as repeatedly pointed out by @Mer__edith, @eighthave, and so many others over the years:

Book Question for peeps:

I want a more current book on human evolution for freshman/sophomore college students to read that has the sensibilities of Chris Stringer's Lone Survivors: How We Came to Be the Only Humans on Earth

Suggestions? Thanks!

This White House aspires to be a “global model for the safe, secure, & trustworthy use of AI,” but is publishing evidence of its actions as a screenshot of a spreadsheet, not an interactive with data posted at Data.Gov & code Code.Gov. The Office of Management still isn’t leading by example on open data, which affects government transparency and accountability & will hinder good governance & oversight as federal agencies explore using AI:

For the past ~2 years, I’ve been working on a neuroscience startup (called Matter). We have an app that—by its nature—needs to operate on private user data. Some of that data is so private that we never actually want to handle it ourselves. So we don’t.

We can’t leak data we don’t have. We can’t mishandle private info that never leaves the control of the user.

We’re taking a mostly-unique approach to user data at Matter, and I’ve finally written a little bit about it:

I don't know who needs to hear this but #TruthSocial, which is running a forked version of Mastodon, does not from the source code appear to have appropriate mitigations in place for CVE-2023-36460, which theoretically allows attackers to create and overwrite any file Mastodon has access to, allowing Denial of Service and arbitrary Remote Code Execution https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2023-36460 (probably other CVE's as well, but some rely on federation which Truth Social doesn't use?) #infosec
