I've signed up for #Beeper recently and ironically, it has more reliable notifications than some first party apps (Messenger in particular). Great stuff!

Is there something like “AI is going great” in style of @web3isgreat? Asking… for a friend.

#Barcelona, #Meta's Twitter competitor, will be ready by summer.

And lest you believe #ActivityPub integration was just some rumour, think again. In a slide, Meta confirms that Barcelona will indeed be decentralized and will be compatible with Mastodon.

Everyone who thought that AT protocol would easily win over ActivityPub, and that #Bluesky would kill Mastodon just because a few influencers joined doesn't understand the sheer marketing power and pull that Meta has at its disposal.

But believe me, I'm not exactly cheering on Meta here. Generally, where Meta goes, shenanigans happen. I simply don't think Meta is capable of releasing a product without dark patterns.

Nevertheless, I don't think the Fediverse is even close to preparing for what will happen once Barcelona starts federating.

We should all be taking Barcelona very seriously.

@mammoth +1 for (A)GPL

One of the challenges with PLs that build on top of others (Typescript to JS, Scala/Clojure to Java, C++ to C) is documentation. You often have to read two sets of docs with two distinct syntaxes.

Which languages do this best? Sometimes I wish there was a TS version of MDN.

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@wilfredh I only know of another one which did it… not well: With ReasonML I had to switch between OCaml and BuckleScript documentations as well.

Am I the only one that finds it funny that a tool that claims to "maximize your attention span" has bubbles moving on the homepage stopping me from paying attention to that text?

@stephaniewalter Maybe it's their sell? "I'm so distracted, I definitely need that!"

You have an API which lets you get details about a specific thing by its numerical ID:

/api/thing/1
/api/thing/2
...
/api/thing/789
etc

If you wanted to get details for ALL the things - which of these options would you want to see?

jnv,
@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent Some conventions-driven CRUD frameworks like Rails use plural in the resource path so you have:
/api/things/ – for index
/api/things/123 – for individual resource

If singular is already given, I'd go with /api/thing/ because of this convention.
(and – unpopular fact ahead – path names don't really matter in actual REST)

In all this talk about whether AT protocol will "beat" ActivityPub, I just remembered something...

Jack Dorsey rarely hangs out on Bluesky! He prefers Nostr!

😮

@atomicpoet Let me guess: Nostr has integrated crypto transactions.

Now I get the hype around Bluesky. It's just Twitter without Musk. No one cares about decentralization. https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/27/23701021/dril-bluesky-twitter

Can anyone recommend an alternative to #Auth0?

I want to offer social login (Twitter, Facebook, GitHub, Mastodon etc) without having to host anything complicated myself.

Sadly, Auth0 has stopped working with Twitter's new #oAuth settings - and they've stopped responding to questions in their community support forums.

Anyone using something that works well for #OpenSource projects?

jnv,

@Edent SuperTokens is quite popular, open-source, and with free hosted version for <5k users.

Nanometre scale plastic contaminants can and do end up crossing the blood brain barrier and entering the brain just 2 hours after ingestion in food. What are the implications in human health and environmental impact? I think this is a catastrophe frankly. #plastic

This is brewing inside of #Meta. And other reports claimed it would have "ActivityPub" support meaning that in some ways would be "Fediverse-compatible" - who knows?

@jnv@mastodon.social avatar

Just to get this straight. Musk:

 1. Destroyed the system of verified accounts by making the checkmark a paid perk
 2. Labeled NPR, PBS, CBC, and BBC as “government-funded media” which caused to some of them to leave Twitter
 3. After the backlash removed the labels from all media outlets including those which obviously spread government propaganda like RT and China Xinhua News.

That's pretty rapid unscheduled disassembly of any remaining trust in the platform. https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/21/23692449/elon-musk-twitter-government-funded-media-labels-removed

#TodayILearned you don't need CSS to enable dark mode support, just this tag: <meta name="color-scheme" content="dark light">

So I enabled it on my blog (https://www.bitoff.org/) and removed syntax highlighting in the process. That's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Thanks to @tdarb for tip! https://bt.ht/html-dark-mode
