Folks working in #libraries and #preservation:
I have some small books that have a musty, mold like smell. There is no visible mold.
I'd like to try and get rid of the scent, they scan and shelve them all in sealed plastic containers.

My current idea is baking soda in a sealed container, put the book(s) in for up to 7 days.

Is this viable, or is some sort of other option better? Mini ozone generator? Some other powder to remove scents? Active carbon?
Thanks!

OK
I screwed up twice this month, and it cost me 💸 💸 💸 . But working on a used UPS I got...

  • Almost electrocuted myself doing the DIY wiring (12awg with flat/curve ends appropriate)
  • The lead acid batteries are audibly sizzling when attached to the UPS and charging
  • The UPS itself is dinged up real bad, but works..

So just cut my losses and ecycle the UPS and batteries (despite the bats being NEW) because I don't think batteries are supposed to make SIZZLE AND POP noises when being charged.

In 1986, #YKK Global (famous Japanese zipper+ maker) created their own PC system: FACE16. I've been trying to find more info on this system online, but to no avail.

I've found photos from one Japanese blog, with no replies from the blog owner. I've also gotten information back from YKK Global, but it was relatively generic ("standard parts... office use")...

I appreciate any info on this, thanks!

A beige coloured, rectangular shaped computer. From Top to bottom, right to left, system port details: Slot 3, covered Slot 2, covered Slot 1, open with HARD DISK SCSI? connection port, SIO = 0, SIO = 1 Slot 0, open with S, RUN LED lights; RESET button or switch?; SIO = 0, SIO = 1 Ground pin; Color video monitor input which appears to be a 7 pin DIN?; B/W video monitor input with similar inputs; SW0 (some kind of circular dial with dates?); SW1, set of dip switches Further, a set of system identification/usage information. For brevity, skipping the Japanese text: YEU-FACE16-IPJ AC100V 50/60Hz 100W CA8911091 (Serial Number?) Finally, AC IN, with three AC OUT plugs above.
A blurry close up of the FACE 16 system setup and powered on. This photo was taken at the YKK Center Park in Toyama, Japan. The system is shown with a standard CRT style monitor, 13-14", green LED for power and two dials under the monitor. The screen shows some kind of software on display, with a blue background and text shown, and some visual imagery of the system components. Underneath the monitor is the FACE16 system itself, however it looks different than the previous images shown in this Mastodon post; This system has two 3.5" floppy disk drives, stacked on top instead of beside each other. Two LEDs, one RED, one unlit. Power button on the bottom left of the system. A keyboard is shown but details such as layout and design are not visible. It appears somewhat low profile.

jasonnab, to kbin

I'd like to run a #kbin or #lemmy instance specifically to make fediverse friendly communities based on some niche subreddits I interact with.
I would only allow posting in the communities, but no signups for the instance itself; people can simply sign up elsewhere and comment as needed through federation.

Does this sound like a good idea? Is this viable/would it work? Is there a better way? Should I make those communities on existing instances (.ml is overloaded tho)?

I wish there was a good way or place of people for me to share my love of various characters and stuffed animals with!
The Japanese characters are hard to link up with people wise because of language barriers, and on Mastodon I don't see many JP users adding hashtags
European ones are easier but #Moomin (SE+DK/FI/NO) and #Krtek (CZ) have their own language barriers

It feels a bit pointless to post without knowing if anyone sees it but I hope one day someone does!

Does anyone know if there exists a #Xenia #Linux fox plush?
I know there's a few for Tux, including this one I like:

I'm cutting this out of my diet, or have already cut it out:

  • Meat products
  • Dairy products
  • Products with oats in them
  • Un-pureed corn (corn on the cob, frozen corn, etc.), and maybe corn in general
  • Wheat based cereals
  • Fish, because vegan HOWEVER I have some thoughts I want to share about this with relation to digestion, as I effectively had to eat #pescatarian while in Japan... it was difficult.

Sure there's others but the above seem to cause me more trouble than worth; and or vegan

For anyone using a on , do you have any recommendations or otherwise? I want to test some of my website designs against screen readers, but I'm unable to get working properly on . It doesn't seem to ever read anything but what's in my bash console; I can't get it to read from my web browser or otherwise.

For any or folks, I am just wondering what these clicks from my fridge are...

Often times, the fridge will attempt to start up with these clicks in fast, successive attempts, but will not start. It will go quiet again for 30 seconds, try again with these clicks, and THEN it will start up.

I am just wondering if I should be concerned or not, if the fridge is failing or not. Fridge model in second reply.

If I were to do a 1:1 image of my #archlinux laptop setup to an SSD installed in a desktop, would I in theory run into any major issues?
Major changes:

  • Intel to AMD CPU (done that before no issues)
  • Intel iGPU to AMD dGPU (install mesa + fix VAAPI pointers?)
  • more RAM?
  • Change in audio hardware (both mobo onboard but laptop is unknown > Realtek; pipewire+PA backend)
  • ?????

Is there any tool to download public posts and retoots and reply toots of an inactive Mastodon account? I forgot to backup my posts before migrating, and I don't know a method that doesn't involve disabling inactivity on the account (and not sure what that will do).

#LineageOS

#lineageos20 is also really nice however the design is too bubbly and big for me... I guess.

OK!!
I have some OLD books, probably 1e or similar era. I really don't see using those ever, and I believe they've all been well archived or documented...

Is there some kind of reasonable group, person, means, to donate them too?
Should I try to resell them?
Is there even anyone that would want them, or use them?

I have to confirm with the original owner (family member) before closing in on giving them up, but just putting a Q out there.

#fantasiaFestival is really a place with no exception to the very common rule of not talking during film screenings!!!!! :blobfoxyeet:

Last night at The Bitter Ash (which looked incredible thanks to the CiP 4K restoration, which was only 80% complete even!), a small group of 3 or 4 behind me were chatting and making small commentary during louder music-led sections of the film (as the film was post-dubbed due to being filmed on a silent no sound-sync Bolex camera).

#MUSIC #IDENTIFICATION HELP WANTED!
I've finally got transferred an open reel I bought from a recycling shop in #Toronto , ON, many many years ago.
Unfortunately I have no idea the artist, album, or song names!
Do you recognize any of the music, vocals or instrumentation in this sample I've prepared?

  • Four tracks total
  • Written on the box: NEON Rough Mixes
  • AMPEX 456 Master Reel

Thanks!
