postgres is a great database engine :)

jason,
@jason@logoff.website avatar

@whitequark ok I get there aren’t skip indexes in mainline, but is an index-only scan not enough here?

This is a very stupid area of PostgreSQL behavior, I agree.

jason,

@whitequark ok I want a poll about how many here take care of plants ve side these opinions are wild and plants are magic.

Being close to them, you understand all these “weird” things as a totally different kind of life, and it’s neat, and good, at the risk of being earnest.

Is it weird that I find writing out this eleven lines of code substantially easier than just opening the PNG editor I have right here , filling a 4x4 image with red and then deleting the four corner pixels

@mcc yes

jason,

@mcc no prob 😉

A place that wouldn’t make women full professors in 1956 is not a place to desire. Why people still think Ivies are places of honor is beyond me. These are the halls where walk the war criminals of tomorrow. Fuck them, fuck their staff, and fuck their students.

Go to a state school, like a good citizen.

@glyph I’ve read this three times and paradoxically I find myself unsure of what much would change should I agree with it or not, but I keep coming back to one axiom I think I can’t understand: that we “have to keep trying” to muster hope.

Why?

I don’t mean this in a doomer way, but more in the way of not understanding the purpose it plays. I’m here, now. What does my opinion of the future affect?

Pondering the parallels between the Christian myth of Adam and Eve approaching a tree with a snake in it and attaining knowledge of good and evil, with the snake and the gained knowledge seen as evil; and the Buddhist myth (new to me) of Mucalinda, meaning the Buddha also sat under a tree with a snake and there also attained enlightenment but here the knowledge so gained is good and the snake is seen as a protector

Could invent some really fun heresies by developing this line of thought further

jason,
@jason@logoff.website avatar

@mcc I guess I’m mostly Zen but broadly Mahayana and I have to explain this to every new family member who asks me a question about Buddhism. Even just the three major early forms are huge and vastly different.

My analogy is it’s like just treating all Abrahamic religions like the same thing and never differentiating. Pretty flat understanding.

Reading a 2016 paper on inquiry-based learning where "cognitive load" is once again used as a reason to stop any learner from doing anything FUN and HARD and EXPLORATORY my God

Being alive increases your cognitive load. We are not in some kind of robotic fry-out state every time we have to consume novel information. Working in a repetitive assembly line is low cognitive load and also destroys people

This one little tiny concept taken out of context is used for so many bad arguments.

jason,
@jason@logoff.website avatar

@grimalkina I’d like to try a few decades with this overcorrection before we go back to the “neurotypicals just tell me to try harder” of my past, thanks

Hey. Question.

What the fuck is this?

Is my phone doing this? If so, how long has it been doing it? Also, why wasn't I informed? Also, why can't I find a setting to turn it off?

jason,

@thisismissem @mcc how does this manifest? I can't remember if I have it turned on, but maybe I've seen this alarms stuff and want to be sure

We have reached a point where more money is spent to "educate" (or "train") machines than to educate kids.

jason,
@jason@logoff.website avatar

@StompyRobot @MartinEscardo I came here to say this, glad someone else immediately saw how absurd this claim is. Not to mention all the tuition money sent to universities, above and beyond the huge loan amounts.

Clearly, not enough to avoid the OP’s innumeracy.

You know "Discourse"? The forum software? There's a thing that really bugs me about it, which is when you're signing up for a Discourse forum it requires email but says "your email will NOT be disclosed except to the admins". And then right after doing this, it by default uses Gravatar to grab your avatar.

So imagine there's some opsec reason you might not want to post under your real name on some forum. You create a pseudonym… and then there's your Gravatar, which in my case is my face.

jason,
@jason@logoff.website avatar

@mcc the Gravatar API requires the caller send a hash of an email. So they’re not technically disclosing it to Gravatar. But “technically” isn’t a great modifier in this domain.

jason,
@jason@logoff.website avatar

@mcc yeah I got stuck on the “disclosing email part” instead of “don’t identify me to others” part

It is sort of jarring when sites do this. They could just say “he we found a Gravatar for you do you want to use it?” and default to no.

In retrospect, we should have figured out that Jia Tan was a plant from the fact that they showed up to do releases. In 20+ years of contributions to FLOSS projects I haven't found anybody willing to do the same.

jason,
@jason@logoff.website avatar

@ebassi wait that was an option? I could just do releases for projects?

jason,
@jason@logoff.website avatar

@ebassi it’s definitely thankless but I’ve had so many projects where some new feature hasn’t been released and the last tag is from four years ago and there’s clearly still activity but… no release

I guess in the future I’ll just offer, because I am fine with this kind of work, whatever.

It's not that well known, but HelloFresh (the service that delivers ready to make meals to your house) actually has a Pit outside of their Headquarters and they just burn all their trash on premises. It's super harmful to the environment. I heard that BlueApron (a similar service) has actually also partnered with HelloFresh to dump all their trash into this pile and the executives all come to watch it while talking business. It's incredibly strange.
