Asked if a restaurant could serve cheese nibbled on by a rodent, the Microsoft / New York City government official AI chatbot replied:

“Yes, you can still serve the cheese to customers if it has rat bites,” before adding that it was important to assess the “the extent of the damage caused by the rat” and to “inform customers about the situation.”

AI is spewing out this sort of surreal garbage all over the world right now. AI is a monumental grift.

@gerrymcgovern How many did it get right vs how many questions did it get wrong?

And secondly can it be trained to get the questions right? If it can then it's useful

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@JetlagJen @gerrymcgovern Do they need to be trained on the underlying meaning if you simply feed them a training set that accurately supplies the rules and regulations? If they're fed 'food cannot be given to customers if it is unhealthy' then surely it will go rat bites in cheese = unhealthy = no

A spokesperson for Microsoft, said the company was working with city employees “to improve the service and ensure the outputs are accurate and grounded on the city’s official documentation.”

We've updated the rules of our flagship server mastodon.social today. Most are the same with some clarifications, but one rule is new: Content created by others must be attributed, and use of AI must be disclosed. Profiles that only post AI-generated content will not be tolerated.

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@compost @Gargron AI has no impact on the climate, the source generation of power is what impacts the climate, a server farm running on wind power and batteries has no impact

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@lucybeahere @compost @Gargron

> Except that demand for power is increasing much faster than can be accommodated, and as a result fossil fuels are being used more

Where are you seeing this?

Solar has drastically reduced the demand for power in EU/USA and most first world nations.

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@compost @lucybeahere @Gargron > by 2025, increase production by 50,000 oil-equivalent barrels per day.

If our cars run on electricity and that electricity is green then who cares, they can mine as much as they want, nobody is going to buy it and they'll stop doing it

> That creates a higher demand for fast-fashion

If I squint I can kinda see it I guess, we're already working on that problem though

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@compost @lucybeahere @Gargron I disagree, I think it's a silly rule

> Content created by others must be attributed

That is going to create a lot of mod work for something that isn't and hasn't been enforced anywhere else on the net

But I assume they've thought about that I guess

It'd be nice if there was a blog post or further explanation why this has suddenly come up and to the reasons behind why they're doing this

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@lucybeahere @compost @Gargron Interesting article, I want to see if there's any others or if this is just 1 newspaper looking for a bit of a bite

My understanding is that the IRA/inflation reduction act was massively increasing green spending to a ridiculous degree, that even Europe was getting mad about it.

It doesn't line up having electricity shortages with such massive spending on renewables

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@lucybeahere @compost @Gargron I mean it was an extrapolation based on a prediction of a trend that may not even be there...it's even in the thumbnail "(forecast)"

I want more electricity usage and renewables should be there to fill in the gap

You can see Australia's usage here: https://opennem.org.au/energy/nem/?range=all&interval=1M&view=discrete-time

It isn't set in stone, we could be reading an article in a year going "How Record Renewables Investment Keeps Americas Electricity Costs Low"

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@lucybeahere @compost @Gargron > All of those houses need power

If they have solar power they should be a net positive? Most home solar installations are outputting multiples of power required for the home

With home solar (paired) batteries on the rise and what appears to be extremely quickly heading into solar style just plain good economic sense the average home should be a net positive

Battery prices just fell off a cliff!

@lucybeahere @compost Sorry replied to the wrong person, I can see how it may be possible, but that would be an obscene amount of demand

https://about.bnef.com/blog/global-clean-energy-investment-jumps-17-hits-1-8-trillion-in-2023-according-to-bloombergnef-report/

> Investment in the US jumped 22% year-on-year, to $303 billion, as the effects of the Inflation Reduction Act started to be felt.

I'm just struggling to believe the Biden team came up with the inflation reduction act, one of the greatest policies I've ever seen and you'll still increase fossil fuel demand, that would be absurd

I hate being on call so much. If something happens that you require the aid of another team for, trying to get someone can be such a pain in the ass. I had someone tell me today it was after hours. No shit. It's also almost impossible to get a call back. From anybody. I'm super frustrated right now. It could have something to do with it being 4 in the morning and I've been trying to get help since 2. My kids will be up for school in 3 hours.

ikt,

@simon @mike we have an oncall rotation for pretty much every operations department, from software to networks to systems and every level in between

we use opsgenie so if something comes through to the NOC for our higher up teams we can move the alert over to them

scottsantens, to BasicIncome
@scottsantens@hachyderm.io avatar

The idea of #basicincome isn't to diminish the value of work, it's to recognize the value of life. We shouldn't have to prove our right to exist. Jobs are a means providing extra, but basic needs - food, shelter, clothing - need to be met first.

This isn't radical; it's humane.

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@scottsantens the question is where do you get the money, I don't want to even think how this would work in developing countries where there is no money

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@DavidM_yeg @scottsantens Certainly but the wealthiest get richer because they provide services people love, people love Amazon, they love Google, they love Microsoft, and they especially love Apple and the products they all produce, so it makes sense that the people around those companies and products get richer

how do you propose to raise their levels of wealth to distribute without taxes?

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@LLS I'm not sure the market cares about what I value billionaires at, the market is deciding, these companies are all beholden to share holders as well and CEO's can be kicked quite easily (See Steve Jobs at Apple)

If the market feels like having tech billionaires is a problem they are free to shop elsewhere, however I suspect the market aka consumers aka most people prefer the convenience of these products over the tech billionaire problem.

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@Stevenheywood @LLS You'll have to explain how much tax we are talking

A UBI would be received independently of any other income. If the level is sufficient to meet a person's basic needs (i.e., at or above the poverty line)

The taxes that would need to be raised for UBI would be absurd, in Australia $1000 a month would be unlivable so lets go with poverty level

$611 per week / $2444 per month = $31772 per year = 857 billion 844 million

Australia's federal budget is $600 billion

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@Stevenheywood @LLS I'll be honest, just thinking of the inflation from that makes my head spin

We're still recovering from the covid era stimulus and that wasn't half of 1 year of ubi and we've had to reign in spending quite a bit since then

ikt,
@ikt@fosstodon.org avatar

@LLS @Stevenheywood you tell me what the economic impact of giving billions and trillions of dollars to people would be...?

for reference we are getting stage 3 tax cuts in Australia and people are unhappy because it means if money goes to poorer people they will spend it and increase inflation again... so im seeing this part of ubi play out in real time
