Could anyone give me recommendations for a password manager? Google is basically useless now and I don't know anywhere else to ask. 😅

So far, I've never found one that I trust enough to use. I do understand the importance but I'm extremely, incredibly hesitant to hand over my passwords to a 3rd party program. I'm even more hesitant to use randomly-generated passwords that I can't memorize as a backup.

All that being said, here's what's important to me:

  • Transparency - public audits, published whitepaper, and/or open source.
  • Export to a printable format. I don't have reliable backups, so this is a must-have!
  • Works with desktop & mobile Firefox.
  • Works on Windows & Linux (I regularly use both).
  • Works on Android - not critical, but would be really helpful.
  • Can work offline (I don't trust any sync server to stay online).

For everything else, I'm more flexible. I don't mind paying a small amount for a better / more trustworthy option, either.

Any suggestions, recommendations, or just boosts are appreciated! Thanks so much in advance! 💙

Hi Fediverse admins / devs! I've got a question about instance software.

Up until now, I've been running a fork of glitch-soc that has served me well. Unfortunately, however, I'm starting to run up against some of Mastodon's limitations and the effort to maintain my own fork is just too much. (seriously, fuck Rails and especially Webpacker :blobfoxangry:) I'd like to switch instance software to something with more features out-of-the-box. I'm considering Calckey, but I don't have any experience with it or any other Misskey derivative. The feature set looks great on paper but I'd like to hear from someone who has actually run it (or at least seriously evaluated the software). I'd greatly appreciate any and all input! I'm especially curious about these questions:

  1. Can I migrate my account from a Mastodon-based instance? Yes, this is supported.
  2. How are the moderation features? I make heavy use of domain suspensions and even the occasional IP ban. Moderation features don't quite match Mastodon, but are sufficient for good moderation.
  3. Both glitch-soc and Calckey support Markdown, but different variants. How does that work in practice? Does formatting break? Markdown is generally compatible, but calckey offers additional markdown.
  4. How's the security track record for Calckey / Misskey?
  5. Has anyone contributed or forked the codebase? Is it difficult to start a local dev environment? (not planning to fork, but I like to keep my options open.) The codebase has many individual contributors and forks.
  6. The "Fediverse Software Comparison" table has a few mistakes in the Mastodon and glitch-soc columns. They're minor, but it makes me wonder if that table is really trustworthy? The table is based on personal knowledge
  7. Are there any major compatibility issues with other instances? Minor differences are fine and unavoidable, but if there's a big limitation or something then I'd like to know about it. Federation works with any software that supports secure fetch.

Any other thoughts or feedback would also be wonderful. Thanks so much!

Had a shower thought / question about . Would it be possible to develop a federated server without a media cache? I believe that it should be as long as the server is configured to proxy media requests back to the original source. This would, of course, greatly increase latency and decrease reliability (media is lost if the remote instance goes poof). But in exchange, it dramatically reduces the storage space needed to run an instance. That would reduce the cost of operating an instance on cheap VPS services. I can also think of a couple use cases around the current push to simplify instance hosting.

Anyone have thoughts on this? I'd love to hear them!

Might have just found a bug in System.Text.Json. Stepping past this line results in an immediate NullReferenceException lol

IDK if this is true, but the min() call does still exist in the kernel source as min_t(unsigned int, num_online_cpus(), 8) so it seems to be accurate 🤷‍♀️

This commit added automated scaling of scheduler settings with the number of cores in 2009. It was accidentally hardcoded to a maximum of 8 cores.

https://thehftguy.com/2023/11/14/the-linux-kernel-has-been-accidentally-hardcoded-to-a-maximum-of-8-cores-for-nearly-20-years/

Apparently there is some diminishing returns which I guess someone figured out is after 8 cores.

Is there some drama in the Rust project / community? :blobfoxlurkowonotice:

Are there any good sources that track recent breaches and compromised websites? A blog format is ideal but I'm interested in anything online. Reddit and Twitter used to be great sources but both have become pretty useless for this.

Well that's a new one. Should I be concerned? :blobfoxsweating:

Update: ok, a reboot fixed it. Thanks Linux, making me all scared for nothing.🙄

Therapist: "this 'fedi drama' you described seems very unhealthy, I'd encourage you to set up filters or take a break until it's over. I'm worried about the stress it's causing you."
Me: "ooh a whole novel-length post that revives a particularly toxic and nasty conflict" clicks

I have a theory that most corporations would actually improve their long-term profits by capping the CEO's salary at 200K USD, but offering killer benefits like full-coverage, no deductible extended family health-care. Take away all stock options as well, only cash and consumable benefits. Doing so would immediately avoid the worst "big-name" CEOs who bounce from company to company fucking shit up and collecting a paycheck, while attracting the type of down-to-earth person who still has to worry about medical bills.

Of course, they'll never ever try anything close to this so we'll never know if it actually works 🤷‍♀️

I may defederate mastodon.social, or at least set it on limit. It's the main source of spam and weird / creepy accounts, and the project is trending in a weird anti-privacy direction. Curious what others think.

Additionally, I'm a little concerned that Eugen may try to use mastodon as a weapon to more-or-less bully the rest of Fedi into following Mastodon's design (especially at the protocol level).

Out of the nearly 4000 people where I work, I'm the only one who's voiced any opposition to the introduction of AI or ML systems to our workflows. Everyone has become super caught up in the hype. We've got internal workgroups exploring tools like Copilot, ChatGPT, and a bunch of proprietary options that promise to magically solve all kinds of complex issues. Enough "AI no-code" platforms to make my head spin. There's monthly/weekly/daily "AI news" digest emails.

Management just met with a vendor that promises a tool to replace the entire role of DBA while also magically optimizing our data access to impossible speeds (sub 1ms round-trip for ALL queries, updates, and inserts on dozens of TB). Were they skeptical after such oulandish claims? No, they scheduled more demos and asked for a quote.

Some of this stuff is genuinely useful, like Copilot, but most doesn't even pass the sniff test. Legal issues? "our dataset is anonymized, so no one can prove that their content was used." Practical challenges? Who cares, "we can figure that out later". Don't even get me started on the ethical nightmare of mixing AI and PII, and all from a company that makes a big public deal about being socially conscious.

I feel like a wet blanket, constantly raining on everyone's parade with problems, risks, and ethical concerns. But if I don't, then (apparently) no one else will. Some coworkers have privately confirmed that they agree with me, but aren't willing to publicly oppose the hype. Its so tiring and frustrating and I think I might just stop, and let them ride this train until it wrecks.

Thinking about trying out RSS since a lot of my favorite blogs all publish feeds. Anyone have recommendations for an RSS reader extension / app? I'd be cool with a FireFox extension or standalone app, as long as it has windows, Linux, and ideally Android support (sideloading OK). Thank you in advance! 💙
