Here is my new GNU/Linux distribution guide about Debian KDE 12, the right GNU/Linux distribution for professional digital painting in 2024! Also about three major problems with GNU/Linux distros that will drive away all professional artists, IMO, and how I got kicked out of the Fedora KDE ecosystem with F40, which imposed Plasma6 and Wayland. I hope it helps other artists here!

@davidrevoy I really wish we could make building Krita easier... For the Qt6 port, I'm actually using only distribution packages to see how far I can get. But working with the upstread Qt project can be really hard, and we need sooooo many patches to make Qt work well on all four platforms we support!

Oh. Installing OpenSUSE on my laptop was pretty easy, pretty fast and looked pretty.

But it also didn't put Windows in the boot loader menu. And

I'm kinda too tired to actually spend time figuring out how to do that manually.

Yeah, good luck with that Adobe.

“That’s an improper use of our trademark; have you considered sounding like a massive tool instead?”

halla,
@halla@fosstodon.org avatar

@Quinnypig I hereby, as the #krita maintainer give everyone officially the right to verb "krita" and say "the image was krittered."

Or "kritaed" or whatever you may make of it: krita is a trademark, and you can play with it to your heart's content. (Except for selling counterfied spyware laden versions in app stores or on ebay.)

Okay.

The Dutch police just now jemmied my front door, walked into my bedroom, yelled at me, then left after I yelled at them. I admit I had a panic attack, they denied it was Max Hertzdahl from restaurant Jackies who called them in.

Still. Four police agents? When I was assaulted in the street for being trans, it was one agent, two weeks later, who came to take my statement.

Also, I gotta move. My front door was jemmied -- by the police.

I’m old enough to remember when people in IT wore neckties in the office. Yeah, that old. Shut up.

halla,
@halla@fosstodon.org avatar

@shoq I'm old enough to remember when his highness, prince-consort Claus took of his necktie in public and flung it into the room during a public event and thought "okay, so it's okay if I never wear a tie anymore."

And I didn't.

Though I did acquire a couple of necklaces down the road.

Okay... So someone who donated 1 (one) euro to #krita wants that refunded because someone from Russia is working on Krita -- despite this person being a refugee and victim of Putitler themselves...

I didn't know much about John Allen, the author of the classic 1978 book Anatomy of LISP. This post by a researcher who knew him well tells a bit about Allen, his work, and his passion for Lisp and computing.

Dammit, I just managed to defeat the first three imps in Baldur's Gate, after having spent two weeks trying to figure out how the controls of this game work, and now it's like painting or sketching: something fun I'm only allowed to do when everything unfun has been properly done.

Salsify is lovely, great, tasty and shiny. Re-reheated salsify is none of the above, I learned today, when re-heating the curry I made with already cooked, frozen salsify.

I love lentils, and I love chickpeas, so when today's lunch place offered lentil soup with chickpeas, I didn't hesitate.

It turned out to be a watery concoction made from stock cubes and maggi liquid, with a handfull of lentils and chickpeas added, and a dollop of over-age yoghurt.

It wasn't worth the effort of spooning it up, so no lunch for me today. It wasn't even worth complaining about, because I wouldn't have been able to say anything that wouldn't be sarcastic.

As one of Adobe's competitors, being the maintainer of #krita, I was asked to fill in a questionnaire by the @EU_Commission on the upcoming Adobe/Figma merger.

It was long, thorough and very, very clear. Good job 🙂

(Spoiler: I'd say, let's break Adobe up instead of allowing them to gobble up another competitor.)

Wait... I just realized I've been officially #krita maintainer since 2004 now. I think it was March, too, when I got the Official Baton. That's twenty years...

I deleted my Patreon account yesterday. Not because of any concerns with their policies (though I have many), but because it was just impossible to fully update my profile to my real name.

The deletion will take up to 30 days.

After that, unless Patreon messes up their policies even more, making it morally impossible, I will make a new account, and will start patronning the artists I want to support again.

I used to be, or maybe I still am, such a mean person.

In high school, my English teacher waxed eloquently about Ulysses by James Joyce, so I tried it.

I gave up around page 20, but then I was cheeky and sneaky, and read a couple of random pages past the middle, and asked my teacher what his opinion about those passages was, and could he explain, because I didn't get it.

He promised me he'd re-read the book so he could give me an answer.

(He also smoked gauloises in class.)

Candidate for Most Stupid Bug Report Of the Year for #krita, in December. Someone apparently, it's hard to figure it out with all the verbiage, complains that the unsupported, unwanted Stable Diffusion plugin is hard to use, or something.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=478288

But reports are very welcome! If they contain enough information to try to figure out what's going on. But rants are not, especially about things we don't maintain.

The moment you get kissed on the mouth by a cis (no longer sure about het...) woman who has been a friend for decades and after that, she declares "it's only between women, it doesn't count!"

Still a friend, still confused.

My wife was like, "Okay, she's got dementia, give her whatever she needs, and collect your hugs from me afterwards."

So, it's okay?

The joys of maintaining free and open source software. I found this in my mailbox today:

"Hi. Krita crashed twice in a row when I tried to set a hotkey. I would appreciate a formal apology from your foundation for wasting my time and causing me to experience emotional trauma dealing with this shit. It should be sincere and at least 500 words."

And everything is closed up.

I've been with @LWN since -- I think 2003? I think it's the best, maybe only trustworthy, archive of what is going on in the open source/free software world, one that's been going for ages. I'm paying for my subscription.

But I simply hate how much the commentariat has dwindled to a small number of extremely contentious people who don't seem to be interested in the issues at hand, but only in catching flies of each other.

I think I might have blocked every regular commenter by now.

Fun... Mollie, Krita's payment provider for donations, has disabled Apple Pay (which wasn't used by anyone, let's put that first) for the #Krita Foundation because we are a non-profit asking for donations that Apple hasn't approved of...

Of course, nobody can tell me how I can tell Apple that they should approve of us, or even why Apple should have the right of approval.
