I watched all episodes of - no spoilers, promise.
I love it. Love, love, love it. Am very satisfied and happy with the ending.

Sure, it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but Pan Yue (or rather, Liu Xueyi kahkahkah) gave me so much joy. Darling, please grace me with your abs and embroidered hanfus once again. The world needs this community service.

@liztai I love your enthusiasm for cdramas. That's why I started following you. It's great to see discussions about them. I only occasionally watch so I'm not as big of a fan but it's good to follow and see what the big favorites are! :)

I also enjoy your thoughtful blog posts, they give me a different perspective and good insights.

It's time for another vintage toy keyboard video - this time it's the Yamaha PSS-160, a keyboard from 1986 with some interesting square wave sounds. I'll take a look at the keyboard, and play two versions of the Scottish tune "Corn Rigs are Bonnie".

@thomas What a thorough presentation. Your videos are so well put together. The arrangement at the end really rocks! It makes me appreciate the versatility and fun of such a limited synth instrument.

I am trying to be more tech conscious & experimenting with a few things I may have missed in past five years of digital hibernation. One of these things is live streaming, I tried it & on Day 1 was greeted with someone who kept calling me a whore. Btw I was reading Bhagavad Gita in that stream. So I paused my reading & asked that person why would he come online to mindlessly abuse someone. He said it's because his wife cheated & divorced him. And he has a crush on me. What's wrong with men? ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

filomel,
@filomel@musician.social avatar

@altlife When moderating a stream, it is like weeding a garden. You don't engage with the weeds or give them attention, you simply pull them out. There will sadly always be weeds. The less attention you give them, the less they'll get out of it. It's a lesson to all who are watching, too. If you harass, you get nothing. You get simply and quietly weeded out.

I'd love to catch your streams!

So the 16 year old's tech teacher shadowed the 13 year old's class the other day. He told the 16 year old that the 13 year old is better at programming than them. Wrong thing to say. Now the competition is on.

filomel,
@filomel@musician.social avatar

@CindySue That is questionable pedagogy at best. I wonder how it will shape the competition and their general outcomes. Who will become a programmer when they grow up?

Twitch surprisingly runs really well in-browser on my S23. Nice that I can watch someone play in real-time without even using an app. And watching in-browser (Firefox), there are no ads.

filomel,
@filomel@musician.social avatar

@jake4480 You may have gotten lucky with ads. I had to install a script for it. I'm also on Firefox with Ublock Origin, but it wasn't enough.

https://github.com/pixeltris/TwitchAdSolutions/raw/master/vaft/vaft.user.js

Here, if you'll need it.

filomel,
@filomel@musician.social avatar

@jake4480 That is weird, who knows. For a while I didn't have ads because twitch didn't really have them for my country. Then it was one-two same ads all the damn time.

As long as you don't have any on firefox that's great. But if you start getting them, you can always nudge me for the solution.

I detest the ad industry and even though I'm a streamer, I never want to earn money through ads. So I'll always advocate ways to get rid of them.

We saw the great Shabaka Hutchings last night at the lovely Newmark Theater in downtown . As expected, the focus of the performance was his exploration of the flute, or I should say flutes, as he played a very wide variety of instruments, including several we didn't recognize. The band was excellent and did include Esperanza Spalding as hoped.

He is, of course, a genius. For my taste he's the most interesting voice in modern jazz by a wide margin. The performance was fascinating

Hey fediverse, do you have any fun weekend traditions? One of my favorite things to do is blast 80's music as soon as I'm done with work on Friday, usually 80's RnB after work on Friday and yacht rock on Saturday mornings. Yes, I know, that's awfully specific lol.

filomel,
@filomel@musician.social avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi I had no idea yacht rock existed and now I love it.

Since I've talked a lot about change today, I'll ask a question about it:

If you've changed something in your life or about yourself, how did you do it, and why?

filomel,
@filomel@musician.social avatar

@RickiTarr Some of it required being brave, like starting to do music and doing live gigs.

Other things come more as a slowly grinding water. A gradual insistence on building habits until they are normal behavior. That way I progress in my endeavors and keep growing.

One such thing was insisting on cultivating a positive, supportive and inspiring bubble around me.

All these things and more have helped me overcome depression, trauma and severe burnout. Still a work in progress.

Some more music for you - I was one of about 100 ukulele players on James Hill's #UkeHeads. The album comes out Friday, and there's a single out today with a video premiering in about ten minutes here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eLr2uEE2JY

filomel,

@thomas It's already a big deal to perform music in public. I know the fears, I hope you overcome and can have fun with it.

filomel,
@filomel@musician.social avatar

@thomas It is really scary. I've been streaming live for years now, and yet uploading to youtube frightens me and feels like such a huge deal. And I really need to start doing that!

We need to surround ourselves with nice, encouraging people. :)

filomel,
@filomel@musician.social avatar

@thomas I feel like I should be more scared of streaming! It's risky when everything goes live. Once it's done, it's done! No fixing in post. :D

I'm trying to overcome the perfectionist block. It's wild, cause I got great gear and sound quality now. Yet it's harder to do than in 2007 when I recorded my first youtube videos with a webcam and a 2โ‚ฌ mic. Everyone seems to be so perfect on youtube.

As for bad comments, block and ignore. Like weeding a garden, remove the unwanted plant and move on.

filomel,
@filomel@musician.social avatar

@thomas True enough. :) That's encouraging, thank you. And thank you for a nice conversation.

filomel,
@filomel@musician.social avatar

@thomas Aw, that's awesome of you. I am terrible about starting times, but I usually post on mastodon when I start. Sometime in the evening from 8 to 9pm, hopefully not too late. Next ones are Thursday and Friday.

i seriously love how much craftsmanship went into Maxis games. in addition to its 200 page tome of a manual, SimLife came with a laboratory notebook to encourage you to do experiments and document them.

you can totally tell this was made so an enterprising science teacher would xerox 30 of these and hand them out to students for lab assignments ๐Ÿ˜‚

The cover of the SimLife Lab Book. It looks like a Mead or Hilroy notebook where you can enter your name and grade.

Last year was a time of ploughing and sowing new seeds. For a long time I'd been talking about making more out of my own creativity but I guess felt safer in editing video for others.

Around August I began building my own portfolio. It took me months to find what I feel is my voice. This is so far from done, but I'm starting to take photography clients and getting art ready to sell. I'd be honored if you wanted to have a look.
