Anyone know how Varoufakis’s “Technofeudalism” compares to “Adults In the Room”?

In re copyright & AI, I've been thinking about authors. This essay says "'author' in its modern sense is a relative recent invention." A lovely quote on the book: "It does not contain thoughts; these must arise in the mind of the comprehending reader." 1/

    faberfedor,

    > until the [authors] were seen as the creative originator,

Why would that have any bearing on who owns copyright. Why is it the employers who come out on top??

“The surprising connection between after-hours work and decreased productivity | Slack”

Surprising? This is literally literally what almost every post-WW2 productivity study has told us and has been the consensus in work and organisational psychology since the seventies https://slack.com/intl/en-gb/blog/news/the-surprising-connection-between-after-hours-work-and-decreased-productivity

    faberfedor,

@baldur The same can be said of most people I've met over the years.

How many working programmers have read Knuth or SICP?

How many PMs have read Brooks or Fowler?

Instead of management Goop picked up at airport kiosks, these tech ppl get their info from the slashdot's, Stack Overflows, and Hackers Newses on the Web.

I daresay this applies to any human activity.

If you are worried about Trump's plan to politicize the executive branch, here is a specific thing you can do: write a public comment supporting a proposed rule that would block Schedule F, Trump's executive order to turn career staff into at-will appointees. Deadline Nov 17
    https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/09/18/2023-19806/upholding-civil-service-protections-and-merit-system-principles

    faberfedor,

@donmoyn Is there a reason you waited until the evening of the 15th to tell us about a deadline on the 17th? And tell us how to use the public comment process? I'm not going to be able to do it in time.

I don't know who wants to hear, but please test your backup. Restore files. How much time did it take? Did you succeed in getting back your data? You are welcome 🤗

    faberfedor,

@nixCraft As I tell all my clients "You don't need a backup system. You need a RESTORE system."

(Yes, I know it's grammatically incorrect. My Poetic License is up-to-date so it's fine.)

I think I want to listen to a lot less Spotify and a lot more internet radio stations. What software (for macOS) will make this delightful?

It's important to me that I see the artist and song name.

    faberfedor,

@rjbs VLC doesn’t do it for you? Granted I haven’t streamed anything on there in, like, forever since I never found a radio station I liked save for SOMA-FM. (I’m open to suggestion, tho’).

I use it for all my non-DRMed stuff.

    faberfedor,

@mjgardner @rjbs @videolan Good point. I spent quite a bit of time this weekend cussing out the Android version while listening to a DRM-free audiobook.

Jeezus. Maybe the "struggle" is because of coverage like this from The New York Times. Appalling.

@jeffjarvis This is your bailiwick. What needs to happen? How does it happen? We, the unwashed masses, can't do shit.

These robot cars are starting to kill people.

SFGate: Injured person reportedly dies after Cruise cars block first responders >>> https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/cruise-cars-reportedly-block-first-responders-18343475.php

"Two autonomous Cruise vehicles and an empty San Francisco police vehicle were blocking the only exits from the scene... forcing the ambulance to wait while first responders attempted to manually move the Cruise vehicles..."

"The pedestrian later died of their injuries... linked to the delay in getting them to the hospital."

    faberfedor,

@mastodonmigration Was the "empty [SF] police vehicle" also autonomous? Why is it not implicated in the pedestrian's death? Does it have a lighter paint job than the Cruise vehicles? Or is it because it is under the colour of law?
