I don’t know what these are, but each plant is no bigger than a thumb, with little fruiting stalks, growing in a layer of lichen.

The better new cameras get, the more I love the imperfections of old analog tech. This was shot on film with a camera more than half a century old.

Sometimes there's a whole armada, marching across the horizon. This day, just a single explorer, becalmed.

The Thanksgiving and Easter Cactus is right on schedule. Was mislabeled at the store as a Christmas Cactus, but that’s clearly wrong.

Not asking for a refund. 😎

Did you know you could fill a macOS volume so full, files can’t be deleted? And, due to Sonoma and Time Machine nonsense, a full restore didn’t work (though I didn’t try everything).

I told my tale of woe with a too-full drive on my 16 y.o.’s MacBook Pro over at @sixcolors. Read free at the member-supported Six Colors site! https://sixcolors.com/post/2024/03/a-disk-so-full-it-couldnt-be-restored/

@glennf @sixcolors This is the main reason I hate, hate, hate that with Apple Silicon you lose the ability to boot from an external drive. There so many useful and legitimate reasons to do that – testing before updates, for example — but mainly easy recovery for things like this. And it was super easy. It was a huge advantage unique to Macs. We need that back.

@glennf @sixcolors Wait, what? I tried and could not, info I could find said it was no longer possible (security reasons). But that was with an early M1 and older OS, so maybe that has changed. If so, that’s great to know. Now I want to try again. When I ran into this full disk issue years ago, I had to boot from external, then start by deleting small files one at a time, each half the size of available space. Then work up to bigger ones as space grew.

@glennf Oh dang, no wonder. I was trying to create the boot drive from another (working) Mac. Which, you know, would sorta kinda really be useful when the internal drive of the one you want to fix is borked. Hmm.

Basically, you need to create one of those emergency boot disks BEFORE you need one. Do I have that right?

@Likewise @bookstodon While he was writing that book, he lived around the corner from my parents on a South Carolina barrier island. Every evening he walked past to the beach with his little dogs to take a swim at sunset. Often sat in rocking chairs on the deck at the little grocery by the marsh, telling stories. Super friendly and sociable for a writer. It was fun to have him around.

That's my theory exactly. And not just humans – all life above the level of bacteria coordinated to service the colonies. Even mitochondria were subsumed into their service.
