BC Wildfire Service: Under current & forecasted conditions, fire activity is expected to increase across northeast BC. A dry cold front is expected to cross the Fort Nelson zone mid-afternoon Friday. Wind gusts may exceed 70kph & shift direction rapidly.

These conditions are likely to contribute to continued new growth on holdover fires from the 2023 season, resulting in visible smoke from Fort Nelson and along the Alaska Hwy and Hwy77 corridors. https://blog.gov.bc.ca/bcwildfire/fire-activity-expected-to-increase-in-northeastern-bc/

☝︎TLDR: Armed Israeli residents set fire TWICE to the #UNRWA headquarters in East #Jerusalem last night while staff were inside. The mob was chanting "Burn down the #UnitedNations."

Israeli police and fire were slow to respond, forcing the director and staff to try fighting the fire themselves while surrounded by an armed mob - very dangerous.

This is the second attack in a week, and protests by similar angry mobs have been ongoing for 2 months - called by member of the #Jerusalem govt. And staff have faced harassment and intimidation and guns pulled on them.

So the compound is being closed until #Israel can ensure it's protection as required by #InternationalLaw

@exador23@m.ai6yr.org avatar

Once again, I can currently find no western news articles about the attack on UNRWA headquarters in Jerusalem.

Searches on both Google and DuckDuckGo for "UNRWA attack" and "UNRWA fire" are either non-western sources, or are about the allegations of Hamas affiliated staff. "UNRWA Jerusalem" provided the most relevant results, but again, no western sources show up.

Where are you Reuters? BBC?

exador23,
@exador23@m.ai6yr.org avatar

A couple hours later, and "UNRWA Jerusalem" search reveals BBC, The Guardian, and AP have all added stories about the attack on their compound by an armed Israel mob that set fire to it.

Still no Reuters, NYTimes, Wapo, etc showing up via search yet. But at least AP picking it up means a number of local US papers that rely on their content will probably print the news.

What sort of world are we living in, where an attack on a UN facility isn't big and immediate news???

Important read. It definitely feels like this is more than an small operation. This is a rare report on the current conditions in #Rafah from an American former career military man now the deputy director of UNRWA...

https://www.politico.com/news/2024/05/08/israel-rafah-scott-anderson-unrwa-00156924

What we’re seeing today is an increase in the amount of people that are displacing from Rafah, not just the areas that were given evacuation orders but across Rafah itself. Roads are quite clogged. UNRWA had seven shelters inside the evacuation zone, all emptied. Each one had 5,000-7,000 people. We’ve seen a larger presence from the IDF on the ground. There were strikes today further West into Rafah town proper, well outside of the evacuation zone.

exador23,
@exador23@m.ai6yr.org avatar

Outside my window, there’s a big tent city area, with plastic makeshift structures. Yesterday I watched a whole bunch of people pack their stuff up & leave, & today I watched a bunch of other people come in & set their tents up. I think they move from East Rafa to West Rafa, and I think they are just trying to stay ahead of what they see as the operation. People who have been displaced multiple times are taking all their belongings with them.

Some are trying to go to Al-Mawasi. It is a crappy place. It’s like trying to set up a city on a beach. There’s no infrastructure, no sewage, no water. None of those things exist & there’s already 450,000 people in that general area. It is crowded.

High Country News has a nice piece up today about Trail

When is it appropriate to call out bad trail etiquette? https://www.hcn.org/articles/when-is-it-appropriate-to-call-out-bad-trail-etiquette/

“Is this something that just bothers me specifically, or is this something that is a safety concern?”

If it’s something that endangers other people or the environment — throwing rocks off a cliff onto a trail below or building a campfire during a fire ban — Matias suggests reaching out to park officials. But if you’re in a wilderness setting, Mapp suggests acting with empathy & respect, rather than accusation. Start, for example, by learning where the other person is coming from and why they may be acting in a certain way.

@ai6yr can confirm inre planes. Me and one other traveling companion were the only ones masked either way to Oregon this weekend. Our 3rd decided he didn't need one for some reason. (And I strongly suspect the 2nd wouldn't have worn his if I wasn't there to put mine on first)

At least I didn't notice any weird looks from folks for wearing it. Including in bigger stores in Oregon. But I was still on the left coast. I imagine it would be different in the Trumplandia.

Freelance Journalist (and labor activist) Talia Jane:

This morning, students at #Columbia University picketed outside the homes of three trustees.

At two of the three locations, random harassers suckerpunched student picketers. At one, a car drove into a student. NYPD arrested the victim.

The attacker is Reuven Kahane, a cousin of Meir Kahane, the late fascist founder of the JDL and the murderous #Kahanist movement in occupied Palestine

Student picketer who was struck by Kahane this morning was detained and is in the hospital, handcuffed to a bed, awaiting x-rays. Early reports of a wrist injury.

Biden's comments today were the nail in the coffin on his re-election bid.

Students say Biden risks ‘losing entire generation of voters’ over his Gaza policy & condemnation of college protests. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/5/2/no-surprise-us-students-slam-bidens-comments-on-gaza-encampments

Biden did not comment on university policies or use of force by police. Nor did he remark on reports that pro-Israel demonstrators attacked demonstrators at the UCLA encampment this week. Instead, he said there is no place on college campuses for “anti-Semitism or threats of violence against Jewish students”

“For Biden to demonise us in this way is honestly incredibly disappointing. It paints a target on the backs of Arab, Muslim, Palestinian, anti-Zionist youth.”

exador23,
@exador23@m.ai6yr.org avatar

Biden’s approval rating stands at 28 percent among voters under age 30, according to a Pew Research Center survey released last week.

A recent CNN poll also showed that a staggering 81 percent of voters younger than 35 disapprove of Biden’s handling of Israel’s war on Gaza.

“The Democrats can’t really afford to give people more reasons to vote against Biden, and this actually becomes one,” Omar Wasow, assistant professor of political science at the University of California, Berkeley, told Al Jazeera.

Biden's overall favorability stands at 38.7%. Clinton's in 2016 was 42%, and we know how that worked out. And she didn't have a youth problem, an arab problem, and a genocide problem

ACLED* has their latest brief on the Gaza/Israel protests out. https://acleddata.com/2024/05/02/pro-palestine-us-student-protests-nearly-triple-in-april-acled-brief/

While some notable violent clashes have recently taken place, ... the overwhelming majority — 99% — have remained peaceful.

Demonstrations involving students make up roughly one-third of all US demonstrations related to the conflict since it reignited in October 2023.

Police intervention against conflict-related student demonstrations more than quadrupled in April... in cases where student demonstrators have gathered unopposed, police have intervened against pro-Palestine demonstrations more than four times as often as pro-Israel demonstrations.

Frustrated with DuckDuckGo. I need solid news searches.

When I read about something newsworthy, I like to read several articles on it. i.e. Saudi Arabia is arresting people for anti-Israel social media posts.

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=saudi+arabia+crackdown+anti-israeli

Plenty of articles, except every single one of them when read references a Bloomberg report. But that report isn't in the search results, and of the derivative articles I've read, none of them link back to the source.

exador23,
@exador23@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@Sherifazuhur

  1. I provided a non-paywall version of the article.

  2. It is a well-reported story. The veracity is sound with a multitude of sources including:

"...a significant increase in prisoners at the maximum-security facility over the past six months. This was corroborated by several diplomats in the Saudi capital and human-rights organizations, who said they have been tracking a spike in social media-related arrests since Oct. 7."

Seeing people posting negative things, and Saudis stepping up arrests of people saying negative things are not mutually exclusive truths.

exador23,
@exador23@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@Sherifazuhur again, those are not mutually exclusive truths.

Disputing that is like saying it's impossible that US universities are cracking down on pro-Palestine student protests, because there are 100s of such protests happening right now.
The continued prevalence of protests does not mean that the crackdowns aren't real.

I hear and believe your lived experience.

I also believe the "Riyadh-based diplomats and human rights groups" who have seen a "recent spate of arrests" and that those arrests are "motivated by security concerns specifically linked to the deadly Oct. 7 invasion of Israel by Hamas and its aftermath."
