Another one of my fics copied over to my personal site: "Five People Who Never Summoned Wei Wuxian," one of my first fics in the fandom https://ehyde.neocities.org/fic/fivepeople

Time to start a reading thread and hope I don't lose track of it like the last one (I've been on here a year and still don't know how to search my own posts)

"Characters reading the book" is a genre of fanfic I have never vibed with but it turns out: when it's not actually a fic and the canon isn't real, it's actually great.

This same "using the Mary Sue to find a magical item in the snow that only appears when she's on the brink of death" plot point happened in Something's Not Right, too. I wonder which book was written first

I, too, would be annoyed if I lost my kickass skeleton body

I have unfortunately been spoiled in this regard but I still enjoy seeing a female character taking the place of one of the "canon" love interests. I haven't seen them together enough to say if I'd ship them but you can't fault me for thinking in that direction.

That's. Perhaps slightly misleading, Wenren E (but also no, keep going, you're getting there)

ehyde,
@ehyde@federatedfandom.net avatar

Honestly this doesn't seem like a terrible idea

I should finish writing that fic someday...

I just want to say. That I like him very much.

General question to readers: what's your top three fav danmei?

(Regardless of objective quality)

ehyde,
@ehyde@federatedfandom.net avatar

@geraineon --I was about to write Tai Sui and remembered at the last second that it's not actually danmei 😅

hm, I've got to think a little harder now

ehyde,
@ehyde@federatedfandom.net avatar

@geraineon okay out of actualfax danmei I think it's MDZS, Evil As Humans, and Copper Coins. I'm also curious how this might be different a year from now, there's a lot I haven't read

ehyde,
@ehyde@federatedfandom.net avatar

@geraineon @aegtx I really enjoyed They All Say I've Met a Ghost too, it was so much fun!

ehyde,
@ehyde@federatedfandom.net avatar

@geraineon @aegtx that was actually the first cnovel I made into a physical book (in large part because I could fit it into a single volume)

I was reminded I had some novellas I got in an ebook sale to read so I'm reading "If Found Return to Hell" by Em X Liu. So far we have: wizard call centers! A mysterious talisman causing a phone operator from said wizard call center to get in over their head! Second person narration! I'm not very far into it yet but it looks like it'll be a fun read.

Where was that post saying the phrase "toe off their shoes" only ever appeared in fanfic and never in published books? Well it's here XD

ehyde,
@ehyde@federatedfandom.net avatar

@aegtx I would not be surprised but I don't know enough about them to say

ehyde,
@ehyde@federatedfandom.net avatar

Anyway I'm not saying this novella is a modern-with-magic cnovel au fic with the serial numbers filed off because it is in fact an original story, but. If you like modern-with-magic cnovel au fics you'll probably enjoy this too.

Fun ways to signal the gender ambiguity of your nonbinary pov character: one half of the demon+human bodysharing duo calls them "jiejie" and the other calls them "dage."

ehyde,
@ehyde@federatedfandom.net avatar

@geraineon @aegtx hah, now I want to read their fic XD

And now I'm at "what to read next?" again :D I have a lot on my list but will gladly accept recs too

ehyde,
@ehyde@federatedfandom.net avatar

@geraineon I think I'll read Devil Venerable next!

Alright I finished #Sendoff ! It definitely picked up in the second half and it's in the "would recommend" category, although not as strongly as Evil As Humans.

The main issue I had with it was that a large part of what made me care about the main couple was knowing their backstories and how they tied into the main plot. I didn't find them as compelling at the start of the novel, when most of that was a mystery even to them. Whereas in Evil As Humans, Yin Ren was a joy to read about no matter what was happening. Sendoff was significantly shorter than EAH -- but I feel like it should have either been even shorter and more focused, or longer so that it could have given more screentime to the side characters who were honestly more interesting as people to me.

ehyde,
@ehyde@federatedfandom.net avatar

@geraineon definitely! I think I'm going to read Happy Doomsday next, of hers. But I don't think I'll jump straight into it

Nian Zhong in author's notes: btw here's a fascinating parasite!
Me, reading the wikipedia article: new omegaverse dropped???

ehyde,
@ehyde@federatedfandom.net avatar

It pleases me immensely (and does not surprise me) that Nian Zhong is the type to drop "here's a neat weird parasite" in the notes 😄
