Time to start a reading thread and hope I don't lose track of it like the last one (I've been on here a year and still don't know how to search my own posts)

Starting a reading thread for

So far, this novel is taking a much more realistic approach to AI than Happy Doomsday 🤣

[original story 1/8]

The captain of the king’s guard wakes up with strange lights and a voice inside his head. The voice explains that it’s something called the facilitating AI of a transmigration game (whatever that is), but most people in the captain’s position would call it “System.”

The captain, you see, saw something he shouldn’t have (here he finds he has no memory of this) and was marked as an immediate host for transmigration. “But you’re my favorite character,” System tells him. “I had to do the install, but I destroyed the incoming data. I didn’t want to replace you.”

Nian Zhong does such cool worldbuilding (reading Happy Doomsday).

Reading thread for #EvilAsHumans, because I keep wanting to share bits of this novel as I read it. And I am also going to call this my #DecRecs for today, with the caveat that I'm not even a quarter through the book.

The premise: some sort of great eldritch horror (the translation uses the rather generic phrase "evil spirit," but given some of the descriptions of these things, "eldritch" is definitely appropriate) has been freed from his thousand-years seal. He would very much like to just blend into the human world, go unnoticed, and have a chance to relax. But instead, he gets roped into the local secret not-quite-government paranormal agency. So far he's managed to keep up the human guise...

This is categorized as horror but I would call it urban fantasy with horror elements. It has ghosts and creatures and a decent amount of gore and body horror, but not really the mood of a horror story. The first arc/case had a happy ending and there's a lot of humor throughout.

I was reminded I had some novellas I got in an ebook sale to read so I'm reading "If Found Return to Hell" by Em X Liu. So far we have: wizard call centers! A mysterious talisman causing a phone operator from said wizard call center to get in over their head! Second person narration! I'm not very far into it yet but it looks like it'll be a fun read.

I started reading another Nian Zhong novel (Sendoff) and was immediately presented with a 300yo immortal who wants to die but can't. It's like she knows me.

Have inadvertently gotten 5yo interested in a fiber art by virtue of They Have Looms In Minecraft

Now to decide what to read next. Maybe I'll post a poll too!

What is the science behind the thing where sometimes a grayscale image (usually dot patterned, like a manga screentone) will look like it's striped orange and blue at certain resolutions?

I finished "Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know" and one thing I loved about it (there were many) is how it turns the "utterly devoted love interest" trope on its head. Yin Hanjiang starts out as this, and over the course of the novel grows into someone who no longer has to suppress pieces of himself for the sake of what he thinks Wenren E wants him to be.

What is the best place to buy ebooks if I want to actually own them?

New instance, new #introduction !

Hi, I'm Hyde, I've been in fandom in some form or other for 20+ years, and for the past couple of years my main hobby has been #bookbinding. Lately I've been reading a lot of #danmei and other cnovels (most of my bookbinding so far has been MDZS fanfic), and I'm a longtime sff fan. I also write fic, although I've been less active there lately.

Nian Zhong in author's notes: btw here's a fascinating parasite!
Me, reading the wikipedia article: new omegaverse dropped???

What cnovel should I read next? This may be an interesting poll because although all of these have been recced to me elsewhere, I don't know if anyone here has read them

I still want to see a fic in which hanahaki flowers produce sex pollen

Currently reading: this wangxian fic in which WWX wakes up after being frozen in ice for over a thousand years. It's incomplete, but the author says they have a complete draft and it seems to be updating regularly. https://archiveofourown.org/works/52150927/chapters/131906695

I'm not sure what I should read next. Any recs?

ehyde, to random
@ehyde@federatedfandom.net avatar

I have been reading ATLA fic across the past week and huh, that fandom does a lot more "rewrite every single plot point slightly to the left" canon-divergent aus than mdzs fandom does. I really didn't miss that flavor of fic!

(I will gladly take recs if anyone's got 'em, Zuko centric preferred)

Kids are creating dnd (ish) characters. 7yo heard about dragonborn and didn't stop to ask questions, immediately invented a backstory with a human mom and a dragon dad (I do not think this is how dragonborn work but I am not the dnd parent)

ehyde, to random
@ehyde@federatedfandom.net avatar

And now I'm at "what to read next?" again :D I have a lot on my list but will gladly accept recs too

Experimental bookbinding

There was talk on discord about styling books based on corsetry and I immediately thought, "but what if it's not just aesthetic? what if it's functional?"

In this sketchbook, the sections are sewn individually, pamphlet style. The lacing is the only thing holding everything together. #HydeMakesBooks #bookbinding

The same book, open and standing up, for a different view of the lacing

At the time it was kind of annoying but in retrospect, all the "this is a shojo manga" comments on Yona ch100 and the pages getting overlaid with shojo sparkles were the funniest thing. I think about that every time someone says that TGCF should be restricted to 18+ for gore.

I would like to play the ships game too! I'm not sure how many fandoms we share but y'all can definitely ask me about MDZS ships at any rate
