Hey, #westmarches folks: how do your games start? Do your characters talk? Do you dive right into whatever travel procedure you've established? What's the actual first 10-15 minutes of play involve in a campaign of that style?

dmr,

@nickdrawthing I gave my players a map with three adventure prompts (based on NPC needs) and then asked them to self-organize.

They picked the date, group composition, and mission they wanted to go on.

We started out with a round of character descriptions, then moved into a navigation test. I got them into a scrap early so they could settle into their characters and made sure to introduce two new possible adventures along the way to keep the campaign moving.

dmr,

@nickdrawthing There is some, but I will say that WM is a fairly objective-based style. Everyone knows they only have so much time to complete the mission so they tend to play with a fair amount of focus.

I'd suggest not trying to pack too much into a given session so that players feel that portraying their character won't be at the expense of reaching their goal.

In hindsight I should have played up more of a play-by-post style of RP between sessions to let PCs get more of those moments.

2024... now what?

I figured I'd do a bit of a year in review for my

2023 was the year of supplemental material for me. Unlike 2022 everything I published this year built on top of other people's games. That's good and bad; on one hand I got the experience of working under other writing styles and engaging with a bunch of different hacks. On the other it means that my original works were all pushed back.

I'm really proud of the work I did this year (by and large), so let's get to them!

dmr,

In Feb, I published "Tales from the Ultraverse" a #slugblaster splat book for Ultranauts.

So much to say about this one:

  • I love drawing maps, and got to make a map of my hometown and port it into Slugblaster, which was an absolute delight!
  • Ultranauts are all about going to new dimensions and messing with dimensional weirdness, and I was able to include 8 new worlds to the semi-canon of the world. They're diverse, and really brought out my joy for the system and world Mikey created (1/2)
dmr,
  • It was made in a game jam and included in a bundle for teen mental health. We raised OVER $1000 which was an incredibly pleasant surprise.
  • It was the longest thing I'd made to date, as well as the most information-dense and it was very well received from the people who got the bundle.
  • I'm still waiting to hear stories of people using the book in the campaign.
  • I think my only regret was that layout-wise it was pretty basic. I tried to fit the b&w zine format 5.5x8.5" and I can do more.
dmr,

In June, I published a reference sheet for players.

I'm running a game now, and wanted something for my players, so of course I decided to do proper layout and give them a cool handout.

Why not post it to itch? https://dmrawlings.itch.io/bitd-reference-sheet

It shipped with a few typos, but really laid out the game how I think about it, and it included game terminology that I know confused me in the early days.

People are always finding it on itch and bumping up my baseline numbers <3

Hey folks, the Bump in the Dark Bundle for Teen Mental Health and Housing #bundle is now live, and features the core rulebook plus 16 other jam projects, including my 3 hunts in "A Song of Autumn".

Bump in the Dark is a monster-hunting #fitd #bitd hack set in a fictional American Midwest area. Inspired by shows like Supernatural, or Buffy: the Vampire Slayer.

I enjoyed using Iron Country's extensive lore and coming up with some wacky mysteries to solve.

  • dmr,

@RM_Transit @forpeterssake I'm really curious to see where we're at 20 years from now after the rise of urbanist content creators.

Folks like Reece are creating new consensus in America, and it's that kind of multi-generational adjustments that change the conversation.

    Every bit really helps.

  • dmr,

@genesisoflegend Any example of where you've seen that done well?

I feel like Blades in the Dark's Doskval does it fairly well, but I'm sure there are many others.

  • dmr,

@genesisoflegend Absolutely! The longer I let things simmer the better they end up being, it't tricky to leave things 'in the hopper' that long and not submit things, though, and I find it difficult to juggle multiple projects at one time - they each want to use my full passive shower time.

    dmr,

@joshhunt @llebrun a month later, but if the Mastodon app doesn't let you sign up through the mobile app, then it won't require data collection on email.

When you later log in, you'll enter your email, but then it's not collecting it; it's comparing that to the email already in its database.

More broadly, these permissions are about what the app can directly access on your device. If later you opt into sharing an image or whatever, that wouldn't count for these perms.
