Another fun thing I'm reminding myself of with the CD-ROM stuff I'm writing: there's some real-time timekeeping data that has the current relative position inside the track... and sometimes that goes backwards.

@misty what a mess. I hope DVDs learned from this

Here i am at seedy pierogi bar, or what passes for seedy in Ottawa anyway. Note Joust machine in background. Joust is tops.

@adr I've been there. C4L North at the university, i think

@hiringlibrarians holy shit am I violently offended by this entry (as always, it ain't about you, you're a treasure). https://hiringlibrarians.com/2015/06/04/join-the-church/

@adr @hiringlibrarians "We define 'hireable' as 'willing to live in Hawai'i, but will reject non-Mormon candidates" definitely sounds like a you problem.

Extremely off the cuff conference thoughts -- I know people book venues years ahead of time, but at this point it really seems like conferences need to put something in their contracts that allows them to cancel without penalty if the locality passes legislation which will make the region unsafe for attendees.

djfiander,
@djfiander@code4lib.social avatar

@platypus a minor tangent: You know how behind the pharmacy counter where you go to pick up your prescriptions there are shelves with random "over the counter" stuff that you need to ask for, but don't need a prescription for?

I noticed last week that in those shelves in my Canadian drug store is a whole shelf of big friendly-blue coloured boxes proudly labeled "Plan B".

In bringing charges against former president Trump, Special Counsel Smith has created a dilemma that threatens to further divide our already fractured nation.

I mean, of course, should the future federal Indictment Day holiday be celebrated on the anniversary of the date of the grand jury's filing, the date it was unsealed, or the date of Trump's first court appearance? Or should it be observed on a Monday, to guarantee all Americans a long weekend?

I hope we can resolve this peacefully.

@mattblaze how about orange jumpsuit day?

TechConnectify, to random

Realizing I don't have a perfect handle on how Trek-universe artificial gravity functions, it just occurred to me that incidents involving turbolifts falling down the shaft seem... silly

djfiander,
@djfiander@code4lib.social avatar

@TechConnectify Especially since that's a problem that Elisha Otis solved in the middle of the 19th C.

djfiander,
@djfiander@code4lib.social avatar

@siderea @TechConnectify I mean, they also seem to think that force fields are a perfectly good way to put a window into the side of a spaceship. Because no starship has ever lost power for even a second.

The biggest problem with burning everything down, however much we may want it, is obviously the impact on the air quality.

Imperial units are a pain all round, but I cannot even begin to describe how maddening “thousandths of an inch” are. OH LOOK.. AREN’T DECIMALS USEFUL? I suppose that some other weird subdivision of an inch would be worse, but really, if you can cope with thousandths of an inch, what’s so hard about a centimetre? #units #rant

djfiander,
@djfiander@code4lib.social avatar

@helenczerski yup. 0.1 inch is a standard division that's used in the electronics industry for various dimensions as well, like spacing between pins, etc.

Aliette de Bodard. The Red Scholar's wake.

Space opera and factional politics swirl around the growing romance between a pirate ship mind and one of her captives.

I've been reading a lot of f/f fiction recently for some reason.

djfiander,
@djfiander@code4lib.social avatar

TJ Klune. 2019. The house in the cerulean sea.

Good, but I think that Under the Whispering Door is better. Slow burn gay modern day fantasy romance with found family and a struggle for acceptance.

The burn is so slow that all the other characters are getting annoyed with them for not recognizing it, which is always fun.

Pat Murphy. 1999. There and Back Again.

An extremely thinly veiled pastiche of The Hobbit. Amusing, well executed, but not worth seeking out unless you're a completionist of one sort or another.

djfiander,

Martha Wells. 2023. Witch King.

A rich fantasy world in which a demon and a witch awaken after having been imprisoned for a year, and set out to find their companion and determine who imprisoned them. Self contained, but there is a lot of room for sequels or just more books in the same world.

Book cover always look so much worse on monochrome eReaders

Ann Leckie. 2023. Translation State.

A new book by Leckie is always a joy to read. She returns to (a new part of) the universe of Ancillary Justice for a space opera with lots of action that's also an exploration of family, and identity, and gender. "I'm a princex in disguise!"

Started it yesterday, finished today. Forgot to eat.

Sangu Mandanna. 2022. The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches.

Modern witches, romance, enemies to lovers, found family, secrets.

I was so engrossed, my Fitbit thought I was asleep. Read it in one sitting.
