I'm usually hesitant to share too much about my son, Ripley, or his situation but our situation (US, WV/OH) changed last week. Ripley is about 18 months old and we've known since he was born that he would need a #KidneyTransplant once he was big enough. Until last week, our plan was for him to get one of mine. My aunt is in the process of cleaning out my grandma’s house. This means that I have a box about the size of a small refrigerator full of my childhood toys, some of them unopened. Tons of awesome #StarWars toys from the 90s. But it also means that I have two equally large boxes full of #VHS tapes of home movies and recorded television from the 90s. Is YouTube the best place for uploading old TV and movies like that? #preservation

When I see ideas like this from @louie, it makes me want to put more effort into my blog so badly. Every time I start to though, I immediately talk myself down to "Well, I don't have time to write anything too long." and I always just end up back at posting things here on Mastodon. There is something so cool about the idea of blogging but I always slap the "micro" on the front and end up just posting here. Maybe #ActivityPub in #Wordpress is the answer?

Today in “I refuse to pay for more than 2tb of iCloud storage” is all about video quality. Exporting all of my 4k/60 footage that is over 512mb and scaling it to 720p and then putting it back. All we ever do is text these videos, so it’s not like we need instant/mobile access to full quality. The originals will get backed up twice, once to Backblaze Personal and once to B2, not to mention my local copy.

The Rise of Skywalker is probably the best looking of any #StarWars movie, IMO. The effects, costuming, sets, etc. are all great. Hell, even the color grading and audio mix are near perfect. Any ounce of positivity stops there though. Every frame of actual story is virtually irredeemable. It’s like a masterfully choreographed, pixel perfect car crash.

As with Mastodon in the wake of Twitter, I feel so much more compelled to share on #Kbin than I ever did on #Reddit. These public, open services feel like ours in a way that makes corporate social feel like a weird anachronism. We’ve finally stopped doing unpaid labor for the ultra rich and it feels like we have a chance to build something new and apart from that.

I use Chrome for work and Safari for personal stuff and I always feel compelled to replace Chrome with literally anything else. Sticking with Chromium, I like the look and feel of Edge, and it does feel faster, but only after you disable every single “value-add” that Microsoft attaches to it. No, I don’t want my browser to hunt for coupons or suggest financing to me. It’s such a nice browser but they attach actual malware to every inch of it.

Sometimes I wish I had made @mastowatch a subscription so that I could more easily justify building features that have a recurring cost to me. I’ve tossed around adding things like Mastodon instance reviews and ratings, even just basic thumbs up and down, but I couldn’t justify the backend server costs with what the app makes right now. What apps like Apollo did, where there is one time charge but then a subscription for even more features could be an option 🤔

What are some good examples of blogs, even small ones, that have federated their actual websites? Thinking of sites using the #ActivityPub plugin for #Wordpress or similar and that actually post regularly with multiple authors. Trying to see what the best practice is so I can help make recommendations to people or orgs that have a WP blog but haven’t gone in on Fedi yet.
