Damn, these naïve, idealistic protests are just turning the average person against climate protestors. This time they stuck a huge sticker across an unprotected Monet, there's no excuse for that.

I have worked in a non-profit environment org for 30 years, and this sort of protest does nothing for the cause, it just makes people tar all environmentalists with the same brush.

Absolutely stupid.

@LanceTurner It was protected.

Average people should all be climate activists. That's the problem. Average people have their heads up their asses.

Activists are getting desperate because:

  • The political processes are BROKEN and NOTHING is being done to legislate change.

  • The public blames lawmakers and corporations BUT the public also just goes about flying, driving, consuming. NO protesting and a lot of pretending there is no problem.

This is a right NOW.

My M4 iPad Pro review is live on YouTube. It CAN be used as a legitimate “pro” device. In fact, I used it as my only computer for two weeks—everything I do on my Mac, I could do on the iPad. But it was painful and inconvenient. https://youtu.be/sFJuAjyWOc4?si=msKv-tAD8nExAVst

@snazzyq It's a bummer that YouTubers are more interested in clickbait controversy rather than honest content based on facts. You might bother to learn how to use iPadOS rather than spout inaccuracies. You're either too lazy to learn or deliberately misleading for clicks. Neither option looks very good. But, you're in the business of pretend outrage and people love it. Gotta get your cash and build your "brand".

Well done.

@LeonOmelan @snazzyq Yep, you'll find a partial list and easy to understand, detailed explanation in the link below. Nothing too complicated and easy for anyone that actually knows how to use iPadOS.

From @markgurman on and
"The Siri personal assistant will get an upgrade as well, with more natural-sounding interactions based on Apple’s own large language models"

To me, two biggest Siri needs are:

  • More reliable understanding
  • Context (for follow-up ?s, or fine tune a request)

More "natural sounding" is nice, but not on my list.

During a typical day my attention turns over various aspects of humans and the climate crisis. At least once a day, some days it might be half a day, the thoughts come and go along with a generally persistent climate anxiety. Often times the thoughts are replays of variations of questions about why humans are failing to act to preserve their future. Today as I walked my dog Cosmo I considered the different approaches we could be taking...

I just had one of my favorite meals. Relatively climate friendly, simple, healthy, easy, quick to make, low cost, vegetarian/vegan:

  • Baked potato using microwave
  • Microwave 1/2 cup of refried beans with taco seasonings and enchilada sauce or salsa mixed in to make it into a kind of thick sauce
  • Pour the refried beans over the potato and mash it up a bit
  • Optional: cheese, browned/fried or raw onions, bell peppers, or other veggies

It appears to be a breakout of “zombie fires”: wildfires from last year that never actually went out completely but carried on smoldering underground, reigniting ground vegetation again this year. They’ve been pouring smoke—once again—into northern cities in the United States. That haze is loaded with a more obscure form of carbon...

@aral @StillIRise1963 American is not a civilized nation and blocks progress at every turn. It's not the champion of democracy and freedom it pretends to be.

America is violence for profit.

Best thing that could happen would be for the world to shun the US, treat it as a pariah state it is. The people here, most notably the white middle class, will stand in the way of progress because they don't want to rock the boat. They've got their comfortable lives to lose.

dennyhenke,
@dennyhenke@social.coop avatar

@StillIRise1963 @aral The US blocks repeatedly progress in solving a variety of global crises. It's a long list. The climate emergency stands out as the most evident and immediate. The world needs a rebalance of leadership.

Internally our politics move RIGHT, RIGHT, RIGHT. The political process is broken and most here, certainly the white middle class are too glued to their distractions and comforts to be bothered to act in any meaningful way.

dennyhenke,
@dennyhenke@social.coop avatar

@StillIRise1963 @aral No, I'm not. You don't need it explained to you.

I was offering one possible perspective of the problem: Global US hegemony and often US criminal behavior that is tolerated when it shouldn't be.

If the US is, more often than not, an impediment to progress then a part of solving the problem is to lessen its influence in the process and redistribute power amongst other nations. And the US should be held to account for its wrong doings.

After WWDC 2022 Federico Viticci was very loud in his advocacy that Stage Manager should be optimized to run on older iPads many of which had only 4 to 6GB of memory.

In his recent post "Why iPadOS Still Doesn’t Get the Basics Right" he’s complaining that Stage Manager should do more because new iPads are more powerful.

Which is it? Build features that take advantage of more powerful iPads or restrict features to accommodate older hardware?

Normally when there is a topic making the rounds that I don't care about, I put in a bit of effort to just not say anything about it. Sometimes I put on a timed mute for a couple of keywords, keep it out of my eyes for a couple of days so I don't have to deal with feeling annoyed.

But that Apple thing today... man. It saddens me to see so many people spill so many words about computers built so carefully to prevent you from stretching your imagination.

@WTL @scruss @gnomon Not only can you save files but most apps will let you save to a variety of cloud services and/or copy, move to or from those services. This includes usb drives and networked drives as well. I regularly access external drives connected via my Mac with is just a file server these days. And share files with clients that use GoogleDrive, Microsoft OneDrive and Dropbox. Easy to access right from the sidebar of the iPad Files app.

The problem with Apple is that they basically have the same play every time out and it’s utterly predictable: They increase the processing power without changing what the products are fundamentally about. That means, every time they release a new iPad Pro it misses the target market entirely.

dennyhenke,
@dennyhenke@social.coop avatar

@ernie @ivan There are a lot of people with opinions on the iPad that have never used one or perhaps only used one casually and perhaps didn't actually learn how to use it. I've seen comments just today from people that didn't realize it's possible to save files on an iPad. 😂

@ernie @ivan Oh, wanted to share a recent blog post. I write fairly often about the iPad and in this particular post I included a list of some of the more popular iPad apps as an indicator of how many people use the iPad as a work computer. Popular productivity iPad apps get tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands to millions of reviews. Which would seem to indicate they really are being used for something other than youtube.

While most are focused on the new iPad hardware I’ll start with what I consider the more important bits.

@tantramar Yep. I was thinking earlier about all the folks that have Macs that never do anything other than email, browse the web, maybe do some basic word processing, spreadsheets, etc... basically, just using the Mac casually but you don't hear that discussed as an issue. I'd guess that MOST users of most devices actually spend the vast majority of their time doing those very casual things. The Mac is primarily a consumption device. 🤣

    @lkanies @mph I write about the iPad way too often. That said, I'm actually someone that is actually very satisfied rather than frustrated. It's been my favorite computer for several years.

    I have a healthy relationship with the iPad but an unhealthy relationship with iPad content as I find my self frustrated with others' frustration. 🤣🤓😬

    I fear the current wave of excitement is bound to lead to a wave of frustration when/if the iPad does not transform into a Mac.

The binge-fest that birds enjoy during these periods supersize their families and, in turn, shift the eating and hunting patterns of many other species. These effects send ripples throughout the ecosystem. As one recent study put it, pulses of periodical cicadas can “rewire” entire forest food webs."
