within the last year or so @Posit has taken a big tranche of venture capital. VC wants one thing: a massive return, 10x minimum. there are two ways to get that. first is to take a company public. I don't think that's likely here. second is a buy out by a major player like Oracle, Microsoft, Amazon, or another of that ilk. I guess this is what posit's sugar daddy is likely angling for. this isn't unprecedented in the world. who else remembers Revolution R?

It appears that some universities are banning masks of any kind at sites where they are holding their graduation ceremony. This is ableist, exclusionary, and completely unacceptable.

I'd guess the ban is not for the campus as a whole but for Gampel pavilion, in the background of the photo. it is the venue for the larger graduation ceremonies at uconn

"Americans are forced to live with a risk of car crash death roughly three times higher than Canadians and Australians, five times higher than Brits and Germans, and nine times higher than Norwegians. It’s also worth pointing out that globally, car crashes are a major cause of death, killing more people than homicides and suicides combined"

just stopping by to say that #MicrosoftTeams still sucks

davidbraze, to linuxmint
@davidbraze@mstdn.social avatar

Well, I updated #linuxMint to 21.1 and the cinnamon/mint menu became v slow and laggy

Turns out that somewhere along the line the screen reader was turned on and I didn't notice because I keep volume muted

turning off screen reader fixed menu responsiveness

Is that no longer a thing?

An awful lot of "storytelling with data" is plain storytelling

The data is just window dressing, at best

Hello #emacs

Is there a convenient built-in function that works like cycle-spacing, but for blank lines?

dusted off a 2015 vintage Dell optiplex mini tower that had been sitting idle for about 4 years, plugged in a wifi card and installed (originally ran Windows 10)

it works like a champ

dunno yet what I'm going to do with it though

lack of access to information has never been the main problem

the ability to filter it from the sea of irrelevance, and occasional blobs of floating sewage, is what's in short supply

Hello #rstats folks

Is anyone aware of an R package wrapping ProPublica's Nonprofit Explorer API?

Hi #emacs folks,

I'm wanting to show/see svg graphics in eww

(image-type-available-p 'svg) returns t

eww, works, but svg images are not shown, though eww does not complain about them and other image types are shown as expected

to be a bit more specific, I want to show svg graphics created and served by the httpgd #rstats package

I am able to connect to the server and view graphics using firefox, so the httpgd service itself works

I'm running emacs 28.2 on linux mint

What am I missing?

What proportion of their total workforce?

What team(s)?

Do you really think MS takes better care of your company's data than they do of their own?
