It's kind of an English department cliche to try to get students interested by saying "hey kids, it's just like hip-hop." But, this modern-English gloss of the Flyting of Dunbar and Kennedie is almost eerily continuous with both the modern use of alliteration and internal rhyme along with styles of insult

dagnymol,

@ZachWeinersmith "Beshitten" is a word that absolutely needs to make a comeback

OLD THREAD REPOST

Your word of the day is SOOTERKIN. A sooterkin is a creature you give birth to after you sit on a stovetop to warm your bum while you're pregnant.

dagnymol,

@vagina_museum Stuart Little was the first thing I thought of, as I remember that (very odd) part of the book ... as a Weird Kid I thought it was pretty cool, actually, but mentioning it to adults has them reacting like I said something rather inappropriate, which was odd since it was right there in what was clearly a Classic Children's Book.

🤔 Do bicycles create empathy? Or do people that care about other people, tend to care about bikes?

Why is there such a big overlap between "bike infrastructure radicalized people," and "people that care about people that are different than themselves?"

Why is there such a low overlap between "people with trash hateful takes" and "people that want more bike infrastructure?"

dagnymol,

@colby @mekkaokereke I've seen that with people who want to ban automotive traffic from Detroit's Belle Isle. This would benefit the (largely white) group of Young People Who Do Sport at the expense of the (largely black) groups who use the park for large church and family gatherings -- the groups that have been using the park even when white folks found it scary.

So, I just made some fudge from a recipe that says to chill it once poured into a greased pan.

Given feedback on the fridge video... do y'all just never ever do that in Europe? Because, yeah, the little red fridge would not handle that well at all but I got a lot of folks being like "well, duh, you just don't put warm things in the fridge, everybody knows that" in the comments.

We don't know that because - get this - our fridges can usually just handle it!

dagnymol,

@TechConnectify @Nitrousoxide Absolutely, I put things in the fridge basically as soon as possible because I value food safety above some minimal loss in efficiency. But most people seem to still approach safety and hygiene as a matter of vibes.

So, throughout most of history in the "Christian World", vows were a pretty big deal. And more to the point, in the German folk tales I am studying, vows are absolutely sacred and breaking them will be a grave danger to the state of your immortal soul. Even if the vow was made under duress (and there are some very gruesome examples of duress) or while missing vital information (the fiancée who was believed dead is alive after all! Too bad about those monastic vows!), once you have made a vow, you are expected to adhere to it - no matter what.

However, what I don't get is how all of this is compatible with the New Testament, where Jesus states pretty clearly that you should make no vows at all (Matthew 5:33-37):

33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

So, how were those vows justified by Christian theology?

#theology #christianity

dagnymol,

@juergen_hubert At least some Christians don't. Although the cable news guys like to portray swearing on the Bible as the One True Way, some denominations such as Quakers refuse to swear oaths of any kind. Thus as a matter of law and religious freedom in the United States there has always the option of "swear or affirm".

That "Air Force AI killed the operator in simulation" going around does not pass the smell test for me.

@stevestreza A "thought experiment"? So basically the entire story is some dude went "hey what if a drone killed its operator", you know, because AI?

Listen I do understand if you don't particularly care about the Monarchy. But honestly all the coverage I see about Charles III is from self described republicans.

Do you really think it serves your cause to talk about him so much?

dagnymol,

@flameeyes That depends. If their cause is "make myself heard by a bunch of people" it seems to be working fairly well.

If you play cards in church during mass, the Devil might fetch you right then and there and drag you to Hell!

I am not sure if the same applies to playing on your smart phone, but personally I would not risk it.

Still remember this time I was looking out the window at the place I worked and was watching someone use a traffic cone to try and scrape the ice off their windshield.

My coworker just mumbled "that's not how you install VLC on windows" to himself as he walked by looking and nobody will ever tell a better joke than that.
