After speaking with CVS🙄 , I’m on hold with my insurance company trying to get a prescription filled one week early since I’m leaving for a month. They want me to pick it up the day I’m off to the airport. NOPE. wtf.

@StillIRise1963 the worst, it took me 4 days to sort out last time I had to do something similar

PHEVs are a fucking scam and labelling them as EVs is a lie

Plug-in hybrid cars ‘costing £500 a year more to refuel than lab tests suggest’ | Automotive industry | The Guardian

https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/may/27/plug-in-hybrid-cars-costing-more-to-refuel-than-lab-tests-suggest?CMP=aus_bsky

crazybutable,
@crazybutable@mastodon.social avatar

@anathema_device I do have a friend with a PHEV, she and her husband drive it frequently but usually less than 8 miles a day. They have to put fuel stabilizer in the tank and tend to get by with filling it up once every three to six months.

Then once or twice a year, they go visit her parents (or his parents, I don’t remember which)

I think PHEVs are a fine option if one is thoughtful about the intended use case of the vehicle they purchase and drive

crazybutable,
@crazybutable@mastodon.social avatar

@anathema_device if I recall correctly it’s a minivan and I’m not aware of any EVs that are minivans (and even if there is something on the market now there certainly wasn’t when they bought their vehicle)

I think that was the motivating factor when they purchased the car.

crazybutable,
@crazybutable@mastodon.social avatar

@anathema_device I wonder if this is something that is different in Australia vs the US. My understanding of PHEV vehicles is that manufacturers are moving away from them, they have higher maintenance costs, and they are kind of like, undesirable. Why bother?

crazybutable,
@crazybutable@mastodon.social avatar

@anathema_device In the US it’s “if you are a small business owner, buy a massive truck because you can deduct it on your taxes” (the appeal to economics)

“If you care about gas mileage, get a gas hybrid, they are good for the environment” (well meaning but common uninformed take I still hear from my older friends)

“If you want an EV, good for you, but you are going to have to do research to see if there is charging infrastructure for you in your community” (pretty accurate for my state)

crazybutable,
@crazybutable@mastodon.social avatar

@anathema_device really? Huh. That’s news to me.

But I guess if lived in a certain part of the country, I think a PHEV might make sense because there are no chargers back in rural Michigan. Yeah there are some chargers in the apps and on the maps but on the ground it’s hard to find ones that work.

In some parts of the country, the EV chargers get frequently vandalized. So if I lived in a red state, I’d really have to make 100 percent sure I could get home again with any EV trip

crazybutable,
@crazybutable@mastodon.social avatar

@anathema_device so the manufacturers don’t bother. It really pisses me off! Both of these rules need to be updated

If the suffering of Black people is invisible to you, then you miss so much of what's going on in the world. But if you can see Black people as entire human beings, then a few things immediately become apparent:

  1. Most hate comes from fans, not other players. Other players have only said, "Caitlin will be great. But even great rookies struggle adjusting to the competition level of the WNBA." Fans send death threats + racist slurs.

  2. Angel Reese gets much more hate than Caitlin Clark.

1/N

Caitlin Clark

@StillIRise1963 I know a few weeks ago you were complaining about search engines

I don’t know if anyone else has recommended it, but try mojeek.com

UK based, so no Russia or China governmental manipulation of results. And no user tracking!

Mojeek isn’t as good as Google was when Google was good, but a search engine thst would be third place in 2008 is MILES ahead of the current Google/Bing AI infused garbage we have today

crazybutable,
@crazybutable@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 I was searching for a series of recipes last night on Mojeek and got a whole bunch of good results. I needed a roasted potato recipe at 400 degrees (to match the other things I was cooking) so I searched for “roasted potatoes at 400 degrees” and it came through perfectly with multiple good results.

I would never trust Google with that query because they do shit like rewrite “400” to “425”, like what the actual fuck Google

So, if police departments sell their guns, what do they do with the guns they get from the gun drives that take them off the streets? Where do those guns go?

crazybutable,
@crazybutable@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 they sell them to companies who say they dispose of them, but those companies disassemble them into parts, and sell the parts

Nobody is melting down guns in America

crazybutable,
@crazybutable@mastodon.social avatar

@jalcine @StillIRise1963 all of these people thinking they are doing something good by getting guns off the street and all they are doing is giving money to the police

Because the guns just get resold as parts, then people assemble the parts

"CBS News, in partnership with The Trace and Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting, reviewed records from hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the United States and found that many had routinely resold or traded in their used duty weapons -- a practice that has sent thousands of guns into the hands of criminals.”

Our lives mean NOTHING to these people. THIS IS A SICK GAME.

crazybutable,

@LenW @StillIRise1963 @Aviva_Gary @_L1vY_ in Minnesota the concealed carry permits are conditional on the gun owners obeying posted signs banning guns on private or public property that has the appropriate signage. I went to the baseball game last night and they had signs up banning guns, knives, or any weapons

Is that universally respected? Probably not but I hope so. Any private business can post the signs. I don’t know how it works in other states

The mail settings got screwed up somehow on my mom's iPad and she went into the Apple store to get them to help her reset it. They told her, "Your iPad is too old, mail is no longer supported on it."

crazybutable,

@jwz I had a ridiculous bug in iMessage where every time I messaged my friend, it would create a new 20 person group text with random contacts. So when my friend replied, it went out to the group text.

Every time I removed everyone from the group text and started over, we’d get a new group chat with 20 new random people in it.

Nobody could help me. When I updated to a new iPhone, the entire chat history from my friend was completely deleted. But hey now I can message him again.

I was at the grocery store last night and every checkout line was very backed up. A pair of women with an extremely full shopping cart got into the 15-items-or-less line and caused further delays by asking questions about the prices of many items, and having the wrong items for coupons they had (necessitating them going back to the aisles to get the right items).

The customer in front of me, who was buying a gallon of milk and a box of cereal got increasingly disgruntled over how long it was taking and started talking shit to the cashier for letting the women bring their giant order through the express line.

The cashier didn't really know what to say, so he was deflecting, and I felt bad for him. When he left to go get a bottle of alcohol from the locked liquor cases, the disgruntled customer turned to me and apologized for making a scene.

I told him it was fine, but he shouldn't be getting mad at the cashier because retail employees aren't really allowed to say anything to bad customers.

When the cashier came back, the disgruntled customer apologized to him several times, and said he knows he's just trying to do his job.

And then he started talking shit to the two women instead.

crazybutable,
@crazybutable@mastodon.social avatar

@MLE_online some of the worst shame I’ve ever felt is when I was clearly over the line for the express lane, but just barely under the line of “oh no go fuck your self” and didn’t realize I was in the express lane until just before the cashier started ringing up my items.

It was the Midwest so nobody said anything but I paid and did the walk of shame to the car

@StillIRise1963 Target said “shoplifting” was the cause of shutting down stores that were just underperforming. I am wondering if they are using the boycotts to scale back their pride merch as a way to save face for the fact that last year’s pride merch was pretty underwhelming. Like they had already decided Q3 2023 not to do this and are just saying this shit now

Ah well who the fuck knows. It would be nice if we had institutions in this country we could trust not to be weasels in any case

  1. People who drive for Uber do it because they need extra cash.

  2. People who buy a Tesla have too much cash.

But while in California last week a good number of Uber cars were Teslas.

Can someone make it make sense for me?
