My friend just told me of a genius idea: her friend & partner have a secret signal for when they have guests. If one of them makes themselves a hot drink in a specific mug, that means ‘I grow weary of company, please help guests out of the door.’

At work, challenge Three Letter Acronyms (TLA) at every opportunity.

  • They are a barrier to entry for those who don't live in your work
  • People are embarrassed to ask, so at best they are distracted Googling. Mostly they are now just not understanding
  • When used in combinations they make sentences difficult to parse. "We're targeting key SLOs as a way to maintain our SLAs as one of our OKRs for EOW".

I freaking hate them

I'm getting increasingly pissed off with online retailers pushing "discount if bought via our app". I don't want an app for buying cat food or DIY kit. I want a good website and the same discount

Day 28 of my latest GDPR request. So far we've had...

  • From the DPO - "please email support"
  • "Tell us exactly what data you want"
  • Confirm a load of details (that I know they don't already have
  • "Your download is ready" (but no link)
  • "We're waiting for you to confirm your email address"
  • A download link in an email this morning!
  • Broken encoded URL
  • Manaully fixed encoding, still doesn't work though a browser, but curl got me a zip!
  • Zip is password protected....

Geeks, any thoughts on home mesh kit?

  • I don't want anything that has a SAAS component/subscription to it
  • I've a 3 bed semi - does not need to smash through lots of walls
  • Ideally the mesh points would hve USb so I can power other things off them and reduce my plug us.

What's all this 4/5/6/7 stuff about?

@jamesholden I have ports on the router, but I can't run the cabling round the house easily. Currently I have a cable going out of the window (trapped in the closed window), over the building, and in the other side. An AP on the end of it might work though.

Q: a friend noticed that Google Photos has the correct names for the faces of her children, her cat and a friend's kids, despite to the best of all knowledge, she has never set these anywhere.

I assume that #Twillio realise that the only reason I use #Authy is because it'll sync across my mobile and laptop.
By ditching the desktop app they make themselves irrelevent.
Also, with a product roadmap like "fuck it, give them a month", I'll also never use a Twillio product again. What a complete dick move

UK folks, as the weather gets colder considering throwing a tenner to Shelter or Crisis each month. They do good stuff.
No matter how secure you thing you are the stats say you're probably about 3 months from being #homeless if shit goes down.
They're solid #charity and your contributions are tax dedicated!

Who the fuck targets a public hospital with a ransomware attack?

Firstly, as the British Library demonstrated, public institutions are NEVER going to pay.

Secondly, holy FUCK those people! In addition to having no prospects of ever getting a pay out, I hope we throw the full weight of our intelligence services behind ruining the rest of their worthless lives.

    @jpmens I love it when this happens. I wrote a tiny post about getting histogram data out of mysql years ago and it occasionally pings with a comment saying thanks
