I think my favorite program in the entire linux/unix toolchain is "file". Did you even know about this program? It's on every system including MacOS and it's magic. You run it on any file and it just tells you what it is. Any file. I don't know who keeps this updated but it supports surprising things. Like it knows Windows file formats. If it's a executable it tells you if it's 32- or 64- bit. If it's an image it tells you the size and channels. If the file extension lies it just figures it out.

@mcc +1

I love file and how magical it seems.

@danielpunkass Maybe it's that I'm a Cleveland Sports fan - but I've been so sure of the "this time we have him" so many times and still he wriggled away.

@dimsumthinking @danielpunkass Don't over-celebrate hearing the check's in the mail. Celebrate when the money shows up on your bank balance. I still feel like the guy is going to die quietly in his sleep, never having paid any real price for the harm he's done.

cocoadog,
@cocoadog@mastodon.social avatar

@danielpunkass @dimsumthinking I don't have a link in front of me, but someone posted well-phrased advice about celebrating the wins when we can, because otherwise we'll wreck ourselves. I try to do that but be extra careful to remember how easy it is to get ahead of ourselves. The John Oliver "we got him" meme captures this perfectly.

The latest thing I flat out don't understand about Obsidian: if you're editing, and you do a Find Next, why would you highlight the found string but not select it for editing? Baffling and maddening. Haven't found a plugin that fixes this.

cocoadog,
@cocoadog@mastodon.social avatar

The first few times I tried Obsidian I could not believe files did not remember scroll and selection position. I assumed that was coming soon, because WTF. I'd check again a few months later, and still.

Someone out there PREFERS that files not remember their scroll position. This must be true because Obsidian does all sorts of fancy stuff; if they could do that fancy stuff, they could have done this. I am at a loss for how that decision was made.

@joshua A couple, I think. I use one because this is a dealbreaker for me. I don't understand the thought process at all.

Holy crap this was delicious. I think I have finally had my first proper Philly cheesesteak, as in "Aha, now I see why these are famous."

This was at a place called Cleavers. The sandwich pictured is shaved ribeye, sharp provolone, and peppers and onions.

Went to the Philadelphia Museum of Art yesterday. It was mostly cool but I gotta say, when you see this statue in person it doesn't look like Rocky at all.

    Curious to see how people interpret this pattern. Is the switch on or off?

    (I would have done a poll, but apparently you can't have an image and a poll in the same post.)

    cocoadog,
    @cocoadog@mastodon.social avatar

    @csilverman I don't see it as inherently suggesting on or off. If forced to use such a switch, I'd have to learn its intended meaning from context and repeated use. Its the kind of hostile design that would make me wonder what on earth the thought process was behind it -- whether anyone participating in the design had spent even two seconds thinking it through.

    Do you think extraverts can become introverts? And vice versa?

    cocoadog,
    @cocoadog@mastodon.social avatar

    @Kierkegaanks @Alice @LoganFive I'm going to start telling people that "intr-averts" avert social interaction, and "extr-overts" have overt personalities, and with this mnemonic they'll always be able to correct people who get it wrong.

    Excited to head to my first ever ACPT (https://www.crosswordtournament.com) tomorrow! My son, who is obsessed with speedcubing competition, insists this means I "Made it to Nationals." I tell him I just paid the registration fee, but he prefers the "Made it to Nationals" spin.

    cocoadog,
    @cocoadog@mastodon.social avatar

    @danielpunkass Good luck! It's been a long time since crosswords were a habit, but maybe I should go some time just to have been there at least once. I did Lollapuzzoola once and that was fun.

    I sometimes get a kind of maddening, unsettling feeling when I read documentation that doesn't quite hit the nail on the head for me. It's very, very possible that I have reading comprehension issues, and it's not the writer's fault. Regardless, it's deeply frustrating to not get what they're getting at, especially when I finally figure out some key concept, or learn about it from some other resource, and I'm thinking WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

    cocoadog,
    @cocoadog@mastodon.social avatar

    I don't always get so pissed off when I'm slow to understand something. In the best cases, even when it takes some work to get there, it's deeply satisfying to have an "aha" moment that unlocks everything. I feel good about myself, and I feel good about whoever wrote the instructional materials. In the worst cases, I start to suspect the author doesn't actually understand the topic, and they're faking it. I don't really believe that. It just feels that way sometimes.

    Levy Rozman vs "Terrifying Child"

    From the intro: "I played a kid who trash-talked me so viciously that I knew I had to win at all costs."

    Watch how fast this kid gets the better of Levy, then decides to let him off with a draw. The whole game took 43 seconds. I recommend watching on for Levy's analysis. It's interesting to hear his thought process, and to understand how great some of the kid's moves were, plus I laughed a few times.

    iPhone: Hey, this download is taking longer than expected.

    Me: Yeah, we're outside. You can switch from Wi-Fi to cellular.

    iPhone: But I'm still ON the Wi-Fi.

    Me: I know, but you have 5G. We're in the car n—

    iPhone: BUT I can still FEEL the Wi-Fi. It's RIGHT THERE!

    Me: Seriously, we're halfway down the the block. Switch to 5G.

    iPhone: Hold on, I think I've almost got a packet...

    Me: WE'RE HALF A MILE AWAY. Let the Wi-Fi go!

    iPhone: But I still can remember it... 😢

    Me: 🤦‍♂️

    cocoadog,
    @cocoadog@mastodon.social avatar

    @maxleibman This is why I turn off my phone's Wi-Fi when I go to the laundry room down the hall, forcing it to go to cellular. If I don't, the laundry payment app will spin forever trying to complete transactions like it's NASA still receiving transmissions from Voyager.

    Made Queen Bee without checking Hints for the number of words.

    cocoadog,
    @cocoadog@mastodon.social avatar

    @danielpunkass The small number was a big help. These days I only try for Queen Bee if I get to Genius in about 20 words. I gave up trying every time because I would get too invested and it would get frustrating and stop being fun.
