csilverman,

Curious to see how people interpret this pattern. Is the switch on or off?

(I would have done a poll, but apparently you can't have an image and a poll in the same post.)

@csilverman This is why we don’t make toggle switches like that anymore.

_ohcoco_,
@_ohcoco_@mastodon.social avatar

@csilverman on :o)

tjcrowdertech,

@csilverman FWIW re image and poll, the workaround I've seen people use effectively is to post the image and say the poll is in a follow up post.

csilverman,

@tjcrowdertech I considered that. The thing I've noticed a lot on here, though, is that when replies get boosted, a lot of people seem to miss the post they're replying to.

Also, I'm getting a lot of really good comments. If people just voted on a binary "on" or "off", the results wouldn't reflect things like "on, but I'm only 51% sure about that", or "off, for [reason]". That additional context is more interesting to me than just the basic state they think the control is in.

@csilverman on but please just don’t

@csilverman Who needs a boxed undead cat – when you can replace a simple checkbox with one of these.

donutage,

@csilverman My gut say On.

greystate,

@csilverman I’d see it as “on”

doodleschmit,

@csilverman I read it as "On" when I first saw the image.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@csilverman It’s on

@csilverman I'm adding to the pile of 'hate' for this UI element.

Consent forms have them, and it's unclear (perhaps deliberately) if they're all defaulted to ON and look like OFF.

I file this under 'dark patterns'.

If you made it this far: how does a screen reader interpret this control?

cocoadog,
@cocoadog@mastodon.social avatar

@csilverman I don't see it as inherently suggesting on or off. If forced to use such a switch, I'd have to learn its intended meaning from context and repeated use. Its the kind of hostile design that would make me wonder what on earth the thought process was behind it -- whether anyone participating in the design had spent even two seconds thinking it through.

fbartho,
@fbartho@mastodon.social avatar

@csilverman it’s on.

arroz,
@arroz@mastodon.social avatar

@csilverman Assuming an UI in light mode, on.

@csilverman On but cursed, because almost every other switch puts the on position on the right, and you can't rely on single-language literacy to warn folks of the difference.

@csilverman It’s not possible to know.

meli_n,

@csilverman I would say OFF based on GDPR compliance attempts by a lot of international websites, I have to toggle them to see what it really is before I commit. The checkbox ones are much easier to read.

momaku,

@csilverman @apq There is no answer to this question except “Indeterminate.” Discussion of nuance here is hopeless. Any programmer or interface designer that contemplates foisting such a design onto members of the public should be severely disciplined.

kaiserkiwi,
@kaiserkiwi@corteximplant.com avatar

@csilverman I would interpret it as on. And extremely confusing.

@csilverman Now do the dark mode version.
