It's that time of year again when we get a collection of 'WWDC Wishlists'... I don't really have one of those instead I have 3 little weird wishes for WWDC.

  • The cellular data dialog could make it easier to find the app needing data,
  • the Apple Watch could show when it is fast charging,
  • and a less squelchy Optic ID sound on visionOS.

https://www.david-smith.org/blog/2024/06/04/weird-wishes/

Screenshot of a smartwatch display showing a battery charging screen. At the top right, there is a lightning bolt icon next to the time, which reads 8:58. In the center, a circular progress bar indicates the battery level at 44%, with the text "Charging to full."

dimsumthinking,
@dimsumthinking@mastodon.social avatar

@_Davidsmith The first one is one I've wanted for a long time. What makes it worse is how the apps are listed under the cellular tab - not alphabetically which would make it reasonable to scroll through - but in terms of data usage.

@_Davidsmith Ah thank you - clearly I didn't notice it!

I see a bunch of people talking about testing web sites on less-than-ideal networks. If you're developing/testing on macOS and don't want to take a trip to Antarctica to test, download, "Additional Tools for Xcode..." from the Apple developer site, which contains the Network Link Conditioner pref pane. This will allow you to simulate poor network conditions (like slow, and/or lossy). Don't get caught by surprise: test your sites!

dimsumthinking,
@dimsumthinking@mastodon.social avatar

@marczak I've long used this tool but wish it could be targeted. i.e. degrade the experience only in the iOS simulate or in Safari or in (App to be tested here). In the old days we'd often have to remind students to turn it off because they slowed everything down. Today it means I can't demo it while teaching over Zoom as everything is impacted.

Tomorrow @mikaelacaron and I record the next @swiftovercoffee episode and we want your views for our open ballot! We're celebrating Swift turning 10, so tell us: how did it impact your life? Did it get you jobs? Did it help you go indie? Did it give you lots of fun? Tell us! 👇

@RobW @twostraws @mikaelacaron @swiftovercoffee Funny - it made me feel young. It gave me new things to learn and play with. I loved Obj-C and would have been happy staying with it longer, but Swift opened up whole new worlds for me.

A nation releases its collective breath. Trump guilty on all counts. It's a start. The devastatingly misguided people who continue to support him will now have more to be ashamed about, when and if they ever wake up.

dimsumthinking,
@dimsumthinking@mastodon.social avatar

@danielpunkass I'll take that bet. I think they will dig their heels in more and say that the system is corrupt. The Senate should have done their job (twice) but were afraid of the crowds

I spend a lot of time reassuring my aging self that I’m still hip and cool. Then today, upon encountering some sort of music festival, I asked the security guard, “what’s that hootenanny over yonder?” One might conclude that not only am I no longer hip and cool, I was NEVER hip and cool.

The WWDC labs ask that you have specific questions, and details about troubleshooting steps you've taken

I would love it if the labs were the week after WWDC or the week after that so we'd have time with the new APIs before the labs where we ask questions about them.

    @schwa I've seen this in a non-Metal app (i.e. the pickers) when I used _printChanges() and the pickers were recreated even though they didn't (seem) to need to be.

    @schwa I've (so far) been enjoying my time with Metal in SwiftUI. Deciding whether or not to dive in.

    Went to the Apple Store last night, got to spend some quality time with the M4 iPad Pro.

    • The screen is ridiculous. Delicious. Bright. A pleasure to interact with.

    • It's SO THIN!!! And light!

    • Add in the Magic Keyboard and it becomes SO HEAVY. Like a ship anchor.

    • The Apple Pencil Pro is next level. The shadow detail (shadow shows the pen tip in use, VERY precise) makes you want one.

    If it wasn't so 💰 would have walked out with it.

    #Apple #iPad

    dimsumthinking,
    @dimsumthinking@mastodon.social avatar

    @davemark I'm still considering it. No keyboard for me - it changes the device completely. And less memory than I originally thought I'd buy - with a folio, pencil, and Apple Care - still a lot - but maybe not too much

    A Swift concurrency pattern I’m seeing more and more is the “stateless actor”. This is fascinating, because it seems so counterintuitive. But I think people are reaching for this to get convenient access to background processing.

    I don’t think this is “wrong”. But I think it is probably building bad habits. Local, private nonisolated methods are usually simpler and better long-term.

    dimsumthinking,
    @dimsumthinking@mastodon.social avatar

    @mattiem what does it get you that calling an async free function or an async static method in an enum on a background thread

    I stopped by an Apple Store today to try the new iPad Pros. The screen is beautiful and the device felt incredibly light in my hands - until...

    Until I tried one with the keyboard. Then the machine felt too heavy for me.

    I don't currently use my keyboard that often and think if I get the 11" pro I would get the folio case, no keyboard, and I'd stick with the pencil I have.

    My current is a 2018 11" iPad Pro

    @SergKoren Ah interesting - I think I have the 2nd get and not the USB - thank you

    dimsumthinking,
    @dimsumthinking@mastodon.social avatar

    @SergKoren I'm not knocking the product but with the keyboard it felt like a Mac bulk and weight - without it felt magically light

    If you, like me, really disliked the glow / blooming on the M1/M2 iPad Pro display, you’ll be pleased to know it’s gone in the M4 🙌 I’m not sure how much it will be visible, but here’s a side by side comparison of new and old.

    First words holding the M4 iPad Pro: “holy **** that’s thin.”

    Second words, half a minute later: “that’s just absurdly thin.”

    Third words, another half a minute later: “the new Magic Keyboard is so much nicer!” Thinner, lighter, better materials 🤩

    This is a big upgrade 👍
