When did you first realize the power of the internet?

For me it was very early. My dad set up a 14.4 modem and a CompuServe connection and we watched as slowly, line by line, images of the planets from Voyager appeared on the screen. Even at a young age, I felt a connection to the larger world had been formed. Endless knowledge was now at my fingertips.

I miss that feeling.

cmdrmoto,
@cmdrmoto@hachyderm.io avatar

@mttaggart Pine and nn, man. Amber screen VT100 and alt.barney.purple.dinosaur.die.die.die.

Innocent young Moto’s first exposure to concepts such as “Black Rock Desert” and “Drive-by Shooting Range” and what happens when you pour liquid O2 on a barbecue grill.

Eventually these ideas would lead me out of the South, to seek my fortune out West.

Heady days indeed.

The “clear” utility queries your $TERM environment variable to decide which control sequence to print.

In other words, this is neat, but not necessarily portable across terminal protocols

Wow. I was printing a batch of these wire shelf hooks using my current favorite (cheap!) -CF from . I’d been going through the current spool faster than planned, and it ran out partway through.

Normally, I run all my new spools through the food dehydrator. This time I was in a hurry and just unwrapped the manufacturer’s packaging, dropped in the new spool, and walked away.

Dry your , folks. It can absolutely be this soggy even if it’s still factory-“fresh”

cmdrmoto,

Hmmm. Next new spool, I’m gonna put it on the 0.1g resolution scale, to check pre- and post- dehydration weights.

This better not be the next innovation in #shrinkflation

Mark Rober's most recent video is about creative drone defense tactics, and one of them is basically Deadly Bot Bukkake:

(link goes straight to the clip, bypasses Mark’s vamping)

Literally, they spray it with artificial jizz, as a way to give it such a shock (drone orgasm?) that it falls out of the sky.

(I mean. As long as you’re gonna go all out sucking the DoD’s …)

@LALegault War uses oil. Exact figures are “national security” data, so the best we can do is estimate - and no matter how you slice it, 20+ years of war … greenhouse gases more than doubling over the past 30 years …

The US and the Middle East are pretty bigly capitalized in oil. It’s not hard to imagine profit motives for more than just weapons manufacturers …

@xek *Note: Serial entrepreneurship is not for everyone. If you don’t want to make new friends then mercilessly exploit them, entrepreneurship may not be right for you.

Of course, if four startup gigs’ worth of earnings haven’t left you with a well-protected nest egg, you sure look like a sucker. :blobfoxpatsad:

@annaleen @dangillmor @technologyreview I’d say all that “brainwashing research” was pretty effective.

To summarize: they figured out that you can’t just force a specific individual to adopt a belief of your choosing.

But if you control enough media outlets, you can create enough chaos that stochastic terrorism becomes virtually inevitable. (1/2)

Very much the opposite of Daddy Vladdie.

Is a board like this safe to solder directly to a perma-proto board with no pins? I am guessing the bottom is sufficiently insulated that the pads underneath it on the perma-proto board shouldn't cause an issue.

(This is the board to charge a pair of supercaps from a <=5V solar panel.)

cmdrmoto,
@cmdrmoto@hachyderm.io avatar

@freakazoid Pretty sure that’s the intended installation method, soldering straight to the substrate board. Though usually the sub-board would be a custom PCB, presumably with no exposed traces under the footprint.

If you don’t completely trust the solder mask? I argue kapton tape is acceptable in prototypes for these kind of belt-and-suspenders insulation applications.
