Everyone should immediately stop contributing to the stack overflow and its network. The human touch is what made it unique. Delete your profile from SO AND all your answers. Freeloaders are making money out of human contributions.

I wonder how OpenAI will deal with the attribution requirement.

Unpopular opinion: “Potential reuse” (and with it to a lesser extend “avoiding tech debt”) is such a scourge on programming.

It rarely actually happens, because by the time you could maybe actually at least partially reuse something some other new shiny framework is in use so you end up writing it from scratch anyway.

citizen428,

@thomasfuchs I'd think this is a pretty popular opinion with anyone who has written non-trivial amounts of code.

This made me chuckle:

“Joel [ Spolsky] was one of the first influencers of the burgeoning field of software engineering. Think Kelsey Hightower, but with more controversial views. Or Steve Yegge, but with less controversial views.”

As a follow-up to yesterday's rant about the sorry state of our industry, I present exhibit 42 (image included in case you don't want to give Substack any traffic):

Since last night I'm giving browser a try. So far great experience, uses much less memory than FF, integrated RSS reader, vertial tabs by default and side panels are a real plus.

Is it still true that Vivaldi is owned by their employees?

hankg, to StarTrek

This is my first time playing a Star Trek themed game, thanks to the power of Proton it runs wonderfully on Linux despite being Windows only. I'm only 30 minutes in but enjoying it so far, especially since I've been rewatching DS9 again recently. It's free so far but something tells me I'm going to be up against in-game purchase limits sooner rather than later. TBD... #StarTrek #StarTrekOnline #gaming #GamingOnLinux #Steam #proton

citizen428,

@hankg Random idea: how about a fleet (https://sto.fandom.com/wiki/Fleet) of Fediverse trekkies?

I kinda regret not finding this before my starting my recent rewatch.

How recursion got into programming: a tale of intrigue, betrayal, and advanced programming-language semantics

No matter how you feel about explicit self in #Python methods, nobody can seriously believe that this is a good error message in a language often described as beginner friendly, even it it makes sense when you know why it's happening.

Everything in this screenshot except for README.md, config.py, and main.py is some sort of config or build file. We are not making things easy on ourselves as software developers.

citizen428,

@flameeyes In fact, there probably won't be an editor config, because we force a ruff format in the pre-commit hook and I don't care what people do locally.

citizen428,

S03E18, Allegiance: Skippable, but overall a pretty entertaining episode with some funny Picard moments.

#StarTrek #StarTrekTNG

citizen428,

S03E23, Sarek: Spock's dad comes onboard the Enterprise for a diplomatic mission. First mention of Bendii Syndrome and some good acting. Solid episode.

#StarTrek #StarTrekTNG

citizen428,

S03E26/S04E01, The Best of Both Worlds part 1 & 2: The best cliffhanger in Trek. A two episode story featuring everyone's favorite baddies, the Borg, going on an unusual recruitment drive to hire a spokesman.

#StarTrek #StarTrekTNG

citizen428,

S04E02, Family: Picard goes to his hometown in France to recover from his Borg experience, Worf gets embarrassed by his human adoptive parents, and Wesley meets his dead father. Slightly cheesy episode, but some nice character background.

#StarTrek #StarTrekTNG

citizen428,

S04E03, Brothers: The story of Data and Lore continues. A lot of Brent Spiner in this episode, which is great.

#StarTrek #StarTrekTNG

citizen428,

S04E07, Reunion: A great Worf episode, continuing the Klingon story arc started in S03E17.

#StarTrek #StarTrekTNG

citizen428,

S04E11, Data's Day: A charming Data episode including the pursuit of an untamed ornithoid without cause and the wedding of Chief O'Brien and Keiko.

#StarTrek #StarTrekTNG

citizen428,

S04E12, The Wounded: The uneasy peace between the Federation and the Cardassians gets put to the test. Important episode setting up some of the story for DS9, with Chief O'Brien as a main character.

#StarTrek #StarTrekTNG

citizen428,

S04E21, The Drumhead: One of my favorite season 4 episodes, featuring a great Picard speech.

#StarTrek #StarTrekTNG

citizen428,

S04E26 & S05E01, Redemption Part 1 & 2: More Klingon drama, completing the story arc that started in S04E07, Reunion. Not as iconic a cliffhanger as The Best of Both Worlds, but two solid episodes.

#StarTrek #StarTrekTNG

citizen428,

S05E02, Darmok: A fan favorite. And that’s no surprise, you can’t really imagine many other shows doing an episode like this.

#StarTrek #StarTrekTNG

citizen428,

S05E03, Ensign Ro: I really like this episode, Ro Laren is an interesting character and we'll see her again in several more episodes.
