RT @mahoneyw Notably, Hochul rose to political prominence because of how well she managed a campaign against tolls for people commuting into a city

"The citizens of Buffalo and its first- and second-ring suburbs should not be penalized every time they leave their boundaries by paying tolls to drive to work, go to the mall, visit downtown attractions or take the kids to play hockey," she wrote in a 1998 op-ed

RT @marcelemoran You cannot design a more obviously progressive policy than charging a small minority of (largely high income) drivers to benefit a vast majority of (largely low + middle income) transit riders.

"A fourth person familiar with the matter said Hochul is responding to worries raised by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader who is fiercely trying to win back a Democratic majority this year."

We've known for years that Jeffries is a car-brained idiot. The success of #CongestionPricing will help Democrats win back the house, not the other way around.

RT @aarmlovich Decommodification--ditching the price system in favor of a lottery, waitlist, or other rationing--can be done, but urban housing scarcity is a physical fact

It is possible to turn high prices into 20-year waitlists, for example, but it will not fit 100 families into 90 homes

In Paris, the transit authority reconfigured its train shops and built apartments on the land freed up. It's now renting them out to its bus drivers, a 936 square foot apartment with a balcony for about $900 a month.

In New York the MTA provides parking for employees who drive in from the suburbs.

Anniversary blog post from May 21, 2008, when the US government spent $100 million a year on "Essential Air Service," subsidizing flights to tiny airports in the middle of nowhere. It's now almost $400 million a year.

In New York State the airports served now are Watertown, Massena and Saranac Lake. We could probably save a lot of money by restoring passenger service on the train lines that used to serve those towns!
