Remarkable how out-of-the-mainstream utilitarian cycling seems to be in my neighborhood. Strong car-centric culture in Southern California, for sure. (yes, I was, until recently, part of that). 🤔

    so who can i contact (not a cop) about the puppy next door being left outside seemingly overnight and barking its head off? poor thing (german shepherd by the looks of it) is probably cold and bored to tears.

    neighbors had a dog before that did the same thing.

    @ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs i'm also not entirely sure if they speak english, so language barrier could be an issue. there's sort of a rotating cast of people living in the house, as far as i can tell.

    I love dogs. Our lazy old pug always get bullied by the cats, who have no respect for him at all. He is a big coward and completely harmless and they'll try to swipe at him, steal his food, stand on him while he sleeps etc, and he does nothing but look uncomfortable and annoyed.

    But when the cats tries to bully the new puppy, he will charge at them like loaf shaped torpedo, although he is too slow to catch them he still manages to scare them off. He is brave for ✨her✨

    I repeat this anecdote a lot so forgive me if you've heard it, but ...

    ... my Ukrainian-Canadian grandfather ran his dairy farm using a 1960s-era truck ...

    which was by today's standards tiny: Lower-slung, small cab

    But!

    It was more usable than today's monstrosities

    It had a longer bed than today's trucks; being lower-slung made loading/unloading easier

    Again: He ran a whole-ass farm with this vehicle; drove over rough terrain

    Few people need today's bloated, paramilitary trucks

    @thomasfuchs @clive i’ve always really wished we had the light little trailers like they do in europe so i didn’t need a big truck to haul mine. that said, the truck only leaves the driveway if we’re towing or hauling something in the bed.

    if you're an infrequent command line user -- what text editor do you use if you need to occasionally edit a file on the command line (other than vim/emacs)?

    curious about what people use to edit a git commit message etc

    @ssamulczyk different (pedal) strokes for different folks! i’ve been cycling for a good 15 years now. only fallen twice: hit by a car & following too close behind somebody on a gravel downhill while fully loaded. i don’t think clipping in would have helped either of those, haha.
