#HarveyMuddCollege students in Claremont, CA, didn't camp out or demand financial divestment. Instead, they demanded that the college reformulate the whole Cold War foundation of its STEM-based curriculum, which incorporates project contracts with defense & war/genocide/police-supporting tech companies. The school year is over but the campaign is not.

Serious question: when and in which contexts did calling people "individuals" emerge as a common practice, as a synonym for people? Or "an individual" for "a person"?

I ask because I'm noticing it in student writing, and I associate it with police-speak. I don't know if it's in some corners of social science or medicine too

??

athena,
@athena@union.place avatar

@inquiline I hate to admit this, but I've actually noticed myself saying it in work contexts because there are a lot of convos where I need to distinguish between people as individuals and groups of people where the group itself is the subject, not the individuals that make up the group.. so I would guess the use of "individual" might be common across any semi-disciplinary social fields that deal with people as both demographics and individuals? :///

#California residents: The legislation that will enable striking workers to receive unemployment benefits is going to get voted on by the Assembly sometime soon, so now would be a great time to call/email your Assembly rep to support it.

"Azerbaijan invited separatists from the French territories of Martinique, French Guiana, New Caledonia and French Polynesia to Baku, the Azerbaijani capital, for a conference in July 2023.

The meeting led to the creation of the “Baku Initiative Group”, whose stated aim is to support “French liberation and anti-colonialist movements”.

The group published a statement this week condemning the French parliament’s proposed change to New Caledonia’s constitution"

    I had a really good experience at #Petrocultures overall, despite heaviness of context (USC). I'm really excited that I met a tradeswoman elder/labor studies scholar & filmmaker who has been doing a ton of stuff on climate justice in the building trades. Also a bunch of other cool people + new ideas to think through. Shout-out to @inquiline for all her work co-organizing the conference with so much care and attention to accessibility & political circumstances. (My first fedi in-person meetup!)

    Yesterday I was waiting for the bus in LA after transferring from 2 trains, and I thought, "wow, it's really good to be in the city. There's so much random beauty and vibes and I can truly be part of humanity up close in all its forms." A couple of minutes passed. Another person came up to the stop, turned to look at me, and started yelling, "YOU CAN TAKE OFF THAT MASK, YOU KNOW! COVID IS OVER! THAT SHIT'S DONE! TAKE OFF THAT MASK!"

    Found out today that with California's budget cuts, all the $$ that was allocated last year to create and build up labor centers at the 6 U of California campuses that didn't have them is in danger of getting cut. This would be a tragedy, since all of these new centers channel UC funds to regional labor movements, fund labor studies classes, enable undergrads to get paid experience organizing in their home communities, support strategic research for regional campaigns, etc.

    Obvs, higher ed administrators have stopped even pretending to care about the safety of student protestors.

    #PomonaCollege cut the lights at and around their students' encampment site even though 2 days before, a true outside agitator came by the camp to record video and shout, "Long live Israel! We'll be back to wake you up at 3 in the morning, little jihads!" (I eyewitnessed this)

    @inquiline In a low-key symbolic move, Pomona has relocated its commencement to ... USC (actually the Shrine, but still an interesting choice)
