Is it normal for Google / Chromium to assign a bug report to the reporter?

Someone with a google-dot-com email address assigned it to me but I have no idea what that means.

Like, do I work for Google now? Is that how it happens?

https://issues.chromium.org/issues/342172183

artlung,
@artlung@xoxo.zone avatar

@aardrian Process-wise such an assignment in J. Random Issue Tracking Software would typically be combined with a request for something. Reproduction (which you did) or clarification (same) or some other thing that prevents anyone else from taking it. Or, given the complexity of J. Random Issue Tracking Software, maybe it was an accident.

artlung,
@artlung@xoxo.zone avatar

@aardrian Kool-Aid notwithstanding, I have not encountered any bug tracking software anyone truly thought worked well and I am old and have worked with, I think, all of them.

I have no recollection why I made this a couple years ago, but stumbling across it just now brought me joy. I mean, not the kind of joy others might feel, because I am kind of fucked up.

@fraying Don't think I ever shared - but the Tincture for Dogs and Cats is a go-to for my girlfriend's dog. We think it has positive anti-anxiety effects.

"The Verge and 404 Media are building out new functions that would allow them to distribute posts on their sites and on federated platforms – like Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky – at the same time. Replies to those posts on those platforms become comments on their sites."

If you're not looking at @theverge and @404mediaco as social web platforms that are hosting hand-picked content creators with a publisher's infrastructure, you're not paying attention.

@quillmatiq @theverge @404mediaco It's slightly eerie to read this on the same day I read @ricmac referencing when his site ReadWriteWeb integrated social comments (twitter primarily) into his site (Internet Archive Link, 2008: https://web.archive.org/web/20080704160608/http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/readwriteweb_integrates_friendfeed_comments.php ) ... I wonder what lessons, if any, could be gleaned.

During physics tests we were allowed to have a single double-sided 3x5 card.

I used my Amiga and a Micron Pigma pen to get maximum information density.

Messed around and made myself a plugin to help me make it easy for me to create 600x600 featured thumbnails for categories and tags. https://github.com/artlung/aggregate-thumbnail-images/ - very satisfying to scratch this itch.

Always good to use the CDN like a CDN rather than use it in a way that seems clever and doesn't really work.

Tech industry until 2018: web scraping is bad.

Tech industry 2019 on: we can’t survive without scraping everything.

artlung,
@artlung@xoxo.zone avatar

@cory Yes, and... I wish my memory were better - I could pinpoint when web scraping became bad... for a long beautiful time mashups were really exciting (mash a mapping service to a photo sharing service plus a tag and you see something new) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mashup_(web_application_hybrid)

artlung,
@artlung@xoxo.zone avatar

@cory And every killed, abandoned, or deprecated, throttled API kills a mashup.

I’m tthinking the guy next to me on the plane does not approve of my mask since as soon as the wifi became available he loaded The Drudge Report on his phone and looked for stories about masks (the NC law being the first hit).

artlung,
@artlung@xoxo.zone avatar

@aardrian I'm never not going to mask on a plane for the rest of my life no matter what pandemics are running or not running. Kudos to that guy if he manages to keep his mouth shut and let you do you. Good manners remains live and let live and don't be an asshole.

“As tech gets more complex, things seem to get more intuitive locally, but overall the arbitrariness keeps going up. The number of YouTube videos explaining arbitrary shit keeps going up.” https://www.ribbonfarm.com/2024/05/14/arbitrariness-costs/

artlung,

@KevinMarks Good post. Our collective "sufficiently advanced technology" being "indistinguishable from magic" has a corollary in the fact that one sometimes needs to learn magic spells to do anything. Not so bad, but we also tell ourselves stories about why we must do the spells which may or may not represent reality. I struggle to think of a better metaphor than "cargo-cults" but that's what a lot of stories we tell each other sound like to me.

There’s something so incredibly broken with Google calendar when you track all your flights and travel appointments that take place in other timezones.

It auto-adjusts time stamps to your current timezone that you view your calendar in, so you see things like a flight at 4am or a hotel check in at noon, which you know are fundamentally wrong.

artlung,
@artlung@xoxo.zone avatar

@mathowie Is that because you want to remember that your 6:41pm flight starts with the 6 and not 3:41pm in your current time zone? Have you missed a flight because you misremembered? I have been incredibly appreciative that the thing manages to show a correct "block" of time for my or others' flights, presuming it imports the local times for individual legs of a journey for a flight correctly which it has done for a long time.
