This is nuts to me. I’d never have predicted this outcome if asked on any day of the past twenty years.

Some folks have been consistently rewarded for decades for doing things that, a) impress and please their peers, but b) simultaneously hold them back from the levels at which they could impress and please their peers even more.

They are basically caught in a classic hill-climbing problem. To get to the higher hill, which they are not even sure is higher, they will have to go down into the valley, and they can't see their way clear to trying that.

Self-awareness is a superpower.

Lots of discussion about how Google has become garbage at pulling up helpful information... how are the alternatives doing? Does anyone actually use another search engine and like it? What do you like about it?

armurray,
@armurray@mastodon.social avatar

@justinesherry I’m using DuckDuckGo (for longer than I can remember) and the brave browser has started running AI on my queries (without my… prompting)… this has been a mostly positive experience. sometimes it’s not just wrong/hallucinating, it’s subtly, devilishly wrong, requiring deep insight to unpack… the kind of wrong that requires expertise, which is in direct conflict with the curiosity mode with which I search

My view is, we must accept, now is the worst time for interfaces in history

one of the weird things about walking and taking public transit for the past two years is that I now HATE cars

HATE them

not just having them, but being in one. you want me to get in a car? to go to a place? instead of a bus/streetcar/train? what if I just didn't

@lzg just watched it (and heard it was taking some flack but haven’t seen what anyone is saying). Here is my take: most of the things getting crushed are things I love, piano, arcade machine, books, guitar, turntable… stuff I want in my home and life. Goals

    @kf we were chatting the other day and Parker Posey came up (you’ve got mail), and well, you have a somewhat chaotic stance with work (not dissimilar to Posey’s character) and I thought you might like it… it has a certain distrusting vibe you might enjoy

    Is there an explainer for what is actually the point of all the AI stuff? For crypto I was fine ignoring it as it was stupid on its face. I would ignore AI too if it were just hyped by tech companies and VCs, but it seems to dominate everywhere. I’m in a “CTO club” and it’s nonstop AI.

    Internet search on this topic is, even via Kagi, tons of SEO nonsense.

    Don’t tell me about it writing emails or code. I understand that part. What actual problems is it supposed to solve?

    Lambda School /BloomTech is old news; always talked about like it was run by Satan himself by all of us who worked on actual education and learning access issues in tech.

    But what's not old news and will always emerge again is that probably now people will just be more biased against e.g. bootcamp learners who are trying their damndest to claw into a better life, rather than taking it out on the men who find toying with education a way to make their own terrible imperium

    I've heard many times that "billionaires should not exist."

    I've never heard of a viable idea to actually make this actionable policy. Every country I'm aware of with a wealth tax in Europe has repealed it.

    But suppose you just declare, "100% tax above $100M USD on wealth" anyhow.

    The ultra wealthy people can just leave and go elsewhere. If they can't just leave, it implies the freedom in their country is a sham like Russia or China.

    Anyone willing to thoughtfully weigh in?

    armurray,
    @armurray@mastodon.social avatar

    @raiderrobert progressive flat tax for all, ultra simple tax code, shared by many nations. The rumour that billionaires will leave is supported by complex tax codes that promote havens and loopholes - the key thing to change is to make manufacturing and the use of physical resources and local staff to mean that corporate taxes are paid in the country of origin. Of course, impossible to achieve, because of the golden rule.
