Has anyone wrote about how sociological and philosophical writing has changed over the last few centuries from being what the author really meant, really felt, to being what the writer believed people wanted to hear? (Yes, I know there is some Discourse Theory hidden in there somewhere.)

@sociology @philosophy @academicchatter

andy,

@richard is that supposed to have happened before or after this publication?

Has anyone ever had a banana that wasn't made by Chiquita? 🤔🍌

andy,

Yes, almost all bananas I'm eating come from my yard.

On the rare occasion they come from a plant at someone else's home.

Speaking of tofu, Pailin from Hot Thai Kitchen has a banger tofu episode in which she lets loose several tofu rants I agree with:

  • in most of Asia, tofu isn’t a meat alternative
  • tofu is often cooked with non veg items
  • people who try to ‘make it like chicken / steak’ have no idea what they’re doing
  • if you think tofu is horrible, I’m sorry you’ve not had great tofu and tofu dishes

andy,

Funny the "accidentally" frozen tofu intro to tell the viewer about this common practice.

andy,

I see. So it really originated in East Asian cooking. @skinnylatte

I need some help with a transfer. My living situation is up in the air so i need to transfer my environment to a remote setup until it solidifies, I'm trying to migrate the storage to S3 but I keep running into an issue.

When I use console storage move, it works for a bit, moves around 253 items... then starts giving an error message like [Error] Cannot put data for reference 31d56e0ccb8e2a30d6cd79ab2e85c974ed99e87a3339957efbda9a58cbe423bc, the hash changes each time and it just immediately gives me that error no longer moving anything else.

I'm still on 2023.12, I was intending to make the upgrade along with the move due to the involved downtime. I really need to get this transferred right away because I need to have the server on my desk shut down in the next day or two... can y'all help be figure out how to get past this error message and get the storage transferred up?

andy,

How about moving the storage items back into the database, via the console command?

I did that once and it took quite some time though. Afterwards you can upload the DB and configuration file to a new VPS installation.

It's likly not to be quick, but probably the least experimental.
@shiri

andy,

The idea would be that once everything is back into the DB you could move it to S3 storage.

Just to check are you trying to migrate from local storage to S3?
@shiri

andy,

Oh, that sounds tricky.

I wish I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that the various storage systems are not yet very well developed.

It you can get some temporary drive linked up for your DB dump that has the pictures moved back, you might be in a better position for S3.

Hopefully someone else might have some better recommendations.
@shiri

andy,

Perfect! Nice to hear.

Russian state media continue to push the explanation that the arrested terrorists did it for money. Apparently, the salary for becoming a mass murderer was USD 5400.
They don't mention ISIS with a single word.

On a sidenote, it has always puzzled me that Russians in uniform so often wear masks on TV even in situations where it makes no operational sense. Are they not proud to be associated with their service?

andy,

@anderspuck

it makes no operational sense

I think you're transposing your own context ---a system mainly built on merit, law based-processes, and a high degree of permanence--- onto a rather different situation.

These officers revealing their identity wouldn't be desirable: it may interfere with any other businesses they may be involved in; it could question their credibility, as they may have been pushed up or down the system at will; they might be confronted by a previously accused who (they were ordered to roughen up, but as the tables turned) managed to wiggle out of the justice process by whatever means of corruption.

Transparency and showing a human face is not likely an important part of a system that is supposed to instil fear and terrorise people.

Dancing, making jokes or satire publicly, is illegal next week Friday in Germany.

This is not a joke. Whenever I talk about this publicly people think it's a joke. This concept is so foreign to some people.

My favorite TV shows can't air because it's illegal to make jokes that day.

What kinda Footlose sh*t is this??

andy,

but why?

I guess there's a public holiday, somber and religious in nature called, Good Friday.

I read there's also another public holiday in Germany that has similar restrictions; I think it's in October or November, something about mourning the dead.

How much modern Germany is a religious country I have no idea. But one thing for sure, the very strict separation between church and state that exists in France, is not happening there.

I think this film mainly ridicules organised religion.

A couple months ago I abruptly stopped my LEGO activity that was eating at me because I felt that I had to clear my living room of all the set bags I was storing in while awaiting for parts or building. With no end in sight, I ended up burning out until my partner suggested that we could put them away in a closet until I was ready to resume in a better mood.

Ever since, I've had trouble finishing tasks that I wanted to start in the first place:

  • Unlocking a different ending in Cyberpunk 2077 with a new character.
  • Writing a review of Cyberpunk 2077 on my blog.
  • Implementing a moderation system in Friendica.
  • Designing a board game inspired by the video game Northgard.
  • Restoring a few big 1980-90s pirate/castle/space LEGO sets that were donated to me by fellow parents in my kid's class.

At the same time, I'm longing to find something else to do that will keep me engaged, locking me in a mixed apathy-restlessness feeling there probably is a German word for.

I don't know what to do to get out of this rut, I feel like it's been long enough that it would have passed on its own if it was just temporary.

andy,

It doesn't sound easy @hypolite

I recently heard about this Dutch word and concept of niksen, which basically means doing nothing.

I first thought it was a little bit strange. But then I learnt it really means letting go of the burdening ambivalence that we could doing something thereby preventing us of not enjoying the deliberate act of not doing anything.

I personally found this quite a revelation that somehow allowed me to be more focused.

This is Joseph. I finally got my new friendica node up and running. Not for the faint of hear

It is running, as you can see my message.

While I know that I have a few things to set up, I was reading over the doc's and it talked about adding a relay. This way, get more traffic and will see posts outside of my ultra tiny circle of contacts(myself at the moment, and friendica admin and support forums!)

They say go to the command line and enter the add relay command with the relay domain question:
bin/console relay add relay.example.com/actor

But, the command line spits out the error:
-bash: bin/console: No such file or directory

What might I have missed during my install so that the bin/conssole command is not availabe?

How can I fix it?

Thanks for any help!

Sounds like you're not in the correct directory. You should be in the root of your installation. E.g. /var/www/friendica

Hello

I have been running #2024.03-rc for several days now. When I moved from stable to RC, the database and the update versions were correct once everything was done.

Today, I forwarded the RC by running git fetch & git pull and now I got the following mismatch:

The database version is 1553/1554, the post update version is 1550/1550.

Running bin/console dbstructure update -f doesn't seem to make a difference.

What's going on here? The database version doesn't normally change once the RC is branched off. How to correct it?

andy,

Okay, thanks @tobias

andy,

I managed to move update it now. All sorted.

Hello. I have several Saved Folders, but i'm struggling to deduce some usage aspects.

  1. How can i edit existing folders to rename them?
  2. Due to various reclassifications i've made now two folders are empty, & i shan't use them again; how can i delete them pls?

Thanks.

andy,

Under "Saved Folders" I have an entry called "Everything". It's empty and seems likewise unremovable.

andy,

I see. Thanks, @alfred
