in LA I have to have discipline to only hit up a taco truck once per day max. One of the hardest parts of living here aside from the rent and proximity to rich people tbh

alicia_izquierdo,

@jonny it’s taco 🌮 Tuesday everyday? 😂

Is it common that US universities don’t pay their faculty for 3 months every year? What’s up with that 🤔
#Academia #Faculty

alicia_izquierdo,

@elduvelle at a college (non-medical school) it is common for faculty to have a 9-month salary stretched to 12 months. They can cover their summer salary through grants, by teaching, or running a program #academia #faculty

“We studied 534 deep brain stimulation electrodes implanted to treat four different brain disorders. By analyzing which connections were modulated for optimal therapeutic response across these disorders, we segregated the frontal cortex into circuits that had become dysfunctional in each of them.” #neuroscience

Looking for recommendations on electronic 👩🏻‍🔬 lab notebooks 📓 The most desirable functions would be day-to-day timestamped documentation for individual projects, ability to import figures/images, and ability to annotate. For context, we already have a very active lab Slack and shared server/folders for data, protocols, documents etc. Looking mostly for ability to monitor day-to-day procedures and results for all projects, all in one place #neuroscience

alicia_izquierdo,

@jonny thanks!

Simultaneous, cortex-wide and cellular-resolution neuronal population dynamics reveal an unbounded scaling of dimensionality with neuron number

alicia_izquierdo,

@albertcardona the tradeoff to that push against reductionism here is to observe the “whole brain” in a head-fixed, artificial environment. So that comes at the cost of studying naturalistic, freely-moving behavior, which can also be reductionist #neuroscience

There's been an explosion of papers doing cell-type specific research in rodent neuroscience lately. Any human neuroscience researchers here who could tell us whether and how much all these studies are relevant for human brain circuits?

#neuroscience #NeuroBuzz

alicia_izquierdo,

@manisha from a comparative anatomy perspective, I think it is very important. It provides insight into mammalian brain evolution and phylogenetic differences. Would ideally like to see more across-species comparisons (which is difficult to do). #neuroscience

Weird how being nonunionized faculty gives you no power to bargain over how much "overhead" and fake tuition the university charges per grad student. Almost seems like an effective way of pitting PIs against grad workers: to the PI you're extremely expensive, but the grad worker receives almost none of that.

The amount of ppl saying this is the natural "reality" rather than a byproduct of a disempowered faculty is making my eyes roll into the back of my skull

alicia_izquierdo,

@jonny indirects at 56% and funding GSRs with a big gap between new contract and existing NIH payscale 🪄 🤷🏻‍♀️

In press! 📣 The surprising result that basolateral amygdala has a more crucial role in learning meaningful changes in the reward environment than orbitofrontal cortex. Check our paper to find out how! 🤓 https://www.jneurosci.org/content/early/2023/11/13/JNEUROSCI.0622-23.2023
