ICQ is closing down. It was really at its height in 2000 and that is when we integrated ICQ into Opera. We made a small (5k) client and it worked really well.

AOL had purchased ICQ and they were concerned about MSN taking users from them by connecting to their service, so they stopped supporting 3rd party clients. We contacted them, to see if they would make an exception for us, but they did not.

They said that if we removed our 5k client, we could maybe discuss bundling their client, but it was bigger than Opera, so that was not going to happen.

@jon I honestly didn't know ICQ still existed. I remember my ICQ number though. 37531260. I think I stopped using it when they stopped supporting third party clients. I was using Trillian at the time.

I did a survey to check how many of you have used one of my browsers, Opera or Vivaldi, with Vivaldi being my current browser company and Opera being my old one.

A lot of you shared your story and that is much appreciated.

1061 did the survey.

61% had used both Opera and Vivaldi.
15% had used Opera
12% had used Vivaldi
11% had never used either.

Thank you all for joining in. I hope those of you that are not using Vivaldi, will give it a try.

I have been building browsers for 30 years now. First Opera and now Vivaldi. My estimate is that more than 1 billion have used one of my browsers or both. Have you?

@jon @Vivaldi The browser is my main daily driver, although I haven't set up the email client part (yet anyway) since I have a "lifetime" license to eM Client. Bought the license a few years back after Thunderbird started getting buggy. Trying to get my money's worth out of eM before I switch to another email program. 🙂

@Vivaldi has just released the latest "integrated" Vivaldi game onto Steam. This is a game that's historically been built into the browser, so you had to have #Vivaldi to play it. I use Vivaldi as my daily driver, and I'll tell you how awesome it is for hours if you let me, so at first I was thinking this was kinda cool, but it didn't really matter to me personally. But I have a #SteamDeck and now this is awesome for me personally. Vivaldia 2 on the SteamDeck!! Awesome!

@hanse_mina Remember, Musk inherited his initial fortune, like tRump, and hired experienced people to run his various purchases, except apparently Twitter (X). He was NEVER a "self made" genius. tRump has bankrupted everything he has managed. Maybe Musk will eventually get bankrupted by his Twitter (X) purchase.

So far, I like #Mastodon and #Bluesky better as a Twitter/X substitute than #Threads , mainly because I have yet to be "locked out" of the former for a few days. First Threads locked me out for following too many people at once, this time they "say" it's because I logged in from a strange device, which I didn't!

This is just a hunch but he's dumb enough to do it: Elon's signaling that new mute will be better than block. Guessing that it's the same as block, subscribers can use it, and everyone else is considered a visitor and can't. The functional end of Twitter.

@kbeninato Ol' Husky has been trying his best to kill the website since he bought it. From what I've read on various tech sites, the app might be eliminated from Google and Apple if that policy is implemented.
