My server, My rules, but I still follow the covenant.
This is a personal server. It's here because I'm a nerd who likes to play with new technologies.
I'm #ActuallyAutistic and #AnAlly. My personal stance is that everyone is responsible for their own choices, and what/who they want to be/sleep with/worship/etc is none of my business.
Treat me how you want to be treated.
I am a #HAM, #Musician, #Maker, #Tinkerer, #Thinker, #Stinker, #Mechanic, #Electrician, #Builder, #Carpenter, #Husband, and a retired #USMarine #USMC. #AI8W #CW #Digimodes
If most of your traffic on Mastodon is boosting others' toots, please don't follow me - I'm looking to interface, communicate, and create friendships with people, not their boosts, and I can't tell who you are if all you do is boost. Let's keep the SNR at a readable level, shall we?
I love #RetroComputing, #Kits, #ProblemSolving, #Virtualization, #3dprinting, #making, #building, #creating, #cad, #design, #music (mostly stringed instruments, but some woodwinds. Don't have the lips for brass) and basically anything #Geeky and #Nerdy. I Especially love to #HaveFunStormingTheCastle while using #TheForce during a #MindMeld.
I'm currently teaching myself #Java, because reasons.

We'll know we're appropriately decentralized when nobody cares who's running which node on the #SocialWeb (much less corporate platform).

admin,
@admin@mastodon.ai8w.ddns.net avatar

@wjmaggos

Those of us who have fully embraced decentralization by hosting our own instances are still looked down upon as the "unclean", though... It's assumed we've got our own instances because no other instance would have us.

I'm not saying it ISN'T true, but the automatic assumption is a little insulting. ;)

Of course we think the bad guys only win elections by cheating, when we aren't aware of the bad stuff the people we're told are the good guys, do. And obviously this story is even easier to sell regarding countries we know less about than our own. The level of American belief in good guys and bad guys is both adorable and so dangerous.

admin,
@admin@mastodon.ai8w.ddns.net avatar

@wjmaggos

The number of times I've heard, "45 is a <badthing1> <badthing2> and a <badthing3>, so vote Democrat!!!" out of people who don't seem to realize that all three of those <badthingS> are also true of 46 (I'm applying the same brush here..) is amazing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees it.

I have fond memories of hauling loads up and down those hills... was always fun to pull an oversize/overweight load (permitted) up those hills and pass the other trucks while doing it...
... and the Sapp Bros. trucstop in Denver was one of the best on the road restaurants back then.. It's been a minute, and I'm sure things have changed, but.. yeah.. Nice trip down memory lane, there.

Them: Says something stupid

me: gives opinion

Them: Citation needed

Me: agreed, you need to cite your claim, since you are the one making it the onus is on you.

Them: How dare you demand a citation, blocked.

To be fair, though.. the toot to which you replied was authored by a different person than the one who asked for citations... or at least a different account.

admin,
@admin@mastodon.ai8w.ddns.net avatar

@freemo I (mostly) agree with your point.. it was just the troublemaker who blocked you isn't the author of the first toot... and you're probably better off without that troublemaker anyway.

Interesting, USPS carrier (not my regular one and not at my normal residence) was not enthused about being handed a properly stamped USPS Priority Mail box, saying he "doesn't usually have room in the truck" to pick those up, and warning me to not hand him packages in the future and suggesting I go to the post ofice. I guess this guy only wants to deliver, not pick up, mail. 🤔

(my normal USPS carrier, who I know well at my house, is happy to take many packages from me. )

I've found that restricting languages to those which use the Latin charset filters the spam right out.

I took pixel.infosec.exchange offline to fix the new critical cve in pixelfed. Since pixelfed doesn't work well with docker, I am also moving to a vanilla/bare metal install, so it'll take a while to complete. My apologies.

admin,
@admin@mastodon.ai8w.ddns.net avatar

@jerry

I've found over the years that if I'm installing something that requires APT packages, Debian is usually easier than Ubuntu. They're not quite the same, and Debian seems to be able to do more server things easier than Ubuntu does.

Just my experience and opinion - your mileage may vary.

I also just checked and this seems to have monumentally damaged the use count on the server.

I dont know exactly when this was enacted but in recent months the user count for the server plummeted from 80K to 20K and has month by month been continually decreasing since then as people flock away from the server. I suspect the use of this extremely abusive block list, and perhaps similar decisions are a large part of the reason.

Universodon making bad decisions with regard to who they block/limit/ban?

SHOCKING.... not.

admin,
@admin@mastodon.ai8w.ddns.net avatar

@freemo

...not really.
I had an account on there. I asked one question which, I suppose, someone took offense to. Next thing I know, I'm suspended - cant see anyone. I questioned/appealed the decision and never heard back. 30 days later that account is toast and can't even talk to people who'd friended it in the first place.
This was late 2021 early 2022.

Then I made an account on infosec.exchange.. Jerry was very cool. Then I got the idea to spin my own instance up.. and here I am.

No, these bad decisions at universodon have been going on for at least two years.. It's only becoming APPARENT now.

And yet you're embracing an automatic "banlist" based on nothing except the say-so of people who, for the most part, shouldn't be deciding what to eat for supper on any given day, much less the suitability of a particular server (mine included...) for federation?

Or am I misreading all of the above?

@Extelec I'm aware of several reasons why that's funny (which is why I posted it), but maybe not all of them.. I'm just glad it gave a chuckle. I'm trying to give a chuckle today. After yesterday, spreading chuckles may help me deal with what I had to do yesterday.
Don't go searching if you don't wish to find a downer...

Is super crappy how a news reader from Skynews belittled the 13yrd old who beat Tetris and said stuff like "as a mother I would keep my kid away from the screen" and "he should go play outside, beating Tetris is not a life goal"

It's those "mothers" that do not understand their kid nor try to understand them but guide with the "parent handbook" because that's what's known

Setting such a world record is an amazing accomplishment, let alone at 13 years old! Support kids in what they do and like

That looks like the gameboy version? Far from the original.

But, yes, the gameboy version that's what happened.

The article is talking about something not changed by Nintendo

admin,
@admin@mastodon.ai8w.ddns.net avatar

@freemo

I believe it was written on a UNIX machine in Russia sometime in the mid 80s, and, yes, graphics like that were possible...

The article also states that the version the kid was playing was a PORT, so it's possible graphics were polished.

@stux

admin,
@admin@mastodon.ai8w.ddns.net avatar

Color graphics were available on SGI, NeXT, and SUN at that time.
