everything I've released since Jan 2023. That's a lot of music. Most of it subscriber-only. All of it made possible by the Bandcamp subscription.

I just added a new track to the latest release, cos I can and it made musical sense. :)

head to https://stevelawson.bandcamp.com/subscribe for more x

Oh , never change!

Solobasssteve,

@Edent hahahahahahaha

Solobasssteve,

@Edent I think I need to do an album called 'mention their field or a specific skill' 😂

A few people have asked me recently about in-person bass lessons, so I thought I'd better write about why I only teach on Zoom these days, and why I think it's actually better than the in-person lesson experience.

Solobasssteve,

@raichoo sure! I've not had any issues yet, but I imagine that there are going to be combinations of OS/interface/software version that clash.

Solobasssteve,

@raichoo Zoom definitely takes some wrangling to get the optimum from it. I wrote about some of it here - https://www.stevelawson.net/2023/10/how-to-get-set-up-for-bass-lessons-on-zoom/

kids, I'm doing Ride London again this year, raising money for the brilliant Bike Project, who do up bikes and give them, along with training and support, to refugees and asylum seekers. I'm WAY out of shape, having had my slowest start to the year cycling since before COVID. Here's the link to sponsor me, if you'd like to help support them and motivate me :) xxx

Day 1 on the #fretless #bass. Binged @Solobasssteve videos and got some pointers by Arran McSporran. It's a very different beast, but tons of fun! 😸#bassguitar https://www.youtube.com/shorts/OLlvH3fkFy8

Solobasssteve,

@raichoo nicely done! Arran is amazing, good choice 😊

what the fuck is it with labour centrists and Thatcher??? FFS, I don't care what rhetorical hoops you think you can leap through to make that shit mean anything other than being an apologist for starving miners and the utter decimation of public services, it is never, ever a good move for a Labour politician to try and squeeze Thatcher into a speech. The Labour heartlands that you so desperately need to win back still remember the strikes, still remember the utter contempt. Fucking idiots.

And got to see Stevie Wonder play completely acoustic 😲

Solobasssteve,

@godzero @mastobikes that's awful, I'm sad that happened and that you saw it 😟

Man, cycle infrastructure is SO fragile. Here in Birmngham there's big structural building work going on along National Cycle route 5, and the diversion that's been set up is through a field. So when it gets wet, everyone's commute turns into cyclocross training. I did it on Monday, unwisely, and ended up looking like I'd been mucking out a cowshed (managed to ride it without putting my feet down though! 😁) ...cont...

It's no exaggeration to say that finding a new home for my music if Bandcamp was to actually shut down would be at least as much of an upheaval as finding a new job. My entire creative economy rests on Bandcamp. Long term, that may prove to be unwise, but I'm closing in on £100K in gross revenue over the last 15 years, so it's been absolutely essential to my viability as a musician in that time. I certainly couldn't have made the kind of music I make in the way I make it without

There might be a slight chance my SansAmp is dying on me, mere 8 months after I bought it... I really don't need that in my life right now.

@sharan isn't it under warranty?

Went to see Nik Kershaw play on Saturday night. Absolutely incredible. Now trying to play along with a bunch of his tracks. Holy shit, he fit more key changes into a single than Ed Sherean and Taylor Swift's catalogue combined. Have a listen to Wide Boy or The Riddle or Wouldn't It Be Good... absolutely outrageous jazz fusion/prog harmony with the catchiest of pop melodies. A total one-off. ♥️

Quietly mourning all the video startups which died in the last decade.

Found this old blog post of mine - https://web.archive.org/web/20110107045546/http://shkspr.mobi/blog/index.php/2009/11/barcamp-africa-uk/

All the videos from Qik and TwitCam are just gone. I can't find any archive of them 😞

Also, I kinda miss my blog's 2009 CSS!

Solobasssteve,

@Edent I lost SO much video when Qik went down 🙁

Following developments in the sale of closely - here's Songtradr's own statement, FWIW, https://www.songtradr.com/blog/posts/songtradr-bandcamp-acquisition

and some commentary from Create Digital Music (CDM) - https://cdm.link/2023/09/bandcamp-sold-to-songtradr/

Best case scenario? Bandcamp continues as is with a bunch of backend options to opt into licensing subscription offers etc. Songtradr massively increases its catalogue, but the front end of Bandcamp continues as is.

Worst case scenario, the back end becomes the front end...

Hello community. Are small amps (>30 watts) useless ? Are headphone-oriented devices (Vox Amplug or heads/preamp like Warwick Gnome, Ashdown Ant, Orange Bass Butler, Two Notes Revolt Bass, Darkglass Ultra...) better suited for bass players who don't need an amp at home ? What do you think ?

Solobasssteve,

@Lamah if it's for home use, you may be better value for money with studio monitors and some kind of interface. That means you can record yourself too and play along with audio/video for practice. At that point, bass-specific gear doesn't necessarily provide much advantage.
